It was my 10th trips to Cascais and this time I finally found the time to visit this jewel. What an amazing place. It was first a military complex they became the holiday residence of King Dom Luis I and Queen D. Maria Pia.The king was passionate about oceanography and was a close friend to Prince Albert I of Monacao. The King Dom Luis I died in one the room facing the sea. They were sharing the same pasison for ocean. After almost 50 years in complete abandon and a complete restoration from 2004 to 2011, today it is a Presidency residence. You can only visit the Palacio with a guided tour. 11h30 from Wednesday to Sunday (but it depends if the President is there) with some additional visit. We were only 4 visitors and our guide Maria Ana was really great. We visited the Chapel of Our Lady of Victory. It is a small church and full of details. The altar and the wooden arched ceiling is just beautiful. We then entered in the Royal Palace of the Citadel itself. There is an entrance hall and a room on the left where porcelain dishes are on display. Then we went on the first floor where there are several rooms and the hightlight is the huge covered balcony facing the Bay of Cascais. It is adjacent to the beautiful dinning room. On the second floor are the bedrooms for guests. We also saw the gorgeous King's bathroom and many other living rooms, billiard room. This place is really beautiful and it is a succession of rooms each more beautiful than the next. I wish I could have visited the Palace before. A must see when in Cascais.

Palacio Cidadela de Cascais: Former summer residence of the Portuguese Kings from 1870 to 1910 until the fall of the monarchy. Served as the summer residence of the Portuguese Republic President for several periods, and was later abandoned for a long period.

Re-opened again in 2011 after a great reconstruction work.

It is today a musem, open for visitors, inside the fortress and next to the new hotel pestana cidadela cascais. It is also still used as accommodation for some foreign heads of state.

It's open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM, with guided visits.
Totally recommended a visit if you are staying or passing by Cascais.

The Citadel is a set of fortifications built between 1488 and 1648. Historically a defense structure and a palace for the royals. Today and what you will experience is a complex consisting of the roiginal citadel, a high end hotel, art galleries, restaurant and museum.

We loved walking around here making sense of the statues, visiting the art galleries whilst enjoying some good food and drinks.

Set within the grounds of the old fort, now a lovely hotel, is this restored residence of the President. As we were staying at the hotel it was an easy walk across the courtyard, For others a walk to the historic part. It is well worth the walk. We were shown around by Margaride, an excellent well informed guide. In fact on this tour we could call her our personal guide as were the only two. We were shown into the personal rooms of the President and also to the newer restored visitor's rooms. All beautifully presented.
My personal favourite part of the building was the long glass conservatory, restored from its 1930s origins and extended, it has magnificent views over the bay. There was also some beautiful original 1930s furniture.
A personal big Thank You to Margaride who made the visit so special.
There is a small shop at the entrance and the entrance fee a very resonable 3 euros.

Well this citadel is much bigger then I initially thought, I walked all the way around it, as it's closed for visitors now anyways (coz a thing called covid-19), but still worth coming here and checking out the exterior, and it's a beautiful seaside location anyways

Our guide was most engaging and gave a comprehensive and interesting account of the Palace and its times. From the era as a Royal Summer Residence to its modern role as hosting visiting Heads of State.

Our Lady of Victory Chapel is ornate without being overly exuberant. An attractive pulpit and altar area are contemplative and tranquil.

Lovely dark wood furnishings are throughout and imbue the rooms with a richness. Grand chandeliers and much art works are further highlights.

A remarkable space for lavish receptions was the last tour stop. With views to the sea and modern azulejos depicting maritime imagery, it was easy to imagine the atmosphere and ambiance of such gatherings.
