Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

- Helena B2 contributionsFor our last day in Lisbon we decided to buy a the Lisbon tourist card to optimize on our transit usage, and seeing tourist attractions. It was the day of the marathon so the city was hectic and getting around was extremely difficult. I bought the cards online (50Eurocfor the two) and then we went to the Lisbon tourist office downtown to pick it up. (Everything good so far) We went to the first place to find out it no longer is a part of the program included in the card. (Pay out of pocket). Looked at our map to see what is close to walk to (we both didn’t want to be in the rush of tourists) walked farther from the city and made it to another museum (this one would be 3euro/person to get into without card). Spent an hr or so there then proceeded to walk to get closer to our next destination (which was closed - even though it should have been open). Then we were a bit far from things so decided to hop on the train. The magnetic strip didn’t work. The help desk tested our card and said “it is expired” (we just activated it mere hours before “go back into city to tourist offices”. I managed to contact the offices since our cards only worked for a total of 6euro but they said that they don’t take responsibility for this. For us these cards were a complete waste of money and dealing with the tourist offices in Lisbon a 100% waste of time. I deal with customers on a daily and would never want my customer/client to feel like this especially when you are the office responsible for their “good experience” in your city. They took money, with 0 accountability/responsibility.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2024
- cdelco390 contributionsWatch out! Mefiance. Once the card is booked you cannot buy tickets on the internet with the discount of the lisboa card. You have to go there and therefore queue like the Simple Visitor. During peak periods, if you manage to get a ticket, you will get the 10.15 or 20% discount, but you can’t book in advance. Some museums, requires a mandatory reservation...Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 30, 2024
- Nicole MCommunaute d'Agglomeration Pau-Pyrenees, France10 contributionsLisboa card a scam, arrived on the spot our cards purchased on the internet at the beginning of March are not valid because change of Award. On the website the validity was one year! We had to buy 6 cards or a loss of 115€, impossible to pay only the extra. Moreover their flyer is unworthy of the Portuguese people!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024
- Ana L1 contributionIt's the first and only review I've ever written, but the treatment was so horrible that I think it was worth it. When we entered, the guy at the counter didn't even look at us, he continued playing with his cell phone. We asked him for a map and he pointed it at us with a contemptuous gesture of the head, nor did he offer it to us. We asked him what to do in Lisbon in one day and the answer was "either see the old town or go to Belem", that's it. Neither recommendations nor a tour of the map nor a goodbye. Something like this had never happened to me in a tourist office. Thank goodness we toured the city on our own and we loved it, because for that boy we would have said hello and run away. Portugal does not deserve such a poor first impression.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 29, 2024
- Nicoleta C1 contributionI went to the Ask Me Lisboa – Mosteiro dos Jerónimos tourist point on 14th of September at 11:30 to ask where I can get the travel card for Lisboa that I purchased online. The girl at the stand told me to go to the train station, but being my first time in Lisbon I couldn’t find it so I returned to her stand to ask for more directions. Annoyed at me she told me she takes the train every morning and that I just have to go left. Well sorry for being lost on my first day here I was just asking for help. I instantly left the stand and asked people around for help to get to the station. I hope portugaise people are not all so unfriendry snd unwellcome as this lady. Quite an unpleasant experience to start my trip to Lisbon…Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 14, 2024
- Vincent M1 contributionThe scam: you buy online, but you still have to go and exchange it, and that’s a big hassle. And what's more, it is no longer possible to cancel. Then you realize that a lot of what you can do with it is closed on Mondays. The tourist exists to be scammed, it is well known.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 25, 2024

