    Beautiful and spiritual
We took a bus from Fatima , and realize the town has a higher altitude and was colder than Lisbon. Churches and chapels ultra modern and lacking usual ornate alters us older Catholics accustomed to. Attended outdoor mass that was beautiful. Large beautiful monuments and gardens. Little village has nice traditional restaurants and stores. I would have enjoyed more time exploring.

Significant Catholic Pilgrimage Site, A Moving Experience
One of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, the Sanctuary of Fatima is located where three shepherd children saw visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1917. The Miracle of the Sun occurred here on 13 October 1917. It was an astounding event witnessed by tens of thousands where the sun whirled and appeared to crash to earth, immediately drying all who had been soaked by rains. The event is considered a supernatural event by the Church. The message of Fatima to the children was that of repentance by man. All three of the children (two of whom were beatified as saints) are buried in the basilica at Fatima. You can feel the spiritual atmosphere here for sure. Enter the basilica by the front stairs or via slight inclining ramps on the sides. The basilica is tranquil and well-designed for an early 20th century church. Fatima can be reached via day tours from Lisbon.

    Fatima in the springtime.
I was dragged along to Fatima given my distaste for the Catholic church. However, despite my views I was impressed. These guys are good at marketing and spending their believers money. The new church is an enormous concrete blockhouse from the outside [i didnt go in] and the square in frontof it is an enormous, impressive area. An abstract Christ on the Cross in front of the new church is very powerful. There is a long 'path' for supplicants to proceed on their knees to the old church - kneepads provided.

    Religious pilgrimage site!
The church itself is not all that grand, rather the appeal here is the story of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the three shepard girls back in 1917. Thousands of people make the pilgrimage to Fatima every year. Thankfully, the crowds weren't so great the day we visited.

    Very impressive and meaningful
My wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour. This is a major place in Christianity. We were quite impressed with the entire place, and also seeing people on their knees in prayer, etc. Fatima is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its Sanctuary welcomes millions of pilgrims from all over the world. Fatima's fame is due to the Apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary that appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. We visited the great Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima) built in neoclassical style, with a huge convent. It is ironic that Fatima is a Muslim name. We enjoy seeing this place, and appreciate its significance.

    Amazing Feeling
The place speaks for itself, with its profound religious significance, making you feel something special as you enter the Sanctuary. It’s an incredible experience of Faith and Spirituality! Moreover, the ease of travel to the Sanctuary, from Oriente Station (Lisbon) to the Fátima Bus Station, is noteworthy. The affordable price and proximity to the Sanctuary allow you to complete the entire journey on foot, comfortably.

    Beautiful place, Nice experience
I’m not a religious person but you could see that it was very sacred to everyone there. We visited the interactive museum near gate 11 and this was brilliant, there were many services going on and lots of people around, we had a good look around and stayed in a hotel in the next street so managed to go over to the site again on the evening and it was also stunning at night. Worth a visit for anyone to see but if you are religious this will be an amazing place and experience

    Beautiful, Peaceful, Spiritually Vibrant
This was my second visit to Fatima but the first when I stayed longer than a single day. Brought my family with me too and they all loved it. Don’t make my (first) mistake - stay at least a week and even visit surrounding sites. You’ll get so much more out of this kind of visit. Besides spending time inspecting every square inch of the old Basilica for its wondrous art, architecture, and tombs of the Saints, be sure to participate in one of the many, daily masses at the outdoor Capelinha, in front of the Basilica. Very moving, no matter what language is spoken. Although you won’t find much of interest in the massive, newer but barn-like Basilica, you will indeed find much to marvel at in the Museum of Light. Finally, be sure to participate in the candle-lit International Rosary and Procession around the Basilica square at night. Memorable! I’d love to come back, again, and perhaps stay longer. Soooo spiritually enriching.

A must visit when coming to Fatima and be blessed
This was one-off the holliest places we ever visited. My wife and I had a wonderful experience attending the rosary and procession. Is starts at 2130 hrs everyday and ends at about 2300 hrs. You feel the presence of Mother Mary in this place where she appeared 100 years ago.

Impressive square, honestly a little underwhelming church
Entering the big square, you cannot be in awe of the massiveness of it all. Bigger than the Vatican, this square stands out by size. The church itself was impressive from the outside, quite modest on the inside. Have to say I was a little underwhelmed by the church itself. The parking is plenty (especcially at the back of the church). There are numerous picknick tables near the parking area behind the church and the public toilets next to the campervan parking behind the church are about the cleanest I’ve ever visited.

This is a large basilica that serves multiple functions. From what I saw, it was the destination of people who were ill and hoping for a cure. The basilica has a huge courtyard. Inside are the tombs of the three children who saw Our Lady of Fatima and were given visions.

