In the residential area, quiet and also elegant, which extends immediately to the west of Bairro Alto and before the Campo de Ourique district, along the route of tram 28 (convenient to get here), stands this large late 19th century basilica. 700. Certainly an imposing façade, and also pleasant, in a style between late Baroque and neoclassical. The columns of the portico and the statues stand out, as well as the two bell towers on the sides, with the top part decorated with torches, but the most famous external element is undoubtedly the dome, which dominates the western panorama of the city, even if to see it up close you have to move a little to the side of the facade. After passing the neoclassical portico you enter the interior, where the environment has more typical characteristics of eighteenth-century churches: a single large nave with a high vault with transept and apsidal presbytery, flanked on the sides by two raised choir lofts with balconies overlooking both the presbytery than on the transept. The decoration is entrusted above all to marble and stucco, but even if the overall appearance may seem majestic and anything but austere, it lacks the exuberance that often distinguishes baroque or rococo churches. On the nave, three arches on each side, interspersed with pairs of pilasters, host as many altars, separated from the nave by marble balustrades (as are the presbytery and the altar of the left transept). In the right transept, next to a small baroque organ (a larger but not clearly visible one is on the choir loft of the counter-façade), there is the funeral mausoleum of Queen Dona Maria I; again from this transept you can access the room where the large eighteenth-century nativity scene by Machado de Castro is located (during our early morning visit, however, the room was closed and we could not find anyone to ask; moreover the entire area of the transept and the presbytery was forbidden to visit). On the cross there is obviously the aforementioned large dome, with a pleasant decoration. For a fee, starting from 10 am you can go up to the terrace at the base of the dome.

In 1789 this basilica was consecrated, it was the first church in the world to be dedicated to the heart of Jesus.
It took a decade to complete. The room behind the tomb of the founder houses a magnificent nativity scene.
A wonderful place to sit, reflect and be mindful.

Basilica de Estrela can be seen from far away from many vantage points in Lisbon, with its white facade end two bell towers. Taking tram 28 there from Chîado is the best way of getting there. The interior is - well - nothing much special, and a quick stop is enough.

I was in Lisbon with my partner and his sister along with her family August 2022. It was our 3rd stop off on our European cruise and we were doing a little bit of exploring and found this church. I’m not religious in the traditional sense but I do like to look at some places of worship as they’re usually architecturally nice to see. There was no fee to enter and it was nice to get out from the heat outside. There were a fair few people inside and it was nice to look around and light a candle if you wanted. A nice building to visit.

This place was so beautiful and way more than expected! We arrived at around 1030am on a Saturday in late June and went straight up the narrow staircase to to the top for 4€ and had the place to ourselves! Views were exceptional
Including the ones from the dome down onto the church. We were allowed to sit and view a christening and felt very special gatecrashers! Park across the road is nice and relaxed and tram 28 goes from right outside.

This is a lovely church that is in need of a clean on it's exterior. However, inside it has a sublime altar with a large mural and white winged angels. There is a fantastic dome and a wonderful painted ceiling with mural down each side of it's aisles.

This church of Sacred Heart of Jesus is opposite nice park Jardim da Estrela, entry is free. Next to it was built convent for Barefoot Carmelites by the order of the Queen. You can go up to the roof but I had bad knee so we didn't. I loved the interior, especially ceiling and colour tone of the walls. The dome in the basilica allows light to come in this church is not so dark as the others.

Walking through Lisbon, my girlfriend and I visited A Basílica da Estrela, or Royal Basilica, Monastery and Convent of the Santíssimo Coração de Jesus, being the Parish Church of Lapa or Nossa Senhora da Lapa, a Catholic temple and former convent of Carmelite nuns .

The church is large and has a dome and 2 towers on top of a hill in the west of the city, the Lapa area, in the parish of Estrela. That's why their names. It was opened in 1794 in a baroque and neoclassical style.

Its beautiful facade features the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the center with statues of various saints and figures that symbolize Faith, Devotion, Gratitude and Liberality. I liked...

Beautiful church. Go up on the roof as the views are amazing. You can also Walk round the dome of the church. It is like the whispering Gallery in St Pauls Cathedral, London. Only 4 Euros to go up to roof, free to enter church.

It's a bit far from the main attractions of Lisboa, but if you're in the area by any chance, perhaps to visit Casa Fernardo Pessoa, it's a very wonderful looking church, so feel free to walk inside and see it!
