What made Alfonso so memorable was his conquest of India. "Conquest" is so over-rated. However, looking at the bright-side, his statue is in a beautiful park-like stretch of greenery and who can argue with that?

Named after the 2d governor of Portuguese India, offers the best views of Belem Palace. Rest here before going over to see the Monument of the Discoveries.

Interesting statue of this explorer/colonizer. Had an interesting conversation with our guide about this man's legacy. Read up on his achievements/legacy and this statue has some meaning - otherwise, just another statue to a dead person.
