Why this little church with its big history isn't more known to many, is a mystery to me. On a walk through Lisbon's oldest neighborhood, the Alfama, we followed the Rua de Santiago to its end and almost literally ran into this historic church. Here begins Portugal's primary route for pilgrims walking to Spain's Santiago de Compostela, the capital city of Galicia and alleged burial place of the apostle, James. The church is small, white, and not especially prominent; but its place in religious history is major and its beauty is timeless.

I rather suspect that the previous reviewer has attached the wrong photo as I was very careful to identify the building when taking my photo and have checked key back to other sources. Iit is an impressive small building with an interesting history, being the symbolic starting point of Caminho Portugués.
