Boy was this a must do activity. This museum is only open certain times and all the tours are in English but we did not book ahead thinking we’d be ok. We were but I strongly recommend making a reservation. It is located on the street behind the BCP bank. You have to really be looking for the sign or you can miss it. What is inside will amaze you. Artifacts dating back to 500BC. The bank wanted to make a parking garage but when they uncovered ancient ruins that idea was thrown out. You have to be careful walking around the ruins if you are tall but the tour guide tells you this. Tour is about an hour and very popular with the schools etc. It’s a great history lesson for young and old. Children would enjoy it too - you even get to see an old cemetery with a skeleton :)

We stumbled onto this one night eating at an outdoor cafe opposite this site. We went back the next day, spent a while finding it again in daylight, then went on a guided tour with and english speaking super knowledgable and informative guide. This was not on our radar of things to do but ended up being one of the best things we did in Lisboa. It is an archeological excavation under a bank with relics in remarkable condition, and it didn't cost a thing to join in the tour. A fantastic highly recommended thing to do.

We walked into this place (which is not that easy to find) without a reservation, and got accepted into a tour right away. They do tours in English and Portuguese. Our tour guide, Isabella, was friendly, fun, and very knowledgeable. It was facinating to learn about the history of this site! I highly recommend it!

The visit is free, and yet, Milennium bank put an amazing amount of effort into the preservation of the site and making it accessible to the public. It's not Disneyland so kids might not appreciate it unless parents do their share to instill some appreciation into a glimpse into life of 2000 years ago. The site is smack downtown so very easy to incorporate into other things to see downtown. Make sure you make reservations in time.
