As we (me, my husband, my sister, and brother-in-law) approached the line awaiting the elevador, we heard someone yell out, "Respeite os touristas!" (respect the tourists) to which the elevador "driver" poked his head out of the "doorway" and yelled back, "Respeite as leis!" (respect the laws). We could only surmise that the verbal altercation had something to do with the law requiring the wearing of masks on public transportation. We will never know. Anyway- the ride was fine and was only truly appreciated when we reached the top and saw the hill that the elevador spared our legs!

Squeezed into the drivers cabin and up we went. Nothing to write home about, I found the Gloria funicular more interesting! If you have nothing to do , it’s part of the Lisbon experience I guess!
Mechanical failure meant we were stuck in this tiny space for about 8 minutes.
It’s €3.80 each way, but free for Me as I had the Lisbon card.

I will leave a review even if we didn't pay for a ride, we just walked to the top so we can wait for the tram and take pictures with it. I have no idea how much do you have to wait for the tram to get up if you don't find it there when you arrive, because when we got up, it was already there. The driver gives you a good couple of minutes to take photos with the tram before heading back down. We loved the spot and I think it's a total must if you ever get to see Lisbon! I don't know if paying for the trip is worth it, but if you are walking through the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, you have to go to the top for some very nice photos :)

This is a tourist trap. The yellow tram is cute, but the other one is blemished with graffiti. Only tourist ride this and they charge you a round trip regardless if you only want to go up. The drivers are not friendly and there are NO beautiful views from this street. There are a few good shops on this street which you’ll miss if you ride this up and down. I don’t know why this is considered and attraction.

We waited and waited but the very unhelpful, miserable driver just left without any passengers, so we walked down the slope. After a stop at a super cafe, we thought we'd have a go at riding up. We waited in the queue as the carriage filled but unfortunately didn't make it on board. The same driver then sat down and waited for nearly 10 minutes before we gave up and left.

Why do people go into customer facing jobs for which they are wholly unsuited to?

Elevador da Bica was inaugurated on June 28, 1892. It connects Sao Paulo street and Largo do Calhariz along Duarte Belo Bica street. Today it is a tourist attraction in Lisbon. An interesting and situated in a very nice place among typical Lisbon houses. Take the opportunity to take pictures on this street, which is one of the most photographed streetsin Lisbon . Very authentic and enjoyable. You can ride with a day ticket for transport.

Buy the Lisbon card and you get free transportation with ANYTHING even the SANTA JUSTA ELVATOR, also the trains for Cascais or Sintra are covered.
Buy the Viva Viagem card(0.5 euro) and get a day ticket 6 euro or a 3 day ticket 13,5 euro and ALL your transportation is covered,, including trams 28,18,12, 15, and Santa Justa Elevator!

We only tried it for experience of it and tiredness. The driver who topped up our travel card was miserable maybe due to tiredness. It departs at the bottom every 15 minutes. We were sat in the middle, should have chosen the front or rear end to have a better view. It was nighttime when we tried it. When we got to the top both sides are full of people having a good time outside the pub and sat on the footpaths. There are drug dealers at the top. I was even offered but politely declined; it was an unpleasant experience that made me question whether that area is safe at all. If you want to take a good photo for your instagram, go there early in the morning when it is less busy but sadly the trash left during night time are also very visible.

Elevator Bica is one of 3 in Lisbon, with graffiti on the one and another one that is red. I absolutely loved this as I'm also a photo lover and this elevator has a beautiful view when walking it down.

Chose to ride on this funicular (on an extremely hot day) because we didn’t make the very steep walk up the hill
after a full day of sight seeing. We didn’t need to queue and we used our Viva Viagem card which we had preloaded at the railway/metro station. As it was a little later in the day we realised that the Bica comes alive at night. Small bars and restaurants heave with people and the funicular takes on a new purpose. People hang out on the track and plenty of warning is given when the car moves off ( although no-one seems in a hurry to
move). The vibrant night life we experienced on our trip on the funicular warranted a repeat visit a little later in the evening and we had some of the best food and the cheapest beer in Lisbon.
