- Jerry PWinterset, Iowa219 contributionsWhat a Treat! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the University of Coimbra. Our scheduled tour included the Library, which is amazing; and St. Michael's Chapel, which is a beautiful place. We were fortunate to be there when there were students present, who were dressed in their dark suits and dresses. It was a very unique and well worth while experience.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 1, 2023
- JLMarietta120 contributionsOkay, But Not AmazingWe decided not to do the timed library tour based upon reviews that said you only get about 10 minutes, it's a long line, etc. We only toured what we were allowed to see at the University, which wasn't that much. But it was still interesting. The Science Museum only took about 30 minutes, and the Academic Museum across the street from the Science Museum only took about 30 minutes. We also saw the Chapel and the Palace (not much to see). But it was fun going around the campus a little and watching/talking to some of the students. Definitely don't stay in a hotel or B&B near the University, though, since it's straight uphill and far from the train station.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023
- tda1986Chicago, Illinois69 contributionsNice little stopMy wife and I made a short stop in Coimbra on our way back to Lisbon from the Douro Valley. The city is cute, and the university is an obvious highlight. We didn't have time to visit the famous library (get your timed entry tickets in advance), but there are still some interesting buildings to look at, and the gift shop actually has some decent items at a reasonable price.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 16, 2023
- 14jkcPittsburgh, Pennsylvania359 contributionsso much to see and learnWe had a private tour guide who happened to be an alumnus of this university. What phenomenal history and beauty! We also walked down from the university to the main part of town and learned more along the way. I wish we had spent a night or two here instead of just a few hours.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- Skier9175Pembroke, Massachusetts471 contributionsI am very glad we did this!We had a local tour guide take use through the campus. He was a former student and very humorous. The library alone is worth the visit. It was visually sensational. The overall visit was informative and interesting. This probably isn’t good for young children but highly recommended for adultsVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 14, 2024
- RhinoSaint Julian's, Malta3 contributionsA must pit stop.Coimbra is a very nice Portuguese city totally worth a stop by. Very enjoyable on foot from the parks and restaurants along the river all the way up to the University. On the Main Street at river’s level enjoy typical local pastries at the outdoor traditional cafes.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 18, 2024
- TammyLebQuebec City, Canada56 contributionsBeautiful ChapelBeautiful and interesting. the royal palace is nice and the chapel breathtaking. Ticket office is not so easy to find. Did not appear to have that many people visiting on the day we were there. Unfortunate that we were not able to visit the library. Although we normally book everything in advance (months and months) this was a stop on way from Lisbon to Porto. Would have had to wait over 2 hours but again we did not see many people. Strongly recommend you book those tickets in advance.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 5, 2024
- Dragon789wvThousand Oaks, California2,267 contributionsVery impressiveMy wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour. Coimbra is the third-largest city in Portugal. We visited the University of Coimbra, among the oldest universities in Europe, with more than 700 years of history. Most impressive was their beautiful library. Interesting is the fact that the average yearly cost of tuition for a student at a public university is under $700 – yes, you read that right - $700, NOT $7,000 or $70,000! Grades 1-12 are compulsory. Some nice views overlooking the city.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 30, 2024
- Laura L12 contributionsOutstanding, wish I could give more stars. We were fortunate to take two UC tours. The botanical gardens with Tania and the University with Patricia. Both were truly outstanding. Needs to be booked ahead, click the 'guided tours' tab on the ticket page. Thank you so much.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 13, 2024

We dragged our bags a short way from the Coimbra Train station to our Air B&B. It was at the end of a bit of a tourist strip. The efficient Ms Chatter had booked us into a guided tour of the University at 4:30pm. A bit of a steep climb up the hill and we were there in twenty minutes. At 15€ it was well worth it and it departed from the main courtyard. Went to three locations but the gem is the Library. Due to the huge number of Waddles on Tour that flow through daily we were limited to just twenty minutes. About 5,000 books up to the ceiling and a very impressive interior. We’d looked at a few rooms prior and one with all the chancellors peering down at you was damming evidence that most academics are pretty dull characters. The ceiling was interesting. It was badly done. I’d say Pedro the Brush may have been a bit drunk when restoring it. www.portugalinamonth is a great help

Coimbra University is one of the oldest in Europe dating back to late 13 century, and still the biggest one in Portugal.
Visiting it's grounds is the best thing you can do in this town. There're several types of tickets, depending how much you want to see.
We found the basic ticket (around 12 Euros) to be more than sufficient as it includes the Chemical laboratory, University Palace (which served as seat of power in 12-13 c when Coimbra was a capital), as well the astonishing Sao Miguel Chapel and Joanina Library.
BEWARE you cannot buy tickets on the spot at the University square. Tickets for the entire University complex are sold across the Chemical Laboratory which is around the corner of the new Se Cathedral (some 10 min walk from the University square itself). Very illogical, but that's it - do that first to avoid double walking like we did. Count on around 2-3 hours for entire visit.

