About
In the morning, Mercado da Ribeira is a traditional food market that dates back to the 1890s, where you'll find local vendors selling fresh produce, flowers, fish, cheese, and other groceries. When the market closes, head to the next-door dining hall (Time Out Market), where there are over 30 stalls showcasing the best of Lisbon's culinary scene. Curated by Time Out’s food writers and editors, you'll find street food vendors and Michelin-star chefs serving up traditional Portuguese fare, seafood, pizza, ice cream, and more. Get your food, grab a beer, and find a seat by the communal tables. Meal times are busy, so get there early to avoid the lines. Don't miss all the best spots on a walking food tour of Lisbon. – Tripadvisor

- claudio dViterbo, Italy45,074 contributionsClassic covered city market that differs from the others due to the predominant part reserved for catering. Even if its history is older, the current building was built in 1882 but we see it (apart from interior modernizations which took place in the 20th and 21st centuries) as it appears after the restoration works which ended in 1930 (following the disastrous fire of 1891). As I was saying, the main feature is the large space reserved for catering, where around 40 different refreshment points (including gourmet ones) operate, with 750 seats available, of which 500 are indoors; was created in 2014 under the name Time Out Market. It is not a place to eat cheaply: the offer is varied and of good quality and the prices are therefore adequate. Unfortunately, given its central location (in front of the Cais do Sodré station), it is overrun by crowds of people (with lots of tourists), so at lunch time the restaurant area appears more like a bedlam (I don't know as it is in the evening). Aside from catering, there is still a large sector dedicated to the classic food stalls of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables as well as, in this market, a large presence of florists. Upstairs there is the space reserved for events. The classic market stalls are open from 10am to 2pm while the catering is active until midnight (until 2am from Thursday to Saturday).Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 16, 2024
- PressyHIstres, France70 contributionsOriginal concept which offers several “restaurants” in the same place sharing a common room for tables. The quality is there, but be careful, the room fills up very quickly and therefore seats are rare. The price is also a little higher than in other restaurants.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 21, 2024
- caster9415 contributionsHaving also visited markets where it is possible to eat in other cities, we expected something less commercial and more real, as well as cheap. There are foods from different cultures, from Italian pizza (19 Euros for a sausage and provola cheese, but nothing exceptional) to Portuguese ham (8 Euros for a modest-sized sandwich) and good Italian ice cream (4 Euros for a medium cup). Good Portuguese wine (6 Euros per glass) as well as fish, hamburgers, sushi, hot dogs, good Portuguese and French pastries. You order and then there are large tables in the center where you can sit and eat, leaving trays and glasses there because there is a tidying up service. It's worth an experience but I don't think I would repeat it.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 20, 2024
- WitoldJelenia Gora, Poland43 contributionsWe have arrived to Setubal by train from Lisbon. Kind man at the, station when asked for directions invited us to his car and gave us a lift. Market looks, and smells fresh aroma of gardens and the sea. If you were blindfolded you would have never guessed that 1/4 of the market was consisting of fish and seafood stalls offering abundance of fresh catch. We treated ourselves to a dozen of oysters washed down with a local white wine at the bar just 20 yards from the stalls under the same roof. Next we have sampled about 5 local cheeses and bought some for later. Compared with Lisbon prices were very much lower. Next we took a short walk to the sea front. This was charming and very tasty experience.Visited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 16, 2025
- Federico & FrancescaGambara, Italy323 contributionsDuring our trip to Lisbon we always had lunch in this market to look for "typical goodies", on the first day eating at "Susana Felicidade" some excellent bacalhau and roasted polvo, both very good, but the bacalhau was fantastic! We recommend trying it! While on the second day we had lunch at "Manteigaria Silva", the bruschetta with Iberian ham was excellent here too! We recommend stopping by the market to eat typical foods!Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 30, 2024
- federico SLondon, United Kingdom8 contributionsMarket by the sea. Very chaotic place. Cleanliness is not really among the main factors even if they try it turns out to be very dirty. It is not easy to find a place especially for families with children. On the other hand, there is a lot of choice of food even if the prices are not the cheapest.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2024
- Helen SLondon, United Kingdom74 contributionsWe were recommended this place by a WithLocals tour guide, because one of us is vegetarian and they said it would be a good place to get some classic local food while also having interesting vegetarian options. They were right! In the end we both chose something from Susana Felicidade - I had octopus and he had a sweet potato, pea, egg and mushroom concoction that he was very happy with. There were loads of great options, including for beer, wine, and desserts, and a DJ playing music that people were dancing too - loud enough to be danceable, quiet enough to allow diners to chat to each other, which I think is the perfect volume!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 20, 2024
- annama64Turin, Italy6 contributionsMany offers with typical foods. Cooked very well. The only problem in rush hour is the difficulty of finding a seat at the tables, especially if there are more than 2. Good cleaning, the attendants frequently go to remove dishes and clean tables.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 11, 2024
- Ian JSt Ives, United Kingdom407 contributionsWhat a superb experience. In the morning it is a bustling market and then it transforms into a wonderful eating/drinking experience in the evening. We loved it. We visited one morning and instantly decided to return in the evening for food. There is a central seating area with food stalls all around. Simply find a table then select what you want to eat and drink from the numerous stalls. Great quality in a relaxed and fun environment. Highly recommended.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 5, 2024

