About
Ecopista do Dão - A 49 km paved cycle path following the old rail road tracks from Santa Comba Dão to Viseu in central Portugal. Even if the area around it is mountainous, the cycle path itself has no big slopes and offers a relaxing cycling experience.

Amazing bike ride Ans want to go again. However the website leads me to "Booking essential and at £122 is very costly. I wish the webmaster would stop this kind of blackmail advertising. Ecopista du Deo is totally free if you have your own bike

We rented bikes from Pieter who brought them to Viseu for us. The bikes were as new and excellent quality. The ride was sensational. A fab restaurant along the way, a swim in the lake near the end of the ride ( most welcome in 34 degree heat!) and scenary of exceptional beauty.
Pieters wife then drove us back to our hotel in Viseu.
The best €25 pp value on our trip!
This will be one of the highlights on your Portugal holiday for sure!

We rode the 100 km route from our accommodation up to viseu and back, the whole path is well maintained, there's outdoor gyms on the way and a couple of cafes, not as many villages as we thought there would be though so we would recommend taking plenty of water and a snack.
There are water fountains on route but we found most weren't working and some of the toilets were locked, hence my 4 star review.

Formerly a railway line, the views by the Dao river are superb! We stopped in several villages to get a better idea of the local food and the famous Dao wine

We, two adults and two teenagers, drove to Quinta da Abelenda which is (almost) the end point of the dis-used railway line where we parked our car & met Pieter. Likely you'll need google maps to help as it is slightly out of the way. Tip: Book early for peak holiday season as all bikes were taken this day.

Bikes and payment sorted we were driven to Viseu (transfer about 40 mins) which is the start of the old railway track. We set off and after 7km we stopped for refreshments at one of the old disused rail stations, which has very clean toilets. (3 x large milky coffees, 1 x Fanta & 4 x pastries for only €7!!)

We then cycled on to the 16.5km mark and had a fantastic lunch. There is the choice between the daily fish dish or the daily meat dish served with a huge salad and lots of bread. The portions were huge and they kept offering us more and more freshly cooked sardines. Lunch for 4, which included drinks, was €32.50, unbelievable value! It was such a big & delicious lunch we hardly ate anything that evening!!

Up to this point there had been some very slight uphill sections, and I mean slight, but at about 19km we think it's pretty much all down hill until 2-3km from the end when there is again a very slight incline.

The scenery along the way is truly beautiful, we didn't realise northern Portugal was so picturesque & lush. The track is wide, very well surfaced and painted red to start with, then later green and finally blue. If the track is painted on just one side this means that section is shared with road traffic. There is a section where you will skirt around a village where there was a little more road traffic but at most we encountered 2 or 3 cars during our cycle.

Time taken. We arrived at 10:30am, set off from Viseu at 11:40 and got back to Quinta da Abelenda about 4:10pm, but this included a coffee break and a very lazy enjoyable lunch.

Overall we had a great day and would happily do it again if we returned to the area.

We had a great ride. The old railtrack is easy to follow, would be very same with children too. Most of all it is very beautifull and the birds is the only thing you hear when you have leftViseu. Also the bikes are fine and the transportation works fine. Only take good time and use your GPS, the place is a bit difficult to find.

We rented Bikes from Velo Concept in Viseu. Contact +351-232424026 or 931151416. Very helpful. Best to book day before. The Ecopista Da Dao is 18km of a longer trail that goes on for 50km. It’s on the course of an old railway and hence is relatively flat. We cycled 20km from Viseu, coming across a cafe after 7km and another cafe at 18km. Very pleasant ride, some shade from trees and railway cuttings but hot in the afternoon. Bikes were what I would call tourist bikes, 6 Gears but quite adequate for this trail.
Would recommend

An old railway line that has been given a tarmac top which is coloured depending on which region of its 30 mile length you ride along. It's superbly maintained and has stunning views along its entire length. You can join it from virtually anywhere and I recommend dropping off it at any random point and explore the neighbouring villages and cafes. It's extremely safe and is a fantastic place to ride with your children. It's quite busy at the Viseu end at the weekend as a lot of the city people start their walk from there and cyclists have to negotiate, and share with pedestrians, the many frequent 'gates' which are there to stop you riding straight across roads that cut across the ecopista. I'd advise to take plenty of water and be prepared for a fantastic time. The picture is of my bike on the ecopista on a metalled bridge.

Route with 49 km of extension, on an old railroad track. In the first 7km from Viseu crosses several villages and is very frequented by hikers. Then it is essentially frequented by cyclists. Contact with nature is premanent. The course is very beautiful, especially in the last 12 km, when it accompanies the River Dão. It has cafes of support in the kms 8, 16 and 19 from Viseu.

An amazing ride through an ever changing landscape. From the meandering river Dao to the wattle tree lined paths we made our way from one old station to others that were ruins to then be greeted by the hospitality of Farminhao cafe. I can't recommend it enough. Cold beer, comfortable surroundings & a buzz created by local men playing cards. It almost makes you forget that you're slogging away on a bike for 100k.