It is a must to be able to visit this pilgrim site. Waited years for this chance . Huge square , impressive architecture of the basilica . The many chapels , of course the Apparition site was not to be missed . Before entering don’t forget to buy rosaries or any religious materials to be blessed by the priest. Don’t forget to light a candle for those personal prayers. We were able to attend a mass thanks to the perseverance of our tour guide. Not too many people are in Fátima the 2nd week of March . News of Covid-19 is starting to affect the community by this time.

You must come! Amazing basilica and surrounding plaza area, along with the Chapel and second (huge, overflow) basilica. To see the children's tombs inside the basilica was also very special. This location in my opinion ranks among the most important Christian sites anywhere. The candle offering area is unlike anything I've ever seen.

As far as basilicas/cathedrals/churches go, it is not the most ornate or beautiful. The structure itself is quite impressive, as is the huge square in front of it but I can't really imagine someone who isn't Catholic or someone who wasn't raised Catholic to really make this a stop. Truthfully, if short on time, I wouldn't necessarily say this was a must see. But stopping here prompted us to stop by the houses of the children associated with the miracles, as well as the visitation sites. You could spend as little as 15 minutes at the church to well over an hour (especially if you take pictures).

I know the story of the apparition of Our Lady to 3 children since my childhood as I was brought up as Catholic. So visiting this place was like a great gift to me. It was built to impress, that's for sure. It's massive building at the end of more than huge square. You need to manage several stairs which was a bit challenge for me having problem with knees. In the middle is open and covered altar which is used , I think, during religious holidays and special occasions. I don't know what I expected to be inside but the space is not highly decorated, I would say it's very moderate to simple as it's about the faith. When we were there half of the benches were fenced due to cleaning/vacuuming the walls. Most visitors were congregated around the chapel with the tombs of Jacinta and Francisco. The view from the entry platform on the square is amazing, I could imagine how it can be full of people. It definitely made spiritual impact on me.

Visiting the Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima, I expected a place of solitude, reflection, and spiritual significance. Unfortunately, what I encountered felt more like a marketplace than a holy site. The commercialism was overwhelming, and it detracted from the sacred atmosphere that one would expect in such a renowned pilgrimage destination.

The gift shop, prominently located on the grounds, seemed to prioritize selling items over fostering a sense of reverence. From recycled candles marketed for blessings to glow-in-the-dark Virgin Mary statues, the experience felt cheap and superficial. It was as if I had wandered into a county fair rather than a spiritual sanctuary. The focus on spending money and purchasing religious trinkets made it difficult to connect with the deeper meaning of the site.

As someone who isn’t Catholic, I came with an open mind, hoping to understand the importance of this place. Instead, I left feeling disillusioned by the blatant commercialization of a location that should inspire reflection and peace. The contrast between the intended sacredness of the site and the reality of the experience was disappointing, and I couldn't shake the feeling that the true spirit of the place had been lost in the pursuit of profit.

We had seen videos of the 3 shepherd children and their experiences at Fatima and being on a cruise that stopped in Lisbon we decided to visit on a tour. The drive from Lisbon took 90 minutes along fast roads. Once there we had 3 hours to explore the site. Whether you believe or not there is a definite atmosphere generated by the thousands of pilgrims showing their devotion on this holy site. The Basilica and its associated buildings are more than impressive structures both inside and out. There was a mass taking place in the Basilica that was standing room only so we respectfully viewed inside from the back before we could view the tombs of the 3 children. We would say a visit is a must for both non and devoted believers as the site is impressive and you will definitely get something out it.

The Basilica is amazing. The altar is beautifully decorated with a more modern painting. The church is decorated with beautiful gold-plated depictions of Jesus’ life - highlighted in the Rosary. The burial sites of the 3 children St Jacinda, St Francisco and Sister Lucia are near the front on both sides. St. Jacinda and St. Francisco had been buried in the cemetery in their village, but their bodies were moved to the Basilica. They discovered that St. Jacinda’s body was incorruptible, in other words completely intact. St. Francisco’s had decomposed as would have otherwise been expected given the date the children had passed. The outside view is spectacular with the white Basilica against the bright blue sky.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima is one of the largest Marian temples in the world of the Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is located in Cova da Iria, in the city of Fátima, municipality of Ourém, in Portugal, 128 kilometers from the capital Lisbon. It was erected on the site of Our Lady's apparitions to the three shepherd children – Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Its construction began in 1919 with the construction of the Chapel of Apparitions, which is the heart of the Sanctuary, but over the years there was a need to expand the sanctuary, today it has two basilicas and the space receives around 6 million pilgrims per year. The image that is venerated in the Capelinha, measuring 1.04 meters high, was made of cedar wood from Brazil by the sculptor José Ferreira Thedim and was offered by Gilberto Fernandes dos Santos. On the most solemn days, it is adorned with a precious crown, in which is embedded the bullet from the attack on Pope John Paul II, on May 13, 1981. On other days, the crown is on display in the Rectory building. There is a statue in honor of Pope John Paul II.