Hi, Kate. If like me you don't like driving in Lisbon (because of the roundabouts, a real headache 😃 ) Here is our number 1 tip, very handy for public transport in Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais, and tickets to some popular tourist sites. This is the Lisboa/Lisboa card
Free and unlimited public transport for the number of days chosen (24h, 48h or 72h)
Includes: Metro, buses, trams and funiculars of the CARRIS lines. CP train to Sintra, Cascais and the south margin of the Tagus.
Free admission to 51 y places in Lisbon, including the Torre de Belém (check open or closed places before buying, as some sites were under renovation in early January 2025. Check also public holidays)
Up to 50% discount on selected tourist activities and places. A complete list a leaflet is provided
You can buy it in advance online at visit Lisboa and pick it up at Lisbon airport upon arrival. It is non-refundable, and even with your Lisboa card, you will still come to the museum or castle counter to get the entrance ticket. Sometimes there is a left-hand line for cardholders and many do not know and realize it at the end of the line. Alternatively you can also buy it locally in Lisbon. We bought it instead of the trade, at the office of Ask me Lisboa, without hassle.
The card is activated only from the first time you use public transit or enter the museum.
The card allowed us to skip the line at Château Saint-Georges.
In Sintra, the card gave you free admission to the New Museum and the Myths and Legends interactive exhibition at the Sintra Tourist Office. The map is handy if you stay several days in Lisbon, to enjoy it amply. Thank you 🙂

Lisboa Card equals armed robbery. Ok for free transport but unusable in major museums where entry is free with the card. You have to queue (2 hours at the Jeronimos, Belem Tower), or pay for the other museums.
The price is too expensive for transport alone!

I booked 24 hrs cards for me and my girlfriend, using benefit points from my employer, so can't really evaluate price/effectivity :D But anyway it seems to me like a good way to save some money, if you are a museum enjoyer.
Tip 1: plan your route in advance, because Lisbon is pretty big and attractions are distributed in different districts - so commuting between locations will take some time.
Tip 2: always check if the card covers entry to selected museums/attractions - some of them are free with card, and some others will only give you a ticket discount.
Tip3: DON'T place the card with metal/magnetic stuff - I guess its magnetic wire may be easily demagnetized - so you will get it non-functional before it expires :/

Terrible experience with the guy that was very impolite and aggressive. He opened the point at 10:15 (and not 10 as indicated on the website) and there was a long queue in front of it. But this is not absolutely the problem. As soon as he opened, we told him that we had to change the Lisboa Card bought online and he told us with a terrible manner that we were in the wrong places. I told him that I had read this information online on the lisboacard website and he started to threat us like we were absolutely stupid. I gently told him that this was not the correct way to threat a tourist that is just asking information (which should be HIS job by the way). And do you know what he told us while we were leaving? That we were STUPID.

Used the Ask me Lisboa booth at the airport to pick up Lisboa cards. They were quick, efficient, friendly and helpful with information. Others have claimed the lines were long, but we did not encounter that. Would recommend for new visitors to Lisbon or Portugal.

DON’T BUY IN ADVANCE-you will run all over town trying to find an open office to exchange your tickets. I chatted before we left and they said you cannot pick up in advance of day of use - turns out you can and chat is both useless and wrong. Airport people tell you to avoid long line and pick up near Rossio train station which is very “easy” - WRONG! They are closed. Tried to call and see what was open. No answer. Found a tourist stand where the card is sold and he said literally “you cannot for ticket and you have to hike all the way to Commerce square”. We did and finally got the tickets 1 1/2 hours after trying. I said to woman at the desk at Commerce and she very nastily told me all the places you can pick up and I said the wines you say are closed and the airport one said to go to them, she rolled her eyes and was a total jerk - summary is don’t do in advance and frankly not at all

We didn't collect or Lisboa cards at the airport, the queue was enormous.....
Following day decided to collect them here and the queue was twice as long..... We waited in line for 35 minutes+....
Once you try to use your card at the more popular sites, the queue will no longer be measured in minutes but HOURS.
Monastery in Belem over 2 hours, Belem Tower well over an hour. The start of the tram 28 queue was probably 400 metres from the end.
Because this place is the most popular pick up point for the Lisboa card it is no good for booking tours etc, unless of course you actually enjoy queuing.

This is the largest of Lisbon tourist information centres. Lots of leaflets about all manner of attractions. Knowledgeable staff and they also publish monthly booklets about what is happening in Lisbon.
