Top ways to experience Largo de Sao Domingos

The area

Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
How to get there

The Sao Domingos square is a transition point from the Martim Moniz area to the Rossio Station. This is where during the day, one can look for souvenir deals at all the small merchants displaying their cheap fare on carts, narrow shops and on the ground. In the evening, when all the commercial activity comes to an end, the homeless of Lisbon with start unravelling their sleeping bags and find a sheltered piece of sidewalk for the night.
The place has definitely its charm, especially before dark, when live here is so vivid and diverse.

Largo São Domingos is one of many small public squares situated around the main sightseeing area of Baixa. It is situated just north and east of Rossio. Here you will find Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Palácio da Independência, Igreja de Sao Domingos and perhaps most interesting, A Ginjinha which is one of the most famous places around the city to try shots of the wildly popular Portuguese sour cherry liquor called Ginginha (ginja).

The Largo de Sao Dominos is a small plaza with the Sao Domingos church and a memorial of the Jewish massacre of 1506. This square is adjacent to Rossio square.

This square seems to be frequented by lots of homeless and beggars as in a prime location. Some great buildings around plus the Gingha bar.

This square is located in front of the Sao Domingo church, which received the same name. The church is beautiful and terrible at the same time (be curious why by reading a separate topic about it) and is a must-see. If you want to see it, you can't avoid this square. Today the square is home to classic old bars such as Ginjinha, where you can taste a favorite Lisbon drink - the sweet liquor, made from the ginja berry (like a sour cherry), sugar, cinnamon and brandy. We tried it (they sell it in shots) it’s very tasty!!

Also here you can see the stone monument remembers the Jewish massacre of 1506. Many Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 took refuge in Portugal. But when a drought ravaged the country, Lisbonites killed several thousand of them on this square. In the evening, homeless people and unemployed refugees/immigrants gather here to spend time, exchange news from their home countries and just look at the tourists. A little unsafe. My 4 stars.

Wednesday 9th October and we were sightseeing in Lisbon and we visited his historic Square in the centre of the City.

It is also where the magnificent Church of Igreja de Sao Domingos is situated (reviewed separately) and it's from where the Square got its name.

It is also home to the memorial to the victims of the 1506 Jewish Massacre, this was erected on April 2006 to commemorate the 500th anniversary (reviewed separately).

As part of its chequered history the Square was used as a slave market.

This is a huge open square in the crowded city so one gets a nice perspective on the surrounding buildings. This is not the center of tourism, so more everyday life here. Pleasant.

This square is just off Rossio and is central in Lisbon. Important buildings all around, yet fairly peaceful since cross town traffic can't get here. Pleasant.

The church is located near one of the central squares at the metro stop, and interesting to see that the columns and the altar were left ruined by the last fire that hit it...
