About
Throughout the years, this site was closed and neglected, having suffered a fast degradation process, that reached both its structure and its artistic furnishing. As a result of the parish’s resilience, whilst having the support of some individuals, it was possible to commence a preservation project for this valuable heritage, with its roof and exterior walls being improved during the process; some procedures were also carried out for the decorative painting of the church’s interior. With the increasing flow of tourism, the idea of opening the church on a permanent basis then emerged, as well as the intention to make it possible to visit the tower and, from that site, all who visit us can discover the most enchanting view of Lisbon over the Tejo's River. With your visit you will contribute to the maintenance of the now existing jobs, whilst ensuring the protection and appreciation of this wonderful building of the 18th century.

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.

- Becky HHastings, United Kingdom373 contributionsGreat customer serviceThe tower is just round the corner from the castle and was really enjoyable. Although not the biggest tower, you get a free drink with your ticket and a video detailing the history of the church and Lisbon. For the low cost of the tower especially with a Lisbon card, it's well worth a visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2024
- Connor MGlasgow, United Kingdom232 contributionsVery ReflectiveStraight out from Lisbon Castle and I decide to go into this. It's a good reflective peaceful church that allows one to unwind their mind, like most churches do. It has nice statues and paintings and is good to sit in.Visited October 2024Traveled soloWritten October 3, 2024
- Robin W. FoodCroatia471 contributionsRosaryThe church is undergoing renovation, so we couldn't see much – only the area around the altar. However, you can pray in silence here, and then climb the bell tower, which offers a beautiful view of part of the city. There's no crowd (or maybe we were just lucky), so at the top of the bell tower, you can quietly listen to the wind and even touch the church bells. The entrance fee is 5 €, and it includes a drink of your choice – I recommend trying ginja for a complete experience. At the entrance, there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy a keepsake. If you are Catholic, if your parents are, or if you're on a path to conversion, or you simply respect other cultures, I recommend buying one of the beautiful wooden rosaries they sell here for 6 €.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 5, 2024

There is a large complex on this strategic spot, and you can sit and rest after your climb. Nice views from up here.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 15, 2024

Igreja de Santa Cruz do Castelo is not a particularly big or great church. It is a comparatively rather small church. It is important more for its historic and cultural value rather than anything else. The church was built in 1147, on a site where a mosque used to stand, a short time after Christian rule was established with the defeat of the Moors, who had ruled the area for years. It suffered some damage in later times and was destroyed. The building we see today was actually built around 1776. Interestingly, the Portuguese royal family christened their children in this church! When you visit the area you will also be able to get some amazing, panoramic views of the city, something that is really worth the effort and the small price.

Once you’ve gone around the castle up the road, this is a great place to visit. You can simply sit in the cool of the church or, if you are up to a small climb, you can also access the church tower, complete with a bell it’s impossible not to try to ring (quietly). The price for climbing the tower is €5, but it comes with a drink you can take up to the top with you. We had some delicious green wine and locally-produced orange juice. Once you’re up in the bell tower, we couldn’t resist gently dinging the bell. Beware! Even a gentle tap produces quite a noise. We felt bad about the noise, but when we got back down, we found out that pretty much everyone who goes up there does this. After climbing the tower, we visited a small photographic exhibition on the upper floor of the church (entry also comes with the ticket price) and chatted with staff who were absolutely lovely. Thanks for making us so welcome!

At the cost of only 2.50 euros each, we were able to climb to the top of Lisbon's highest historical tower and marvel at the views of the Vasco da Gama Bridge, St. Vincent's Church and Monastery, the National Pantheon, and the Tagus river in addition to other sights. The ticket price also included entry to the top of the Church of Santa Cruz do Castlo - a calm and serene place filled with history. Well worth a visit.

Unfortunately this viewpoint is not what expected. We paid €5 (which included a choice of drink ranging from coffee to wine) and we walked up a very narrow and low ceiling stoned staircase. We arrived at a tiny platform on top of the church which had 7 people already and they had to move around to make space for us. There is only one window side you can take pictures from so you need to wait your turn. After you take your pictures there is nothing more to do as you have more people arriving so we felt we had to go. I would not recommend it.

Great views and a sneaky look into St Jorge castle without paying 15 euro! The tower costs 5 euro to enter and includes a drink and entrance to the art exhibition at the church next door. 5 euro is probably a bit steep but the staff were knowledgeable and sat chatting for some time. The views were great. The art exhibition left a bit to be desired... religious icons,
The area around the castle is good to explore too.

For little money, you get a nice view on parts of the old town of Lisbon - and that without masses of tourists. Even though the place is not off the beaten track, 98 % of visitors seem to get stuck by the entrance to the castle and miss the Torre Da Igreja Do Castelo de Sao Jorge. Wonder through the lanes behind the castle and you will find the place.
When I was there, there was also an interesting photo exhibition on display.

This Church and tower are located just below the historic Castle and are well worth finding the time to explore. The church is peaceful and beautiful inside and the tower has stunning views. In addition, across the square is a good cafe!

Worst customer experience ever. Ticket for the tower advertised for 2.5euros (see picture attached) but at the entrance I was forced to buy the ticket for 5euros since the standard ticket was not available (seriously???).
I wanted to visit the tower with my 8-year-old kid which obviously doesn’t drink wine, and honestly I didn’t want wine either.
Anyway, I preferred skipping this tower at this condition as I felt this was definitely a way of ripping off tourists.
Shame on you guys!!

Dear Luca V,
Thank your for your comment. We are sorry that you had such a bad experience. Probably there was some kind of misunderstanding, since we have, indeed, two kinds of tickets: the 2,5 euros ticket, which includes climbing to the bell tower and also visiting the church exhibit, and the 5 euros ticket which includes all that and also one drink (wine, beer, coffee, orange juice or other drinks available). We hope you can come back and give us a second chance! All the best!

A hidden gem in Lisbon near to the castle. Tickets cost 5 euros and you climb 50 steps up to a wonderful bell tower with amazing views. You get a free drink too included in the ticket price - choose from soft drinks, vino verde, small sagres beer or a shot of local cherry brandy liquer. Super friendly staff and would highly recommend.

This is a good spot to pass some of your free time in Lisbon. There is an old castle, in a manner of speaking... it's not really much, only a few walls standing. But the hill is good for the panoramic views it offers of the city. And it's all for the cost of a very cheap entry ticket. Certainly worth the effort and the small cost.
