The area

Address
Neighborhood: Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

We really enjoyed our visit. We prebooked tickets online, all you do is buy the tickets and then they are valid for 90 days you aren’t restricted to a date or time which is convenient and it means you don’t need to queue on the day so would recommend you can walk straight up the entrance and scan the barcode. I would highly recommend attend in one of the free guided tours, there isn’t loads of info around the castle so it is about an hour or so of extra info and you get access to areas where the general tickets don’t allow like the Moorish houses which were really interesting. Our tour guide was Joao and he was so knowledgeable and friendly thank you Joao! The tour in English is daily at 3pm but limited to 25 people so arrive early as I would imagine in the summer it is busier than when we went in Feb. After the tour we enjoyed exploring on our own the castle walls with amazing views. Have a Quick Look in the museum too for artefacts found on site and then we went to the viewpoint to watch the sun going down with peacocks wandering round it was beautiful.

Lisbon Castle, dedicated to Saint George, is considered one of the most significant destinations in the city and is in fact an objectively important attraction. It occupies the highest site in Alfama and is divided into a large panoramic park, the remains of the fortifications (the wall walk can be walked on) and a small museum. However, as in other large capitals, even in Lisbon we now have to deal with the dynamics of mass tourism, which often lead to the uncritical exaltation of certain places (which end up being visited "at all costs", apparently simply because they are the first results obtained from an online search "what to see in X") and create imbalances. Meanwhile, it must be said that the entrance to the Castle and even just to the park is not cheap, as you pay a considerable ticket (15 euros in summer 2023), a price that would be worth compensating with a very thorough and unhurried visit . The crowding is almost always notable and you have to wait in long queues; the site is not very easy to reach because being right on the top of the Alfama it is far from any metro station, served by only one bus which is always packed, and which, if approached on foot, requires a fair climb. Anyone who has little time (or insufficient mobility to climb the steep stairs leading to the patrol path) would risk having an experience with an unfavorable cost/benefit ratio. In short, I think it is an interesting attraction to visit, but not one that should be included in any itinerary at all costs. Lisbon offers a lot and, as in all cities full of attractions, it would always be advisable to make a selection of things to see, avoiding easy and uncritical mythologizing of "unmissable" places.

The visit to the castle concerns outdoor environments. The view is spectacular Lisbon, but you have to climb stairs sometimes steep. You can access groups of twenty people at a time , the darkroom where thanks to a kaleidoscope you can admire the city in real time (not on rainy days). The guide explains in English or Portuguese. The visit is included in the entrance fee. The queue for access to the castle was fast, but eventually you can buy the ticket online while waiting. There is a recommended or indicated route... this means that from the same narrow staircase people get on and off...

Very nice view of the city certainly but many lookouts offer such a beautiful view. Save your pennies for other attractions there’s not much to see inside (and you won’t waste time because there’s often a queue). You can enjoy it from the different “miradouro” nearby, and from the alleyways without spending anything!

I had read the reviews that for what it costs (15€) it is not worth entering, because the best are the views. And I totally agree. Since we had the Lisboa Card and it is free with this card, we entered and the walk was pleasant. But EYE, we took our 15-year-old daughter with a Lisbon card, which is reduced price and we were told that for her admission was not free and we had to pay it... €7.5, because it was reduced price for minors of a certain age... I felt a bit conned.

It served as a bulwark protecting the city of Lisbon, changing its masters from the Ostrogothic, Islamic and Catholic powers, and for a while as a royal palace. I think it's fun to see and enjoy the beautiful city of Lisbon with its orange roof and the citadel is a maze. The time of day I was there was before the evening, but I recommend the evening as you can enjoy the view of Lisbon in the sunset.

