Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

- Becky HHastings, United Kingdom379 contributionsFantastic museumProbably one of the best museums we visited in Lisbon. With the Lisbon card we got in for free and we're really glad we went in. The coaches were really ornate and beautiful, with plenty of information about each coach to read. The museum is really unique and I'd recommend it to anybody visiting the city.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 8, 2024
- Sara-MeminellaVenice, Italy245 contributionsInterestingNice museum if you like that kind of thing. Entrance included in the Lisboa card. Outside the museum there is also a carriage with a very well-kept horse that makes short trips for €5.00 per personVisited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 21, 2024
- Vincent C583 contributionsInterestingBetter than expected tbh. I had low expectations but it was quite interesting to read the history and see how elaborate, simple or functional these coaches were used in the past. Well preserved. Although it was odd to find since so many buildings in the area are called COACH MUSEUM. If you have extra time or the Lisboa Card, worth a visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2024
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,760 contributionsFabulousWe were very impressed with this museum. It first started in the parking lot where we walked through an automobile exhibition of modern “coaches” before heading inside to see the historical coaches. It seemed to be a local car club. Once inside we paid our admission and then took the elevator up to the museum. We have never seen so many carriages in one place. However the Royal carriages just blew us away. They were opulent, luxurious and some as large as a small truck. Along the walls were carriage, rider and horse outfits, accessories, etc. We learned a lot from the great signage and detailed descriptions for everything on display. This museum was one of the highlights of our Lisbon visit.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2024
- badpupsHertfordshire, United Kingdom77 contributionsVery interesting museum - make sure to visit both buildingsInteresting museum with coaches of different ages and from different countries. We first visited the smaller museum across the road in the old riding school which was fascinating. The larger museum in a purpose built building has a lot more exhibits. I loved it but my husband was bored! However, there were plenty of places for him to sit while I was wandering around.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024
- NessaGisele244 contributionsCoolest Museum! Don’t skip! This was one of the coolest museums I’ve been to. I had never gone to a museum like this before and seeing these coaches throughout history was so cool. We used Rick Steves’s self guided tour to get us through the museum. We unfortunately did not get to see the Landau of the Regicide coach since it was at another location. The entrance and museum wasn’t what I was expecting it to be so definitely follow the signs to find it. Also you get in for free with the Lisboa cardVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 15, 2024
- sokolaleneBergamo, Italy3,293 contributionsAmazingAnother unique museum in Lisbon and, fortunately, without crowds of tourists. A few hundred meters near Jerónimos in the heat there was a queue for a couple of hours, and in this unique place in the cool there were about 6 people with us at the same time. Maybe the Lisbon museums do not have enough promotion? There is no such collection of carriages, and such stunning beauty, anywhere in the world. The carriages are decorated with figures, paintings, and many details that you can look at endlessly. Until I saw it with my own eyes, I didn’t think it was so exciting. By the way, entry here is also free with a Lisbon card. A must visit.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 3, 2024
- bluevoterSan Francisco, California587 contributionsExcellent display of old royal coaches and moreI first visited the National Museum of Coaches in 2006 when all of the old royal coaches and historic vehicles were displayed in a small space with poor lighting, making it hard to see the individual coaches. I was very pleased to see the new museum with an excellent display of the coaches, dating back to the 17th Century. It's not hard to combine a visit here with a visit to the nearby Jeronimos Monastery and Presidential Palace. Most people should be able to explore the museum in 60-90 minutes.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 8, 2024
- GISELE SSantos, SP444 contributionsImpressive carriage collectionI confess that I was surprised by the museum. He has a large number of carriages including D.Pedro's, it was very interesting to see the evolution of time throughout the carriages. Everything is beautiful and well maintained, it's worth the trip, I was delighted. Everyone was very polite from reception to inside the museumVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2024
- KennethEastChicago, Illinois179 contributionsA delightful surprise!Friends had recommended a visit here. So did Rick Steves. I was curious but skeptical. But everyone in our group loved this place. It's not like any museum you've likely visited before. We visited only the main building. It's huge! So each of the 70 or more coaches has plenty of room. You stroll from one whimsical coach to the next.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2024

Museum of Coaches, Belem Portugal: Belem is a head spin for a day trip. The long summer queues means a pear-shaped itinerary. We only had 45 minutes for Museum of Coaches – or 1 level of exhibits. It was truly baffling with how transportation was like for royals and a good reality pinch of how lucky we are to live in modern times where wheels are fast ands furious. The coaches evolve and are fascinating to see how art, creativity go hand in hand with coaches. #eatstylishtravelstylish

Museum with numerous cars and explanation for each, more detailed at the level of architecture. The beauty of each is unmistakable and sometimes not understood but explained by a Guide.
I visited the museum and on the same day I viewed the program "Guided Visit" on the same, and I confess that the experience was total, bringing both together.
One suggestion would be to use the staff who are in the museum to guide them through a guided tour reporting where each car passed.
A word of appreciation to the team that does the maintenance of the cars and advertises them, an authentic national monument on the material level!

