Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

The Museum of Contemporary Art at Centro Cultural Belém displays lesser-known works by renowned artists such as sculpture by Modigliani, Dali, Christo and Henry Moore, paintings by Man Ray, de Chirico and Pollock, as well as better-known works by Duchamp, Warhol, Mondrian, Liechtenstein, Torres-Garcia and Vieira da Silva. The expository format is very didactic in an air-conditioned and silent environment. The staff are kind and attentive. The gardens are very beautiful. There was no queue.

Beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces - olive grove garden at front and water garden at back are peaceful quite relaxing spaces. Great cafe inside. Museum of contemporary art inside has an amazing collection if that interests you. A lot of the collection veers to the challenging / provoking / disturbing side of modern art.

This modern building is a calm oasis away from the tourism bedlam surrounding it. There is an excellent coffee shop (a little hard to find but worth seeking out) and the art gallery is a great art space with many leading artists works on display. Picasso, Man-Ray, Mondrian, Miro, and Francis Bacon are just a few. It's well worth spending a couple of hours here.

So we were going to watch the trip to Reims. The ticket said seven and we arrived 7:10 and were not allowed in. The ticket said nothing about doors opening at a certain time and the opera starting at a certain time. We paid 40€ to no avail to miss the first half of the opera. On top of that there as no place to go and have a drink or anything as everything was closing or was serving food.
After tonight I will NEVER !! GO BACK !! to the cultural centre for anything as they are neither accurate nor welcoming.
I would not recommend anyone to go see any show for which there is not enough accurate information from which to make plans!!

We really loved the Berardo Collection. The space is just beautiful; not crowded; and has lovely staff. I worried about crowds because Lisbon is quite busy with tourists but it was airy, light, and easy to see everything: Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, many well known artists.

We went for the 5:00 pm performance by the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra (OSP - Orquestra Sinfonica Portuquesa). They presented Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" and Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 1". Even the 8 and 12 year old boys with us were impressed.

The Centro Cultural de Belem, which was built in the early 1990s, houses a Conference Centre, a Performing Arts Centre, a Exhibition Centre and numerous shops, restaurants and cafés. It's located very close to the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and just across the road from the Padrao dos Descobrimentos monument. The Exhibition Centre houses the Museu Coleção Berardo, which is a modern art collection, and the CCB is worth visiting just to see the collection.

There are shows and events that are held here. The center is located in the middle of the town of Belem, which is easily reached from Lisbon via the street car or the train. Also a short cab ride away. There are restaurants and cafes nearby plus a lot of major tourist sites.

I was here in September for a medical conference. The meeting hall was a bit small for the number of attendees, but I imagine that was not the fault of CCB.
The main meeting room has tiered stadium seating, that was a bit cramped for taller and larger individuals.
It is conveniently located close to Jeronimo's Monastery and PadrĂŁo dos Descobrimentos, and not too far from the Torre de Belem.
I did not take advantage of the other exhibits in the CCB itself.

A great modern building opened in the early 1990’s it houses, amongst many interesting spaces, the Museu Coleccau Berardo. This is a wonderful art gallery: light, spacious and very airy it makes many other major art galleries seem cramped and a bit confined in comparison. A real jewel in the crown for the art scene in Lisboa, I would make this a "must do" if you are here on a mini break. If you can spare the time, and you enjoy modern art, I would recommend having lunch in one of the many decent cafes in the complex and making a whole day of your visit.
We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon here and we only managed to check out the amazing selection of works from the collection of Jose Berardo. Thoughtfully curated the work was displayed in a number of rooms on the ground floor of the gallery which made for an interesting journey through the collection. Some of this work is just stunning and you will find something of interest from most of the important artists of the past fifty years. I was struck by the depth and range of the collection and if you are interested in film/video installations you will find this a real treat.
If you are in need of a rest, or a breath of fresh air to keep you going, take a little time out in the lovely garden as you wander round. I find that I can only take so much visual and aural stimulus at one go, so the opportunity to chill out in this great, fragrant space was very welcome.
Our afternoon soon slipped through our fingers and much to our disappointment we had no time to check out the Mappa Mundi or other interesting looking exhibitions. We made a quick stop at the well-stocked shop to pick up a trifle or two before a short walk to the tram stop and the journey back into town for another tasty supper.
This place is already on the ever growing "must revisit" list.

Planning on attending a classical music recital in the Grande Auditorio this weekend. Is there a dress code? Wanted to find out if formal attire is common at concerts like these or whether a blazer / no-tie is more appropriate.

There is an entry fee only to the Architecture exhibition, 4 EUR for adults, 2 EUR for students. The other exhibitions are free.
