We did this four hour walking tour with Joana Mateus who made Lisbon come alive to see how the locals live and eat in Lisbon.
Joana took us to places tourists would never see and food experiences only enjoyed by the local inhabitants. Expresso coffee, custard and white bean tarts, cheese with quince jam, regional port, beer on a roof top, a Ginginha (cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup) to a sea food feast where some of the gastronomic delights enjoyed on the walking tour.
Along with interesting shops like; the oldest bookstore and the smallest glove shop where just some of the interesting attractions the normal tourist would not see.
However the historic information Joana shared with the small group of nine was interesting and informative.
This is a must do active whilst in Lisbon.

We were six people from four different countries on this tour which started from the centre of Lisbon and took us all over the city. As a frequent visitor to the city i had very much looked forwards to discover some hidden gems within the city, which is exactly what we did, e.g visiting a small cafe to have coffee and pastries. Our guide, Sofia, was great and very knowledgeable. She took well care of us and you could tell the tour was well planned and researched. Our guide also seemed to be able to adapt the tour to suit the interests of the group and over all we had a lovely day and if recommending this tour to my friends or other travelers, would definitely advice them to request the same guide we had on our tour.

This was an interesting and well presented tour with a good balance of food, history and seeing Lisbon. Sofia presented clearly and gave just enough information whilst being very considerate for the group as the weather was extremely hot. As a result of this tour we were more fully able to enjoy the rest of our trip to Lisbon. Would definitely recommend to others.

Thanks Margerida for a wonderful, informative and extremely enjoyable tour, so much so that the time allotted (and much more!) passed so quickly. This is a thoroughly recommended introduction to Lisbon for those, like me, who are newcomers to this interesting city. Margerida gave well summarised background to significant sights and points of interest; details of Ginja liquor, cod fish, cheese and marmalade (magnificent) among many others. Her tips on how to avoid tourist crushes were also appreciated. Highly recommended!

Our guide Carolina did a pretty good job of keeping us entertained throughout the tour - but we could have done with a bit more food tasting. Considering the price we had better tours with other companies for half the price.

We found this tour to be unenjoyable and so no recommend it. The tour guide stopped to talk to his friends, took us to a restaurant were the food was literally gross. - this was after walking for so long and with very little "pay off" such as interesting information or food. Then, at the end, we had this horrible dinner at the top of a very steep hill. Truly it
was a bad experience. However, I give it a circle because the guide was a nice guy.

I want to start off by saying this is not a reflection of our guide, Sofia, who was sweet, wonderful, knowledgeable, and helpful. She was a great tour guide to have. However, I found the tour itself to be way too "basic." The foods we sampled, while tasty, were items that we could easily get anywhere without a tour guide - in other words, we weren't taken to anywhere that was off the beaten path, or given samples of anything that we might not otherwise have discovered. The history we were given wasn't anything you couldn't Google and find on Wikipedia - just very basic facts. Frankly, we did a free walking tour that was much more informative (though sans food). While I did have fun, and enjoy the day, I was hoping for a more authentic experience.

We had Joanna as our tour guide, and she was just fantastic!! She took us to places that were out of the way, not places that we as tourists would have found on our own. The food was great, the service excellent, the information that Joanna provided was relevant and very informative. It was a 3+ hour walking tour altogether, but at a very easy pace. Overall an excellent experience - great job Joanna!!

I usually don't expect much from these type of tours. It can be highly variable depending on the weather, the other people in the group, and most of all the guide. In this case the planets aligned, and we had a wonderful time. The group was a bunch of Americas from all walks of life, east coast, west coast, mid west, and a family of Cuban Americans from Miami. Everyone was outgoing and great fun to talk to as we walked through the city. The venue was what appeared to be a small family owned place. The food was good, the wine was free flowing, and the Fado music was incredible! The best part and the thing that made it all come together was our guide Helder Carvalhal. Helder guides part time (he is working on his PHD in History), has a great sense of humor, highly organized, and able to adapt to the group needs. Part of the group was given the wrong instructions for the meeting place, two folks have bad knees, a few jet lagged. Helder was able adapt to these issues and still insure that everyone had a great time! If you take this tour I strongly suggest that you request Helder as your guide, you'll have a great time!

This is a hard tour to review as Carolina worked hard as our guide informing us about local restaurants, Lisbon and surrounding areas and I wouldn’t want to undermine the effort she put in. It was very pleasant walking around Lisbon and I enjoyed this aspect. The problem occurs due to the fact this is also a food and drink tour and therefore there is a expectation you will feel more acknowledgable about the local food and drink by the end of the tour. For example at the first coffee stop we ate the famous custard tart but no mention about the history of this or all the other amazing pastries that Lisbon has to offer. We also had a coffee and interestingly the American and the English tourists spoke about their coffee culture but nothing was mentioned about the Portuguese and therefore I am no more informed about coffee in Portugal except they drink it. It’s always helpful to throw in some interesting facts to keep the engagement. The 2nd stop we had wine and cheese but no mention what these were and why we were having them. Are they famous in Portugal? Tell me more!!!! 3rd stop was for half a lager which came in a Heineken glass. Is this Portuguese? Why are we drinking this on this tour? What beer or lager do the Portuguese make? Was this stop at a traditional brewery? Yes I could ask the questions but I shouldn’t have to. Make it relevant to the place we’re in. Give us some info, facts, interesting stories, myths...something to make a link between the drink and the location, otherwise we’re literally having a chat and a drink with some strangers which isn’t the reason to be on the tour. The 4th stop was over the river so we had to take a ferry which felt a bit pointless as I’m sure there’s other places to visit in the Lisbon area, it’s not as if the ferry is a nice trip. However we had a glass of wine, shrimps, beans, salt cod croquette and shrimp pasty. This was pleasant enough but again no interesting information to accompany the food and drink. Carolina was lovely and was very good at recommending restaurants but there is so much more that can be done to make this more interesting and relevant to the food and drink in Portugal. Lisbon is rich in tradition with a wide range of food and drink so don’t undersell what is available. Nowadays information is so accessible via the internet and therefore why would you book a tour? It’s because the local guide will have snippets of information that only a local would have that allows you to be submerged into their world which therefore makes it worthwhile. This tour touched the surface of the food and drinks that can be sampled in Lisbon and therefore I would say do your own research and go and explore!