My husband and I visited one afternoon a couple hours before closing and probably spent about 1.5 hrs wandering (could have spent less time, but we didn’t have anywhere lined up after so there wasn’t a rush).
The collection of coaches was impressive and we enjoyed learning about the different styles and eras they came from. The museum also had a specialty art exhibit in the middle which was also quite interesting.
The Lisbon card covered the ticket fees— although we personally didn’t find the card a good value for our needs.

The museum displays in a vast pavilion a unique heritage of royal carriages from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; in my guide it says that it is the most visited collection in Portugal. There are carriages of all types, from simple carriages, to mobile carriages, to postal carriages, to carriages used by ambassadors, kings and queens, from those for simple walking to those for representation/parades. It is precisely the latter, in their 18th century baroque magnificence, that most captures the visitor's attention. It is obviously a monothematic museum, so it may not be of interest to everyone, even if, as already mentioned, there are carriages of undoubted beauty on display which are difficult to see elsewhere, if only in this concentration and variety. We then didn't have to worry about whether the price of the ticket justified the visit, because we entered for free thanks to the Lisbon Card.

A museum that doesn’t pay for a mine from outside but inside magnificent vintage carriages , not many people, you spend less than an hour there except for big amateurs! You will see the ancestor of the sedan and coupe! Big plus explanations in French!!!

Beautiful place ! However, the museum staff are extremely rude, even being rude to visitors. I thought that a group of Italian visitors would leave 10 minutes before closing time because the employees were tired and wanted to leave early. They forced us to leave before the end time of the visits. It's terrible, someone behind you talking about the hunt, 20 minutes left, the museum is closing, you have to be quick, 18 minutes left, the museum is closing. Until we got tired and left the rest of the tour behind because their attitude took away all the pleasure of the visit! I paid 8 euros and did not benefit from my rights!!

My visit to the National Museum of Cars was a very satisfying experience, full of fascinating and surprising moments. This museum, which houses one of the most important Collections of cars in the world, offers a true journey in time, allowing us to see the grandness of the cars used by the nobility and royalty over the centuries.
The variety and conservation status of the exhibited pieces are truly remarkable. Each car is an artwork in itself, with carefully worked details and an ornamental wealth that impresses. In addition, the explanations provided on each vehicle are clear and informative, helping to contextualize the use and historical importance of each part.
One of the highlights of the visit was the organization of the museum. The arrangement of the carriages allows for a pleasant and easy viewing, with a well thought out flow that leads the visitor through different seasons and styles of carriages. The spacious and modern space of the new building perfectly complements the grandiosity of the exposed pieces, providing a comfortable and pleasant environment to explore
However, despite all the positive points, I felt that some aspects could be improved. Although the information provided is quite complete, greater interactiveness, such as multimedia guides or augmented reality, could further enrich the experience, especially for younger visitors or those with less knowledge of the topic.
In conclusion, the National Museum of Cars is undoubtedly an indispensable destination for those who visit Lisbon and have an interest in history and culture.

There are 2 coach museums near each other, and I think it's the newer one that's the largest. We could have visited both, but we only went to the larger one. It's right next to the Earthquake Museum. The National Coach Museum was quite interesting. We enjoyed seeing all the various coaches and imagining being back in those days of travel! We then ate lunch at the cafe connected to the museum. Great food! BTW, it wasn't hard to get to Belem. We just took the metro subway to the Cais do Sodre stop and then the suburban train to the Belem stop (and that train is free with the metro passes -- both the Viva Viagem and the Lisboa Card).

Cautionary tale - there are two buildings which form part of this museum. There is the older heritage building (Old Royal Riding School ) on one side of square / park and the new very modern museum on the next side going towards river. This is not obvious to a visitor if walking from Belem/Mosteiro dos Jerónimo or hopping off tram near Old Royal Riding School. There is no signage that we saw in Old Riding School nor did the ticket desk personnel point out that there was another building to visit as part of the visit. This would explain the views of some of the other reviewers who missed the new museum building and only visited the small collection in the Royal Riding School.

This museum has the largest and most valuable collection of coaches in the world.
Each carriage is more magnificent than the other -- historic artisans went to great lengths to make their vehicles stand out. One of the most outstanding has gilded figures on the tailgate. Several coaches belonged to European royal families, including a 19-century coach used by Queen Elizabeth when she visited Lisbon. We enjoyed this museum very much!

Hi! Yes, the museum has a park and it is free but very limited number of parking spots. Nearby in the other side of the train line (nearby the boat station) you have a big and free park. If you have any doubts, don't hesitate to ask I know the area quite well :)