We weren't planning on visiting Castelo De Sao Jorge, but we are so glad that we did! Every guide/local that we spoke to said that the Castle had the best views of the city, so we decided to visit, on a Saturday in October. We took our Hop-on-Hop-off bus to Praça da Figueira, and then transferred to the 737 bus (right next to the HoHo stop), one way for 4.20 euros for the 2 of us. The 737 departs every 20 minutes and takes about 5-10 minutes to get all the way up the hill to the entrance of the Castle. We decided not to stand in the (pretty short) ticket line and bought tickets from the Castle's website (2x 15 euros) on our phones at the gate and walked right in. The Castle did not disappoint. The grounds are one big museum that you can roam freely, including a pottery/tile exhibit, an archeological site and several patio and cafe areas. Don't forget to notice the gardens, smell the orange trees and visit the peacocks that live on the grounds. The views of the city's terracotta roofs, Alfama’s winding streets and the Tagus River are spectacular. We spent more than 2 hours wandering the grounds taking photos and having a bite at one of the cafes. Then, we walked down the hill through the Alfama District. It really was the perfect day!

We explored the historic Alfama district, Lisbon's oldest and most enchanting neighbourhood. Our first stop was Saint George's Castle, I highly recommend choosing a hotel in this area given its proximity to almost all historical sites, and restaurants. What I gathered is most people went up to the castle for the panoramic views of the city, it left us in awe. From there, we wandered through Alfama’s narrow, winding streets, soaking in the local sights and sounds. Every corner told its own story.

A must-visit landmark in Lisbon. 15€ entry fee that some may say too much but I think it’s worth it to explore this historical site and for the maintenance of it. This is the castle that’s beautifully illuminated and can be seen from afar when walking in downtown Lisbon after dark, so it’s nice to be able to view the city from the top of the castle during daytime. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to go around the property, including the museum. Also look out for the castle guards in the garden area and on top of trees!

We wanted to just see the outside of the castle and enjoy the views but you can’t do that anymore unless you pay the entrance fee. The views from the castle are the best. We then went into the castle and climbed up to the top. We got in the line for the camera obscura and were surprised by how much we enjoyed it. We had to wait in line for about 20 minutes as they take in 21 people at a time and the presentation takes about 15 minutes.

We walked up to the castle from the city centre which took in some interesting sights along the way, passing the cathedral. We arrived about 10:30 having not booked tickets and had to queue about 20 minutes - I would recommend buying tickets online beforehand as you get straight through.

Once you’re in you have the opportunity to visit a fantastically preserved castle with amazing views at every angle. There’s a good exhibition of relics and really interesting information about our patron saint St George. We stopped for a drink at the small hut for coffees that also sells soft drinks.

It’s a relatively modest entry fee and you can easily spend 1-2 hours wandering around. Would recommend.

The castle of Sao Jorge is a special visit especially for the place where it is located, in fact it is located in the highest part of Lisbon and thanks to the various panoramic points it offers it offers an incredible view that leaves even the most demanding gaze breathless. the various streets that make up the visit to the castle and the walls of the latter make us understand the importance that this structure must have had when it was built. An important attraction that allows you to delve into part of the long history of the capital of Portugal. If you buy the entrance ticket on the website you will avoid the long queue that often forms at the box office.

Since this castle is one of the hallmarks of the city, it is worth a look, but we were absolutely not impressed. The palaces and castles in Sintra and other cities in Portugal are much more magnificent. Perhaps this is the effect of the fact that over many years of travel I have already seen many historical castles, but for me personally, the castles of England, France or even the Crusader castle in Jordan were much more interesting. And I think the €15 entry is absolutely overrated. Plus a queue for 25 minutes, inside a crowd of people and a complete lack of any information content or interactivity... A ticket to such a castle should cost a maximum of €5.

The Lisboa Card is a must have in Lisbon. This also gives you "free" access to the castle and you can use the fastline. However, the Lisboa Card is so popular that you have to queue for hours in the "fast line" and there is no one in the normal queue (to buy a ticket from the castle)... be warned!

The Castelo de Sao Jorge is also a must visit in Lisbon. You can stroll around and enjoy the beautiful views, but that's all. The castle is just some walls that you can walk on here and there, and there is some garden where a peacock walks. And that's all.
Disappointing for us to have to wait so long and pay so much money for views that you can also see in other places in the city.

