Coimbra is a small city on a human scale and its university a jewel, I would recommend it as a destination for anyone looking for a year of study abroad. It has a simple traveler like me, I absolutely recommend not to miss a stop of at least a couple of hours on a city tour; personally I took the basic ticket that includes library, church and Royal Palace, I was curious about the other packages... With what I have chosen you are on the safe side, three very worthy historical visits, including the library which is wonderful with its inlaid and colorful woods. Without a doubt the best activity that Coimbra offers. PS advice to book in advance and arrive on time, arriving late you would miss a piece of the route (you start from the underground prison)

The entire university and its rich history are impressive. Because neither academic work nor student learning are suitable for tourist visits, the visit is concentrated on three beautiful, important rooms of the ancient library. There are windows of opportunity, long waiting times and unjustifiably high entrance fees. It is like an act of mercy to be admitted into these rooms for exactly 10 minutes, with a strict ban on photography, even without flashes. There are no hints and explanations. If you don't take this procedure, wear it with composure. There are also magnificent libraries elsewhere, and a better presentation almost everywhere. I found the visit disappointing. Gherardino

If you are in Coimbra visiting, this is a must….it is a UNESCO site (since 2013) … it was founded by King Dinis in 1290, established in Coimbra in 1537. It is one of the oldest university in Europe and was the only one in Portuguese speaking world until 1911. Our tickets 11 euros senior rate) bought on line …gives you the visit of the Palace, the botanical gardens, the library , the Micheal chapel and the grounds…In the palace, you visit the Armory room, examination room (with pictures of kings ) , the throne room…..the faculties room, each is decorated with its colour ( yellow is for medicine) we don’t see them all…It is well done each room has information sheets in different languages….it is a steep uphill to get to it , we took a Uber which only costs 3.33 euros . Also to visit all of this , just know , there is a lot of stairs, no elevators….

Beautiful and interesting. the royal palace is nice and the chapel breathtaking. Ticket office is not so easy to find. Did not appear to have that many people visiting on the day we were there. Unfortunate that we were not able to visit the library. Although we normally book everything in advance (months and months) this was a stop on way from Lisbon to Porto. Would have had to wait over 2 hours but again we did not see many people. Strongly recommend you book those tickets in advance.

I rented a car from Porto and went on a day trip to the University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal. I arrived in the ancient city of Coimbra early in the morning, but I couldn't find a parking lot, so I was able to buy a ticket to visit the university at the earliest possible time, as the 11:00 entrance ticket was the fastest. Many parking lots were closed, so I was able to drive around the city and get a good idea of all the locations. It's a relatively small city with many slopes, so I felt that a motorcycle would be more convenient. The view of the city from the University of Coimbra at the top of the hill makes you feel like you understand why the university was founded in this small city. There are three places to see. Among them, the Joanina Library, reminiscent of the Harry Potter series, is a must-see. Although the interior is small, the ceiling is high and time flows slowly. By the way, photography is prohibited inside the library.

My wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour. Coimbra is the third-largest city in Portugal. We visited the University of Coimbra, among the oldest universities in Europe, with more than 700 years of history. Most impressive was their beautiful library. Interesting is the fact that the average yearly cost of tuition for a student at a public university is under $700 – yes, you read that right - $700, NOT $7,000 or $70,000! Grades 1-12 are compulsory. Some nice views overlooking the city.

The University of Coimbra is located at the highest point of the city. With the heat it was not easy to reach the complex. We had a timeslot and first visited the chapel and then the library. It's beautiful. Unfortunately, you can't take pictures there. The whole complex exudes grandeur and the view over the city is beautiful.

We were fortunate to take two UC tours. The botanical gardens with Tania and the University with Patricia. Both were truly outstanding. Needs to be booked ahead, click the 'guided tours' tab on the ticket page. Thank you so much.

Beautiful bookcase! Imposing and wonderful shame about the ban on taking photos. Royal Palace and the church are worth a visit. There is only some indication to reach the entry points for visits. Unfortunately you risk going back and forth several times to find the entrances.

Coimbra is a very nice Portuguese city totally worth a stop by. Very enjoyable on foot from the parks and restaurants along the river all the way up to the University. On the Main Street at river’s level enjoy typical local pastries at the outdoor traditional cafes.

This University doesn’t much care about tourists.

I arrived on a Wed. morning. Ticket office is 70m from where Google places it, across the street and diagonally; no sign marks it. There is a lovely brochure, but in Portuguese only. Ticket machine was down, thus the staff was helpless to sell me a ticket — whether for cash or credit — even when I returned 90 mins. later. Several others were turned away as well.

In the meantime I wandered around the free spaces, incld the National (Machado) Museum, which has little more than a bunch of Roman-era architectural fragments.

About half the minders at building entrances seemed annoyed that I had disturbed them by showing up. The Se Novo (New Cathedral) asked for only 1 Euro, yet was quite beautiful inside.

