Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Unlike other hilly parts of Lisbon, this area is mostly flat making it less exhausting to walk around. One might not find miradouros here, but there are many worthwhile attractions like pracas with statues of kings and Arco do Triunfo. It is definitely worth a visit.

The Baixa district is my favorite area in Lisbon. We stayed here in this beautiful district in a wonderful apart-hotel Montebelo Lisbon Downtown. Baixa fills a valley flanked by two hills along the banks of the Rio Tejo. In that valley the neighborhood called Baixa, stretches from the main squares - Rossio and Praca da Figueira to the waterfront. The Baixa is a flat (again why it is my favorite area), pleasant shopping area, no, it's just a paradise for shopaholics. As Lisbon's main crossroads and transportation hub, touristy Baixa has lots of hotels, venerable cafes and pastry shops, and kitschy souvenir stands.

The Baixa has three main squares - beautiful Commercio with access to the river. Rossio and Figueira and three main street Prata (where we stayed), Aurea (more shops and hotels) and Augusta - it is the best part of Baixa, stroll during the day through shops and restaurants, cafes, and also here is a Fashion Museum and a grand arch leading to Comercio Square and the river. This is also a great place for an evening stroll - here you will be entertained by street musicians, singers and dancers. Lots of fun and souvenir shops are open until late.

You will definitely want to explore this very old part of the city, re-built after the earthquake with a grid pattern. Lots of shops here, some very practical. Also lots of tourist restaurants, some good, some basic. You will find a lot of crowds, but not a big problem.

Every corner has at least one souvenir shop where blue and white products made mainly in Asia are the stock. Many streets are filled with restaurants shouldering each others and waiters calling for customers. Old residential buildings are renovated into expensive tourist accomodations. Most of the original local specialist shops have already closed down.

This is the popular, downtown neighborhood in Lisbon for tourists. It is very pretty with lots of restaurants and souvenir shops. You have great sunset views from the Miroudoro do Rio Tejo next to the Praca do Commercio at the end on the Baixa neighborhood on the river. You will definitely spend lots of time in this neighborhood or traversing it while staying in Lisbon. It is a good central location for your hotel too.

Cidade Baixa is a lovely and lively neighbourhood in central Lisbon. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, boutiques, souvenir shops and many other shops. It is the perfect place to walk around and enjoy all the city has to offer.

Lisbon is a beautiful city with a unique charm. Baixa is its the most central part. It was completely destroyed after the earthquake in the eighteenth century. Rebuilt by the Marquis of Pombal . The district has large classical avenues flanked by houses covered in tiles, in typical Lisbon style. There are many shops and restaurants in Baixa. This neighbourhood houses the capital’s most emblematic squares and streets. Nice area for a walk. Every tourist should visit it.

We just loved Lisbon and stayed 5 nights. Baixa has the best of Lisbon’s grand plazas, sculpture and statues and Pombaline architecture, as well as shopping . The main highlights for us were:
i) Praca do Commercio – a beautiful large square on the waterfront which was rebuilt after the devastation of the 1755 earthquake and tsunami
ii) watching the sun set across the Tagus River from the Cais das Colunas
iii) the crazy, wavy paving at Rossio Square. Wave after wave of traditional black and white, limestone and basalt paving almost made you feel woozy if you looked at it for too long. It’s fabulous.
iv) Arco da Rua Augusta
v) Santa Justa elevator – this is a very striking structure, esp when lit up at night and the views from the top platform down over Baixa and towards the castle are just stunning but (and its a big but) the line to get on the lift can be frustratingly long and it's not really worth waiting.

Our family enjoyed strolling this area because it is flat and has lots of varied types of stores. Nothing spectacular, just a pleasant place to shop or window shop. It is also a great place to catch a tram or a bus to other areas. We were even there late, late one night, and did not feel uncomfortable at all, although the stores were closed.

It also provides some cool shade in the afternoon due to the narrow streets and (somewhat) tall buildings.

Baixa has tons of shops and the pedestrian street rua augusta. there is a side street with restaurants that are open in the afternoon when many portuguese restaurants close. So that helps if you get peckish in the afternoon or early evening. the elevator there is cool and praca do comercia and the river are cool to check out.
there will be a drug dealer asking you if you want to buy drugs, believe me they ask everyone, my 60 year old mom was asked 4 times in 2 hours on the street. it is kind of embarrising since the cops do nothign about it (since they are only selling talcum powder or oregano).
But you should definitely check it out if you are in lisbon
