This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.

Having visited several Catholic shrines over the world, I found Fatima to be very serene, although the size of the parkinglot outside suggest it can be very busy here. There is a huge square with churches on either side. Tombs of the 2 women and...More

My family wanted to stop here and I'm glad we did. The basilica was beautiful. It was busy, but because of how wide open the space is, it was not overwhelming. I'm glad we stopped!

I think tour companies offer day trips or excursions from the Algarve to Fatima. There are also trains or buses going to Fatima as well. Hope that answers your question. Enjoy your trip.

There is a place to light candles , and you could leave them inside the church as well. It's a beautiful place.
