Mrs V and I were picked up in Central Lisbon (a couple of minutes walk from our apartment) by Andre for our small group tour. Four couples in total covering England/Wales, USA, Canada, and New Zealand so the conversation was flowing immediately. As a guide Andre was excellent - he was local (so could talk to the small details as well as the 'big hand' history), articulate, knowledgeable, and had a real passion for Portugal.
First stop was Pena Palace, and we were there ahead of the crowds - it really felt as though we had the place to ourselves. Note: the tour was unguided, but this did not detract from the beauty of the palace and the amazing views it commands over the region.
Following this was a stop at the amazing Quinta de Regaleira, an estate with the most amazing gardens that you could ever see. Not only this, there are hints of ancient secret orders, with hidden tunnels and concealed symbolism, and a 9-level Initiation Well which nods to Dante's Divine Comedy.
A short walk into the charming town of Sintra revealed a wealth of restaurants, pastry shops (seemingly a staple of every Portuguese town) and stunning architecture; lunch in a small restaurant followed; my octopus was the best that I had ever had (albeit the first), and a glass of local vinho verde helped to maintain the relaxed feel of the day
Back in the van, we next headed to Cabo da Roca, the Westernmost point of mainland Europe - beautiful and wild - before heading into Cascais for a final stop. Although we were only there for an hour or so, Cascais was lovely, and after queuing for an amazing ice-cream we wandered the genteel town and both agreed that it would be an amazing place to stay.
We then headed back to Lisbon where Andre dropped us back in Rossio Square; throughout the day he helped the group to share his love of history, culture, and Portugal in general, and was really happy to provide guidance to the group regarding restaurants, places of interest, things to do...etc. All in all an amazing day, and a trip that I would recommend to anyone. Thank you to "Portuguese For a Day" for making it a special day...
