About
In 1937 it was named "Barrete Verde" but soon iit was changed to the final name that acquired national and international fame: ADEGA MACHADO. Today one may find a Fado House that renders homage to its history, to the founders and to all those who have added their personal and professional experiences to the memories of ADEGA MACHADO. In the Fado, Amalia Rodrigues proved her affection to this House with two yearly galas; the charismatics Alfredo Marceneiro and Fernando Mauricio came back many times. There are many to be named, but amongst those the interpreters Manuel Fernandes, Francisco Carvalhinho, Raul Nery, Adelino Santos, Beatriz da Conceicao, Maria Amelia Proenca, Maria da Fe and Mariza. The space was totally refurbished based on a new project, with a total preservation of the famous tiled facade and in the interior an area was created to display the large collection of historical images: paintings, drawings and photographs, property of the Machado Family. There is now an additional area, the Wine Cellar that serves traditional tidbits together with a large choice of Portuguese wines.

I can't say that I know what fado is supposed to sound like, but I can say that I enjoyed the show that this place put on. We came as a medium-sized tourist group, and we were well taken care of. The singers are very talented and it was a great way to get a taste of the local culture!

Unless you have won the lottery and don’t mind paying through the nose for food and wine – DON’T GO!
On entry the attention to guests was super-efficient – if not imposing (perhaps read, intimidating). The food, however, was less than average and represented extremely poor value for money. Even worse, a bottle of famously branded Portuguese wine was QUADRUPLE the cost when compared with other restaurants – an absolute RIP-OFF! Recommendation – AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

We really enjoyed the dinner show, the singers were great. That said, the ambience of the restaurant is kind of cold and the food, while not cheap, leaves much to be desired. If I return to Lisbon I'd love to try another fado house, maybe one where you're not obligated to eat dinner.

We were a group of five and were pleasantly surprised by this gem Adega Machado restaurant, 700 meters walking distance from the center. The food was amazing to the tunes of different artist performing Fado. Excellent service and ambience. Top class. Highly recommended. Reasonable prices.

The live music was very good, however, the food was very expensive and of very poor quality in terms of its preparation. The green broth was the only saving grace, the salad, bland and soulless, the cod, dry. In short, I would not repeat.

Not very warm welcome. The Fado performance was too short. The menu is limited and should be translated into French. The dishes are expensive and 3 curls of ice cream thrown into a bowl for €15 is excessive. The cod was as tasteless as the cake. Apart from the beautiful tablecloths and the (few) songs, this establishment is not worth the detour.

Fado very good, but the food and service bad.
Very expensive for what it offers.
The product is very normal and not well prepared at all.
They offer a vegetarian menu (which would be nice if it were vegan) which also leaves something to be desired for the price.
Only the fado is good, as a restaurant, terrible.

The music is obviously lovely. Even though the sets are very short. Some only ten mins which is a shame. But the food. Aaaargh the food. Oh my goodness. We paid €49 each and I had a fish finger and tomato rice followed by cod. My husband had octopus followed by pork. It's some of the worst food we have ever eaten. Almost indelible. Which is such a shame. Especially when you consider the history of the club and the music. They forgot my husbands main course and when it arrived it was very dry. We had dessert as part of the set menu which when we were given it the waiter said sarcastically 'it's wet' as he had asked us why we hadn't eaten all our mains! Bonkers. Anyway. The food should improve. Lisbon really has amazing restaurants so this shouldn't be any different. No excuses really. Fire the chef and regroup. And persuade the musicians to look a bit happier about playing such short sets. Lol.

I'm Portuguese. This fado house was really disappointing... The room ambiance is too fancy, and not typical Portuguese. I asked for cod fish rissoles (pasteis de bacalhau), and they were hot (they should NEVER be served hot but at room temperature), and they fallen apart when eaten, no way possible to eat them with bare hands (as it's supposed to) also they hat too much potato and almost no cod fish.
The singer's and musicians quality is excellent. The ambiance is romantic when they are singing, because they dim the lights.
But the service and room ambiance are snobbish.
It's not a typical fado house, I don't recomend.. If only I've known that before....

We enjoyed our early evening tapas and fado experience at Adega Machado. Since we'd been in Portugal for over a week, we'd heard fado on the streets, but we didn't really know what great fado sounded like until this experience. There was one male and one female singer who took turns, accompanied by both a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar. At the end, both singers joined together for a finale. The music was sorrowful at times, coquettish at others, and always mesmerizing. And we all enjoyed the wine during the performance. Tapas consisted of bread, a yummy but unidentified cheese, prosciutto, and these delicious olives, marinated in some kind of garlic sauce. The experience was just over an hour, which was the perfect amount of time.
