About
Inaugurated in October 2016 within the framework of EDP Foundation’s long-running policy of cultural patronage, MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is an international institution dedicated to arouse critical discourse and creative practice with the intent of sparking new understandings about the historical present and a responsible commitment to the future. Located on the riverfront in Lisbon’s historical Belém district, MAAT comprises a former power station built in 1908 – MAAT Central – and a contemporary building – MAAT Gallery – connected via a park that extends along the River Tagus: MAAT Garden. In addition to the programme of temporary exhibitions and activities – Agenda – the museum also features permanent exhibitions such as The Electricity Factory at Central Tejo and the sculptures in the outdoor spaces. MAAT advocates a concept of the museum as a catalyst for converting discourse into action through the sharing of positions and the formulation of knowledge.

The area

Address
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

    An architectural pearl
First on my list of Lisbon's fine museum selection was this interesting new building on the riverfront. Valkyrie Octopus by world famous Joana Vasconcelos is a very large textile installation first exhibited in a Macau resort. Without a table reservation I had to eat my lunch outside on the terrace though view of the bridge was a plus. I returned later to take more pictures of it from the roof and found the best way to reach the museum by tram and connecting walkway over the railroad.

Interesting combination of art and technology
Surprising combination of art and technology. The technological part, a power plant dissected, is interesting not only for youngsters, but for everyone. Well done. The art section with Joana Vasconcelos as the main attraction is worth visiting. Portuguese artists are not so well known unfortunately.

    a bit dissapointing
Well, the entry ticket is for both buildings, first, the old powerhouse building is interesting. but the second building did not have much to show and it took us barely 30 minutes to visit. Maybe later when it is the tourists season, they would have more to show.

Outside a must. Inside a definite no.
Save your money and definitely go to the building and the roof and do not go inside. The exhibits in the cool building were strange and weird and not on a good way. Just bizarre. The old building is just more odd exhibits and the workings of the old energy plant. A big pass.

Very different, and very much worth it.
One of the highlights of our trip. Very different museum to what one is used to, but will need a little bit of a science / engineering background to appreciate. Well worth the time if you are curious about energy as an industry.

Well worth the trip from Lisbon central
An excellent trip alongside the Cultural centre nearby. There are two beautiful buildings beside each other. One is the former power station, now a museum and this gallery, a beautiful tiled organic form by the riverside.

    Immersive modern art in Belém
Fantastic space & design. We enjoyed hearing and seeing people interact with the Ernesto Neto exhibition. It felt and sounded a bit primal! The Nicolas Floch exhibition was eerie and had a similarly visceral effect. The deep sea still photographs and a huge video installation were fantastic.

Great building, exhibits are usually “OK”
Small museum with fantastic architecture, worth seeing for that alone. However, the exhibits are usually nothing special. Fine if you’re already in the area or coming to see the building itself, but not worth making a destination.

    Well worth the visit
Two parts to the museum - the old red brick power station, fabulously restored with all the machinery/plant there to see, and the new sleek modern building with the art. Both were great to go round with my son, spending longer than anticipated there. Well worth the visit.

    An interesting building
Located in a beautiful spot on the river with great views, Maat is a funky space but limited on exhibits. When we went, there was an interactive music piece and a thought-provoking collection based on a photographic journal. The cafe is a great place to sit and enjoy the outlook to the other side of the Tagus, and you must also make sure to walk on the roof!

I went with my daughter as she planned it as part of our Lisbon trip. I am an architect and teach design and technology and she thought it would be perfect for me. The building itself was great-good views and an interesting form but we paid 18 euros and were in the building for no more than 20 minutes. We thought we had missed some of the exhibits as all we could find were a world map showing how we are destroying the environment; a few laser cut architectural models; out dated video reels and a fairly interesting “labyrinth” of city videos-that’s pretty much it. We have better in our home town local museums. Go and see the building and enjoy the views but save your 18 euros for something else.

While visiting Lisbon, you cannot miss MAAT! This is the new "Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia" and already a Lisbon's landmark. On the banks of the iconic Tagus River, in the historical "Belém" quarter, stands this recently opened cultural complex, where the new building coexists fantastically with the old Tejo Power Station. Both buildings hold permanent and temporary exhibitions on 38,000 m². From the "pedestrian" roof of the new building, the most amazing views of the Tagus and its bridge! You can combine your visit with other main attractions in the "Belém" area, as the "Torre de Belém", "Mosteiro dos Jerónimos", "Museu Nacional dos Coches" and last but not least, the famous "Casa dos Pastéis de Belém" (with the delicious and unforgettable Portuguese "Pastéis de Nata"). Enjoy!

We visited this museum yesterday and loved the power station part, interesting to see how it worked and the hard work men would have had to do to get this working for the city. We’re from Scotland and there were machines from our country from the engineering firms of that time, nice to see the link between countries.
The rest of the exhibition had different sections which were okay - modern art, photos but maybe could do with a basic guide or change as it did seem abit random as it all merged together.

The worst museum experience ever! Totally incoherent and poorly organized. It was next to impossible to find the entrance. I crossed the footbridge, saw no sign whatsoever pointing to the ticket counter. I wandered haphazardly and found the entrance to one building. They staff were incapable of pointing me to the entrance to the former power station building. When I finally found the other entrance, I hadn’t noticed the ticket office off to one side, easy to overlook. I presented my ticket at the labeled “entrance” and was told I had to go upstairs to have my ticket scanned for entry. Basically I spent 20 minutes trying to find how to get inside, and only 20 minutes inside, since there was virtually nothing to see but a few random “contemporary” art installations that held no interest whatsoever. Complete waste of time and money.

Random random random. Felt like I was tripping the whole way round. Not what I expected. Quirky neon modern art installations. Not suitable if epileptic. Interesting info about the power station. If you are very into quirky modern art and a deep thinker you'll probably like it!

Exceptional view, superb architecture. Very pleasant café, with friendly staff and very welcome beer in front of the Tejo at sunset. One detail: the contents are very lacking (which for a contemporary art museum is no small problem!!). The installations of "modest art" are truly unworthy of such a noble place, despite the admirable efforts of the curators...Why not put a little more effort into finding works that are worth the price that visitors pay for the ticket?

Expected more architecture, but only the museum is the architecture piece. Art was displayed in the basement but exhibition was only the underwater reefs photography. Technology was found in the Tepco power station but only focused on Energy. Overall felt it was not worth 12 euros per person entry ticket

One ticket gets you into here and the other contemporary art space next door in the Tejo Power Station. MAAT is a bizarre space, long and thin with no straight lines. It's pot luck what exhibition you get, the space demands something dramatic. Reminiscent of the Gulbenkian in Bilbao or Tate Modern. If you liked them you will probably love MAAT.

Also, they are open Mondays!!!

The building is spectacular and the views are amazing. BUT the museum does not know what it wants do be. Modern art installations are next to exhibitions on climate change, historical portugese figures and power plant turbines. The whole layout is chaotic and quite random.
Definitely more interesting for locals, not tourists.
Save your money for something else.

Since the queue in front of the Jeronimos Monastery seemed too long to us that day and in the blazing sun, we decided to visit the MAAT Museum. In the old part, a former power plant, the history of power generation is demonstrated. The large rooms are really very impressive.
In the new part, large-scale art installations are exhibited. They didn't really appeal to me personally. The interior of the museum rather disappointed me. Entrance fee for both houses: 11€
