This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.

Glad to have visited it for 2nd time - especially in this year celebrating 100th anniversary of the apparitions....Participating to masses, rosary, torchlight procession, way of cross & other visits were highlights of my stay in Fatima.

We found the spacious area interesting and I'm sure functional when they need to fit 650,000 people.

This is a huge religious edifice, it is a modern building that celebrates the supposed appearance of Jesus's mother Mary to three shepherd children in 1916. The size of the courtyard and the cathedral is amazing

I think tour companies offer day trips or excursions from the Algarve to Fatima. There are also trains or buses going to Fatima as well. Hope that answers your question. Enjoy your trip.

There is a place to light candles , and you could leave them inside the church as well. It's a beautiful place.
