The area
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

Pleasant park to relax under trees, have a walk before or after enjoying bars or restaurants close to the Monastery. My children enjoyes having space for run, do cartwheels and I even tried out some of the gym equipment to burn calories of Pastries of Belem. The statue is interesting but not as impressive as others around the city.

Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque is very close to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. It's a big garden, with a statue (Afonso de Albuquerque, Governor of Portuguese India). It's a relaxed zone, worth if you're in Belém, but that's it.

So if it's so great, why is it only considered average? Well, beautiful though it is, it is very crowded on most sunny days, and incredibly difficult to get to. It is bordered on one side by the river, that's where the stunning view is, but the landside of the park is separated from the town are itself by the main railway line and a very busy road. There are two footbridges, half a mile apart, to enable you to cross the railway. So if you have children, or elderley relatives, or pushchairs, or wheelchairs, you will find the going tough. To be honest when you get there it will be almost certainly be very crowded anyway. But if you like a bit of an adventure then why not give it a go?

The huge 20th century statue in the center of the plaza has no historical markers. It honors a 16th century viceroy of India. The allegories around the base are fascinating. Benches on the perimeter are good for people-watching and recovering from waiting in line to buy custard pastry ("pasta de nata" or "pasta de Belem" - the same thing) from the popular nearby bakery.

The statue is situated at the head of the park and the beginning of the delightful shopping district leading to the older portions of the city. Situated in the Middle of a traffic circle it's presence is enhanced.

Although under construction for improvement when we last visited, a visit a few months earlier showed us the grandeur of this beautiful fountain.

Nothing special, to make you stop for more than 10 minutes. An ordinary square, with a lot of greenery that makes it look like a park, with a beautiful monument in the middle. That's it.

This garden is now very big but well constructed with the bigger trees on the outskirts. Large monument / statute in her middle that is quite artistic. See photos.

Square named after the former governor to India for Portugal. Set in front of the president's palace and featuring a large column statue.