Once a food market in the historic centre of Lisbon, this complex is now quite difficult to describe and evaluate because it actually includes two very different realities that coexist as if separated at home; hence my vote, which is the result of an average.
The western sector, open in the morning, has maintained the characteristics of the traditional market, with the usual supply of food, especially fruit and vegetables; overall it is interesting, for the assortment, for the not excessive prices, and for a certain authenticity; it is not impossible to see residents doing their daily shopping, which is much more unlikely instead in the equally well-known Bolhão market in Porto.
In the other sector, with its already very evocative name of Time Out Market, the market gives way... to the markets: a huge shack with a jumble of outlets where everything - lights, sounds, colors, writing, ubiquitous English - seems made especially to ensnare the tourist, who is manned with everything from pizza to sushi, but nothing of what the average Portuguese usually eats. Prices are sky-high, almost all outlets require only electronic payments (in a country where paying by cash is by far the prevailing option), the manner of consumption - once you have laboriously obtained the order you have to go crazy to try to perch on a piece of free bench - reminiscent of those of battery-locked chickens, or, if you prefer, a 1936 Chaplin film.
Already in the morning the crowding is substantial, but in the evening, as I was told,
turns into a bolgia from which the Lebanese carefully steer clear. Even more so in a city like Lisbon, where you can still eat in small typical restaurants for very reasonable amounts, eating your own meals here seems really self-defeating to me.

We chose to visit this market as we wanted to enjoy a local Portuguese market.
The market has got 2 parts, one part which is opened until noon and where from you can purchase all kinds of fruits, vegetables, meat and flowers. And another part where you can find a lot of mini-restaurants with a variety of food which you can take away or eat there. The prices here are accesible for everyone and the dishes cover all tastes, wheather it’s drinks or food, both local & international: cocktails, freshes, smoothies, pastries, appetisers, all sorts of meet and sea fruits cooked or grilled.
We arrived at noon when the market was very crowded. We were glad to find here the restaurants of few famous chefs from Lisbon decorated with Michelin stars like Vincent Farges, Marlene Vieira, Henrique Sá Pessoa and Miguel Castro e Silva and, although we haven’t had the complex experience of a Michelin stars restaurant, we had the chance to enjoy a dish from all of them.

The construction of Mercado da Ribeira, also known as Time Out, began in the year 1600. But it needed to be rebuilt several times as it was hit by a major earthquake in 1755 and a fire in 1983. Until 1980 it also served as a poultry slaughterhouse and until the 2000s it was the city's main supplier. The market has more than 30 spaces, including restaurants, bars, cafes and pastry shops, in addition to dozens of fruit, vegetable, fish and meat stalls. It also has a concert hall, a terrace for warmer days, and flower and souvenir shops. It is possible to have several meals and try typical Portuguese cuisine from renowned chefs' menus. There is an underground parking lot next door and it is recommended to visit on weekdays, as at the weekend the space is very popular with visitors, and it is difficult to find a place to sit and eat. Mercado da Ribeira opens every day and from Sunday to Wednesday it is open from 10:00 to 00:00 and from Thursday to Saturday, it continues until 02:00.

Place with many small kiosks where you can order all kinds of food from Portuguese to more international ones. I recommend going outside lunch and dinner hours because at that time there is a lot of confusion and finding a seat is really challenging. An experience worth having even if there was a lot of confusion but it was well managed in the end

The food court is nothing short of amazing. There is something to entice every palate and some of the nation's aspiring chefs are represented here.
Although there are an extensive array of tables or benches available, it can be difficult at peak periods to find a couple of seats together in the communal dining area.
We arrived prior to 2pm and it was disappointing to discover that the flower and vegetable market closed around 2.30pm. Having opted to eat first, we never got to visit the markets. We will be wiser next time around.
The Time Out Market as it is known as is well worth a visit.

It is one more of those that have been lavished in Lisbon lately. Queues to buy food and drinks, expensive prices and you eat at tables next to everyone. The food trays take a long time to be collected. Pitiful place

The Mercado is now an unmissable destination on every trip to Lisbon.
Numerous places where you can eat everything: from typical Portuguese dishes, to sushi, from pasta to paste de nata.
There is also the actual market part open during the day in the side part of the structure but the central part is the real attraction!

It’s an old market now turned into a very cool food destination. Small kitchens, wine shops, ice cream shops all grouped together in a small d market.
I ate at Pinoquio, the clams and Jake were of the highest quality and the service was friendly and very high standard. An absolute must to stop and eat in Lisbon.

Mercado da Ribeira (Time Out Market) is a tourist-must-visit. The location is excellent (next to metro, ferry terminal and train station).
There is a huge food hall, traditional market place and craft market (the day we visited).
The traditional market opens everyday but closes quite early. The food hall is always busy. The price is quite high for the same food compared to other food courts or restaurants.