Quite an usual campus! Filled with history, Offers great views of the city from the courtyard and second floor near the kings' portrait room If you are in this region be sure to visit. Get tickets in advance online to be sure you get into see the major sites, i.e., we missed the library because it was fully booked. Parking is really challenging in all of old town so either walk or get one of the plentiful Ubers.

Not well organised from the beginning you need to walk 500 meters from the University entrance to find the ticket office. Ticket is 12.5 euros, not cheap at all for Portugal standards. The Chapel is outstanding but the staff is pushing you to leave as soon as possible to let other people enter. You won't spend more than 5 minutes inside. There's not much to see at the library. The Royal Palace is not really I te resting either. The tower is under repair and can't be visited while the science museum is only open during weekends. So basically you get an expensive tickets but half of the sites can't be visited.

Lots to see around the University. You can buy a range of different tickets to go and visit the assortment of museums that are on offer. We paid €17.50 which included the scientific tour as well, these are another few museums that you can also visit.
The library is beautiful and worth paying the additional cost for, you have to book a time slot for going inside.

Almost like in every city in Portugal the streets are steep. A pleasant university city, we arrived on the opening day of the studies, the atmosphere of the "old" students (second year and above) marching the young students in the first year plus a beautiful library, a beautiful view of the city from the university area. The mobility in the city is incredibly easy with the help of the relatively cheap Uber service.

This University doesn’t much care about tourists.
I arrived on a Wed. morning. Ticket office is 70m from where Google places it, across the street and diagonally; no sign marks it. There is a lovely brochure, but in Portuguese only. Ticket machine was down, thus the staff was helpless to sell me a ticket — whether for cash or credit — even when I returned 90 mins. later. Several others were turned away as well.
In the meantime I wandered around the free spaces, incld the National (Machado) Museum, which has little more than a bunch of Roman-era architectural fragments.
About half the minders at building entrances seemed annoyed that I had disturbed them by showing up. The Se Novo (New Cathedral) asked for only 1 Euro, yet was quite beautiful inside.
The original Library is the big draw, and is responsible for most of the 13.50 Euro ticket fee — the ticket I couldn’t get.

The square and university buildings are nice from the outside but to go in is very expensive for what you actually get. The ticket office is located a long way from the actual university. If you go inside there are only 2 or 3 rooms in the royal palace you see, very disappointing. The library is good, but you only get 10 mins and it's rammed full of people and you can't take photos.

Very much torn between a 4 and a 5 for this place. The library, grand hall and chapel are beautiful; the cabinet of curiosities/science museum were quite dated and plain. We spent about 2 hours here in total; you can very much spend more time roaming around if you want to read/go through everything in the science museum. Note that NO photos are allowed in the library, which is frustrating. The grand hall has plenty of information in English and you can go at your leisure to all the buildings, except the library.

Terrific site to visit with plenty of historical significance. All staff are friendly. Recommend purchasing tickets in advance. UC One “Space of Knowledge “ app recommended as audio guide is a bit clunky - play with the app before you go. Note in October 2023 work is being done at Joanina Library, the main attraction. Non-group visitors enter, as facing library facade, down the stairs on the left side. Tickets to library are timed entry for 20 minutes only, so you need to be punctual. We arrived by car and parked at Parque Verde do Mondego, which has a large parking lot. Don’t bother with Coimbra-B lot. We took an Uber from Verde to just outside of the Iron Gate of the old University complex (where the library is). The fare was EUR 5 each way. Cleary the quickest way to go of you are with a car. Otherwise guided tour might be best.

It is considered a "must see" when you go to Coimbra. The visit does not take that long. I would allow 1-1.5 hrs there. Is there any other places you would like to visit while you there? It was all we did. Old town is always good to stroll through as well.
