The area
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

Rather a small park
Apr 2021
Nothing special, to make you stop for more than 10 minutes. An ordinary square, with a lot of greenery that makes it look like a park, with a beautiful monument in the middle. That's it.

Small tidy garden with statute
Aug 2021 • Couples
This garden is now very big but well constructed with the bigger trees on the outskirts. Large monument / statute in her middle that is quite artistic. See photos.

Nice

Pleasant park to relax under trees, have a walk before or after enjoying bars or restaurants close to the Monastery. My children enjoyes having space for run, do cartwheels and I even tried out some of the gym equipment to burn calories of Pastries of Belem. The statue is interesting but not as impressive as others around the city.

Nice garden
Dec 2019
Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque is very close to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. It's a big garden, with a statue (Afonso de Albuquerque, Governor of Portuguese India). It's a relaxed zone, worth if you're in Belém, but that's it.

Pleasant
Oct 2019 • Couples
For a people place it is not easily accessible. You wouldn’t want to compare it with Luxembourg Gardens, still it is pleasant and visual relief. Reviewers on this site seem confused about who the statue represents as it is not named. Albuquerque, who is better remembered as a City, than a Viceroy to Goa, or DaGama who is under appreciated for his contribution to world history. There is no name plate. Can somebody make an authoritative identification

A delightful garden square!
Jun 2019
One day during our 4 day stay in Lisbon, we had caught a tram to visit the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos at Belem.
It was a hot day and after visiting the monastery and exploring much of the Belem neighbourhood and adjacent waterfront area on foot, we were hot and tired.
Fortunately, we eventually found ourselves in the Afonso de Albuquerque Square. This proved to be an ideal spot to take a much needed rest from our hectic tourist activities.
It was very pleasant sitting there on a park bench in the nice, well maintained garden surroundings while enjoying the cool afternoon river breeze and taking in the view of the impressive large commemorative statue.
If you find yourself in the vicinity and need a quiet place to enjoy a rest then this is an ideal location to do so!

Albuquerque

A place with a statue of Albuquerque together with a lion. The old minister was famous for his strength and work for Lisbon. The lion made that clear.