Visited here on my own whilst my husband was running the half marathon. Had a 40 min queue to get in an entrance was €15. Once inside there is very poor to zero signage around the castle explaining what anything is. There were areas that were shut including the shop and this was not indicated when purchasing a ticket. In museum area this meant it was very crowded as there was no throughput out to shop so people were going against the flow. The views are fantastic over the city but that’s basically all you’re paying for as everything else is very poor. This is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues due to multiple and at times steep steps and I would be hesitant to bring young children too as ramparts could be dangerous.

The climb was definitely worth it, and we took some beautiful pictures along the way. It would have been more pleasant to take the
bus, the 737 runs from Praça de Figuera to the Castelo.

We paid €30 for 2 adults (the kids were free) and the line was long, so we bought tickets online and saved some time. There is also someone on site who sells tickets in front of the line, they are a bit more expensive but you don't have to wait.

The view is beautiful, you can walk around and go back up to the castle - whether you want to pay €30 for that is up to you!

A must-see visit that will allow you to have a 360-degree view of Lisbon from its highest hill. Entrance costs 15 euros per adult and is free for children under 13 years old. For the more courageous, it is possible to get there on foot through the picturesque Alfama district.
The castle opens from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November to February. From March it closes at 9:00 p.m. We were there in the middle of the day, in magnificent but windy weather. Bring good shoes and a good backpack, as well as sunglasses. Be patient to access some of the most beautiful viewpoints of this historic site!

We visited around 7.30pm, targeting to see the sunset from the castle grounds, and we were not disappointed at all. While it may appear so on first thought, the entry fee is not awful (€10 per adult, €5 for students and those up to 25 or above 65). The castle sits in some beautiful grounds, with cafes and small bars serving snacks and drinks aplenty. The small permanent exhibit is informative, though I found it a little dry -- there's a hugely deep story to be told here and I didn't get much of a sense for it. The castle itself, however, is wonderful to walk around, go up the ramparts and into the towers, from where views of the city are unparalleled. Highly recommend visiting in the latter part of the day to avoid crowds and (what I imagine must be) blistering sunshine.

Compared to other attractions in Lisbon it was on the pricier side, however for us it was worth it given we were treated to an incredible sunset.

The castle itself doesn't have too much to actually look at - not much by way of information provided at particular parts. You can go up and walk along the walls in places, but to be honest the best thing about here is the view. I imagine at any time of day it's spectacular, but at sunset in particular it's incredible.

It is the highest castle in Lisbon.
It is located higher than other observatories, so you can get a much better view of Lisbon.
Admission fee is 15 euros for adults / 7.50 euros for ages 13 and older (free admission for ages 12 and younger).
The entrance fee is a bit expensive, but the castle is well-preserved and you can get a good view of downtown Lisbon by climbing up the castle, so it doesn't feel like it's a waste of money.

This castle, located atop the Alfama district, is located on the highest of Lisbon's seven hills. The ancient Romans built the castle around the 5th century, and the Muslim Moors built the castle in the 9th century. Later, in 1147, the first king of Portugal, Afonso Enrique, occupied the castle.
When Lisbon was declared the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1255, a royal palace was built in this castle, and successive Portuguese kings continued to use it as a fortress because of its military advantage overlooking the Alfama district, the port, and the Tejo River area.
In 1371, King Joao I, who married Princess Philippa of the Lancastrian royal family of England, dedicated this castle to St. George, the patron saint of England, and it was given the name 'Sao Jorge', which means 'Saint George' in Portuguese. It was destroyed by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 and restored in 1938.
The inside of the castle was once used as a palace and is now a park. Inside the castle, there is a museum that stores relics from the Iron Age, the Moors around the 6th century, to the relics of the 18th century royal family, as well as the Tower of Ulysses, which stored the royal family's major documents and treasures, and the Tower of Loyalty, which was used as the general headquarters.
The best attraction of the castle is the view of Lisbon from here. Let’s go up at sunset and enjoy the view. It is the best place to see a beautiful sunset.
