A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Con una historia detrás

Este arco puede corresponder a la Porta do mar, mencionada en los textos árabes del siglo XI, contra los cuales las aguas del tajo chocaban durante la marea alta. Los relatos del asedio a la ciudad islámica en 1147 también mencionan la existencia de una puerta en esta área, documentos del siglo XVI colocan una de las puertas marítimas junto al río en esta ubicación insertada en el volumen de una gran torre. Se le dio una gran importancia porque era utilizada como salida de la sal. El arco, con puertas en cada uno de sus dos extremos, conectaba el terreiro do sal, frente al río, con la antigua rua do almargen, actualmente conocida como rua das canastras.

Formaba parte de la muralla que rodeada el barrio de Alfama y su existencia se remonta al siglo XI. Se accedía por aquí para llegar desde el barrio a los arenales de la playa.