The original Library is the big draw, and is responsible for most of the 13.50 Euro ticket fee — the ticket I couldn’t get.

In consideration of the fact that it is located in the upper part of Coimbra, we reached the university using a public bus that goes up through the botanical garden. Arriving at the university we had to ask to reach the ticket office which we discovered to be far from the university and close to the old Chemical Laboratory at the end of Rua Estudos. Since the most famous part to visit is the Joanina Library, when you buy the ticket you also get the time at which you can access the library where the visit is guided. The visit to the university must then be defined on the basis of the time of access to the library. We first visited the Royal Palace where the Great Acts Room (former Throne Room) and the Private Exam Room are very interesting. Then through the University of Law corridors we arrived at the Capela de S. Miguel. The visit to the library starts from a side door of the Palace of Schools which is reached by going down a staircase. This guided tour begins in the not very interesting Academic Prison, then continues in the Intermediate Floor (a space which is used as a repository for less important books and documents that do not have space in the Library) and finally goes up to the Noble Floor of the Library. Here you can stop for a few minutes and you can't take pictures. The Science Museum is relatively interesting with its old science equipments. Very interesting to visit even if below expectations.

Quite an usual campus! Filled with history, Offers great views of the city from the courtyard and second floor near the kings' portrait room If you are in this region be sure to visit. Get tickets in advance online to be sure you get into see the major sites, i.e., we missed the library because it was fully booked. Parking is really challenging in all of old town so either walk or get one of the plentiful Ubers.

Lots to see around the University. You can buy a range of different tickets to go and visit the assortment of museums that are on offer. We paid €17.50 which included the scientific tour as well, these are another few museums that you can also visit.

The library is beautiful and worth paying the additional cost for, you have to book a time slot for going inside.

The University of Coimbra is a magical place full of a rich and interesting history that accompanied that of Portugal.
It is a shame that the facilities are not well maintained and the staff barely answers questions and not very willingly.
The price is excessive for what you see, especially the Royal Palace where you can see almost nothing and from afar.
The best without a doubt is the Joanina library

Rather disappointed, firstly because entry tickets are not sold at the entrance but a few streets away! Unexpected nonetheless.
Then, because the library was not accessible, we didn't come there also and above all for that!
The classrooms cannot be visited either, unlike in Evora.
The university restaurant is not worth the detour... Coffee, water, desserts, more expensive than anywhere else.
Damage !
Museum and interesting architectural ensemble of course!

Terrific site to visit with plenty of historical significance. All staff are friendly. Recommend purchasing tickets in advance. UC One “Space of Knowledge “ app recommended as audio guide is a bit clunky - play with the app before you go. Note in October 2023 work is being done at Joanina Library, the main attraction. Non-group visitors enter, as facing library facade, down the stairs on the left side. Tickets to library are timed entry for 20 minutes only, so you need to be punctual. We arrived by car and parked at Parque Verde do Mondego, which has a large parking lot. Don’t bother with Coimbra-B lot. We took an Uber from Verde to just outside of the Iron Gate of the old University complex (where the library is). The fare was EUR 5 each way. Cleary the quickest way to go of you are with a car. Otherwise guided tour might be best.

We decided not to do the timed library tour based upon reviews that said you only get about 10 minutes, it's a long line, etc. We only toured what we were allowed to see at the University, which wasn't that much. But it was still interesting. The Science Museum only took about 30 minutes, and the Academic Museum across the street from the Science Museum only took about 30 minutes. We also saw the Chapel and the Palace (not much to see). But it was fun going around the campus a little and watching/talking to some of the students. Definitely don't stay in a hotel or B&B near the University, though, since it's straight uphill and far from the train station.

Coimbra University is one of the oldest in Europe dating back to late 13 century, and still the biggest one in Portugal.
Visiting it's grounds is the best thing you can do in this town. There're several types of tickets, depending how much you want to see.
We found the basic ticket (around 12 Euros) to be more than sufficient as it includes the Chemical laboratory, University Palace (which served as seat of power in 12-13 c when Coimbra was a capital), as well the astonishing Sao Miguel Chapel and Joanina Library.
BEWARE you cannot buy tickets on the spot at the University square. Tickets for the entire University complex are sold across the Chemical Laboratory which is around the corner of the new Se Cathedral (some 10 min walk from the University square itself). Very illogical, but that's it - do that first to avoid double walking like we did. Count on around 2-3 hours for entire visit.

Currently, only Law and Administration courses are offered on this campus. Like everything in Portugal, it is a grandiose construction, which evokes all the historical weight of the age of discovery. Our visit was quick (2 hours) and we were not able to appreciate the entire university - visits to the internal areas are paid and there are scheduled times for the guides. So, for those who are interested in knowing the history and appreciating it better, I suggest dedicating more time to the visit. Some students are on the streets, dressed in gowns and selling souvenirs and can talk a little about the history and functioning of the university.
