- V HHertfordshire, United Kingdom179 contributionsPaula Rego’s ‘house of stories’ is a great place for the Rego fan or newcomer to her work. It has just reopened with a new presentation of the collection. No car is necessary if you come by train from Lisbon. Cascais is a wonderfully walkable place with a huge number of cafes and restaurants. The gallery has a collection which reflects the artist’s development from her youth to her early days as an art student in England. There are also other stages of her work well represented. I went with a young female relative (14) who was so fascinated that she went back the next day to give the last room more time. Rego’s lifetime representation of the human and female experience is very timely. Her Anglophile life is also reflected in her work particularly the nursery rhyme graphic work. Cascais is such a pretty place to visit any way but this gallery makes it a destination on its own. The staff are very helpful, there’s a very good shop and cafe. The train ride from Lisbon is only 40 minutes, is inexpensive and takes you along the coast the whole way. There is a particularly nice park over the road (with an excellent cafe) with a lake which is the home to a wonderful turtle community who seem to be permanently basking in the sun.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 14, 2024
- Mark JLondon, United Kingdom12 contributionsVisited several museums and cultural centres but had a nagging feeling that there were big holes in the state’s depiction of Portugal’s history. Cue Paula Rego’s visual critique of the Salazar regime. Honest and brave and incredibly challenging, and well worth a visit.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 6, 2024
- careyontravelsBoulder, Colorado85 contributionsThe building and the art museum are worth a visit in Cascais. We didn't have too much time unfortunately, but had received a free voucher for all museums from our short term rental host. It is definitely worth a visit, with temporary exhibits in addition to Rego's work.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 6, 2024
- Naomi GLondon, United Kingdom11 contributionsWe came on a pilgrimage to see more of Paula Rego's work and certainly weren't disappointed. Fabulous building, lovely staff - welcoming and very knowledgable - and the current exhibition - Paula Rego's work with fairy tales was, literally, enchanting. Totally worth the trip to Cascais, in fact it was what had brought us to Portugal.Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 30, 2024

The building in which the artwork is housed is both interesting and beautiful. Inside, the space is airy, fresh and well lit and is a nice place to spend some time. Having seen some of Paula Rego's quite astonishing large pastel paintings in an Edinburgh exhibition recently, it was a voyage of discovery for us to view her mostly smaller works in different mediums in Cascais. The art on display at the time of our visit covered a period of about fifty years of the artist's life. Whether or not one "likes" her work, it is certainly engaging and makes one think. It is not pretty, but it is important and has meaning and relevance - and surely that is what art is about. The entrance fee is cheap and includes an introductory leaflet well worth reading.

The story of her life with many tragic episodes is told on film by Paula herself. Luckily she managed to receive also fame as the outstanding red museum was built in 2009, she died in 2022. All her works are based on a story, some ancient, many modern which she first forms by dressing real people to their given roles or uses self made puppets. My first encounter with her mesmerizing art was years back in London where she studied. This pilgrimage to Cascais was most satisfying as few of her paintings can be found in Lisbon.

I checked the website to find out if the museum was open. It was, and we spent one day driving from south Portugal to get there.
On arriving we were told the museum was open but no one was allowed to go in as they were changing exhibitions. I asked why this information was not on the website and was told that the website gives the dates of the openings and closing of the exhibitions and the museum was in fact open. That is to say the bookshop and the cafe were open.
The museum would be well advised to make clear on their website exactly what is available to the public. I have since read a number of reviews that complain of exactly the same situation. Needless to say we were very disappointed. So best to ring up and ask if it's possible to see the artwork not just ask if the museum is open.

Great exhibition in a wonderful space. This is a small gallery and an hour or two is plenty of time to see Paula Rego's work and how this changed over the years - particularly when she moved to London. I believe most of her drawings went to the museum. They helpfully provide a short guide in English and all information alongside the pictures is also provided in English. Lovely cafe in the grounds too.

A relaxing train ride from Lisbon gets you to Cascais where you can leisurely stroll to the Casa Das Historias. Even if you don't know Rego's work too well, the curation of paintings, prints, drawings is diverse and well rounded. The wall panels are informative. Striking exterior architecture.

This is a museum dedicated to just one artist. It might put some people off a bit, as it lacks the variety of other museums with more general contents, especially if you don´t know the artist and her work beforehand.
It boasts many sketches, etchings, drawings by Rego in its two huge rooms and some original figures here and there -a sort of dummies-. I admit that contemporary art leaves me cold most of the times, so I must say that I didn´t like much the collection nor its aesthetics. The museum, housed in a nice and original building with its pyramidal shape, is rather small, but besides the exhibition rooms there are an auditorium, shops, a good cafeteria, with a agreeable terrace ideal for a sunny afternoon and a nice garden. It can be a good cultural activity if you are exploring the area and entrance fees aren´t expensive, but I wouldn´t consider it essential for your visit in Portugal, if you are short of time.

The building was really beautiful and the works by Paula Rego on display were brilliant. When I visited, her 1970s work were on display.( they interchange them)
As this museum is dedicated to her work, fans of her work and surrealism will totally enjoy it.
Worth a visit.

One Paula Rego work, a textile, otherwise, her work isn’t there until 04/11/21! So we are from the UK on a break in Portugal & travelled a round trip of 3 hrs & had planned our day around the visit. We saw a small exhibition of Brit notable artists’ (mostly minor) work! No mention of there being no Paula Rego work atm on website. Staff were grumpy, Such a shame, please keep your website updated!

It is a stunning building in a very pleasant part of Cascais. I was hoping to see more of Rego’s paintings but I think many of them are on loan to the Tate gallery! Even so, the exhibition contained too many sketches and not enough substantial work in my opinion.
It was interesting though. I feel like I know a little bit more about Paula Rego. The explanations beside the paintings were quite detailed but could have gone further.

Interesting modern building - very striking exterior. However I afraid I did not know the artists work before I visited and I wish I had researched. I found her work to be very unpleasant and I cannot I unsee some of the images. We completed the museum in about 15 minutes. It is small inside. Then we sat sat for a while in the café waiting for service that did not come despite it being very quiet with few people. So in summary if you are a fan visit - if you are just visiting the area and are curious- do your research first.

Are Paula Rego's paintings on display now (April 11 - 12?) I ask because one reviewer commented that they were not on display at the end of March.

We have just visited the museum this morning, 12 April, and Paula Rego’s paintings are on display.
