We had a drink here and watched a gaggle of students do a cheer thing. The Praca is huge and open and many of the bars around have tables on the sides. The tree-lined avenue runs off down the hill to the old city.

We came here for drinks before dinner a couple of times. It is a huge open square with a lot of space. Used by student groups during the day, used for food and drink in the evening. I can be a little noisy. Go for a spot in the shade.

Praça da República is a square surrounded by bars and cafés. There are also 2 pizza restaurants and a language school. It's close to the university and Botanic Gardens and is a nice place to spend some time relaxing when exploring the city. One of the cafés has tables and chairs in the centre of the square which is nice for a panoramic view. It's very busy in the evening with university students during term time.
Some of the buildings need a lick of paint.

This square is located on the opposite side of the old city. There are numerous bars and cafes surrounding the square, most of which were frequented by the local student population. Tourists do not make it to this side of town - too bad as the square offers several nice places to relax while enjoying a snack. It is also the entranceway to the picturesque Jardim da Sereia.

This is a big open square downtown, a place you will surely pass through. Just beyond are some good places to eat and drink, and some shopping.

It is another remarkable historic place at this Portuguese city. It is recommendable to check the buildings and its urbanistic plan.

This is a great meeting point, but basically that's it as there is nothing in the Praça other than cobblestones.

If you're looking for a place to start the night, Praça da República will sure provide you with enough options, being one of the centers of the city's night life.
During the day it's a lovely place to drink something and relax, as it is quite close to almost everything a visitor should be looking for.
I'd recommend going to the close by Jardim Botânico (botanical garden) or the Jardim da Sereia (mermaid Garden) that actually got it's name from a statue of a male mermaid, a triton. What I'm sad to report is that the head of such statue has been robbed, still a lovely place.
