Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

This is a 19th century construction of the King Pedro IV. It is located in a prominent spot, in Rossio Square, or as it is formally known, Praca Dom Pedro IV. The statue stands at the top of a very tall Corinthian type column which is also elaborately decorated at the lower part with some symbolic figures. The statue is the centrepiece of the large Square which also features a couple of lovely baroque type fountains. It's worth a look.

Located in the square of the same name, though also popularly known as Rossio, this column is dedicated to Pedro IV, King of Portugal. The bronze statue, erected in 1870, stands on a marble column 23 meters high. At the base on the pedestal are 4 allegorical female figures: prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. Four cardinal virtues attributed to the king. Overall, this is an attractive monument, flanked to the north and south of the square by Baroque style fountains.

Located in the center of Praca do Rossio this monument was erected in 1870 dedicated to King Pedro IV. The bronze statue of the king rests atop a 75-foot-tall column, which makes it very difficult to see. Around the base of the column are 4 figures representing Strength, Wisdom, Justice, and Restraint.

Historical landmark plaza in central Lisbon named after Dom Pedro IV whose dedicated imposing column stands out. He was also known as “The Liberator”. He was the first Emperor of Brazil as well as the King of Portugal between 1826 and 1834. He founded a local museum, now known as Soares dos Reis National Museum. On this day there was an art exhibit known as Portugal Livre which highlighted some local talent.

The actual statue stands high above on an elaborate column with various figures at the base of the column. However, food stalls and temporary posters have obscured most of the base itself if one is at the Rossio Square. Interestingly enough, the best view for the column and statue is at the viewing platform at the top of Elevador de Santa Justa in Bairro Alto.

This is the centrepiece monument at Praça de D. Pedro IV (also referred to as Rossio Square). It was erected here in 1870 and stands amongst several interesting fountains and other monuments on the square.
What you will see is a 23-metre tall Corinthian column, topped with a statue of the King of Portugal (1826) and Emperor of Brazil (1822-31) in uniform and cloak, crowned and appears to be glancing towards his subjects, while grasping a scroll document in his right hand.
There are allegorical engravings at the bottom of the column while four seated allegorical female figures can be seen seated around the base of the monument. These represent - justice, wisdom, strength and moderation, attributes associated with Dom Pedro IV.

Very impressive statue in the middle of one of the most important squares in town. You will surely see it as you walk around and you should at least pay a little attention to it. No one is completely sure who is depicted here, but the square is important.

This column stand sin tribute to King Pedro IV of Portugal of the royal house of Braganza. His legacy was to lead the independence of Brazil from the then Portuguese Empire and becoming the Emperor of Brazil through it's early and turbulent birth, but ultimately abdicating.
The statue stands atop a 23 metres high corinthian column and depicts the king wearing a general's uniform with a cloak, his head crowned in laurels, and holding the Constitutional Charter of 1826 in his right hand. At the base of the column are the four female allegorical figures of Justice, Wisdom, Strength, and Moderation. Qualities supposedly of the King.

This monument is in the center of the plaza de Rossio and is situated between two fountains. The plaza is a busy area with a metro station and several bus and tram routes stopping around the plaza.
