Lisbon City of Spies Tour

In the 2nd World War Lisbon swarmed with spies from the main sides in conflict. A Walking tour designed to find out how neutral Portugal provided the natural setting for conspiracy.
Inside the city of Lisbon both the Allies and the Axis kept impressive diplomatic services: probably the only place in war-torn Europe where all sides were able to meet on equal grounds. Lisbon suddenly became a true “nest of spies” as mentioned in several period chronicles and the “plane to Lisbon”, as an escape route in the movie Casablanca, remains one of the best known examples.

In this walking tour you will visit some of the sites related with the spy stories of:

The most famous spy Hotels in Lisbon
The refugees and the European fashion trends
The lonely fight of the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux
The most important WWII double agent: Garbo/Arabel
The story of the real James Bond
The Jewish gold and the tungsten traffic

We had a wonderful walking tour with our guide José Antunes who took us around places we would not have discovered by ourselves. Jose is historically very knowledgeable and as such was able to tell stories about each buildings, fountains, houses etc. A great way with a great guide to discover Lisbon. Thank you. Bruce

This was a really nice tour. My guide Johanna was born and raised in Lisbon so she was a font of information. There were only two other people on the tour (it is February after all) and so it was really personal and easy to ask questions. I would highly recommend this tour. the only caveat is that the address given isn’t exactly accurate. They send you to the corner of the Commercial Plaza next to the river, they are really mid-way through the arches at the tourist office, north side.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Susan! We're very glad that you've enjoy the Tour and we'll convey them to Joana. Regarding the meeting point, may I ask where did you find its information? In our TripAdvisor page it's written that "The meeting point is in front of the Tourism Office which is closer to Rua do Arsenal, under the arches. Our guides are always there with orange backpacks!" Please let us know if you saw somewherelse that the meeting point is close to the river, so we can correct it. Thank you!

Learned a ton walking around and had a great time doing it. I'd recommend this as the first thing to do when you get to Lisbon. We had a tour where my wife and I were the only people on the tour and ti was fantastic. Our guide was very knowledgeable and and very friendly. Make sure to ask for some restaurant suggestions!
