The Church of Sao Tiago is a Romanesque building from the end of the 12th century. This temple was consecrated in 1206 . Over the centuries, it underwent several transformations that completely changed its aspect. The church a good example of the Romanesque style of the time. The altar in the presbytery is decorated in the Rococo style with high-quality carved and gilded wood and marble effects. The facades outside the church are the best examples of Coimbra's Romanesque style. Very well conserved and quite unique.

the Commerce Square begins and ends with a very old church to each point
one of those two is Saint Tiago church, which has been built in 12th century, with some similarities with Se Velha (the main entrance)
the interior is sober and quiet; the wood make the place warmer
for me it was interesting to find an orthodox icon in that church, an usual presence in Portugal
Romanesques style church, very well preserved despite of those 8 centuries of history

At the end of the “Praça de commercio” you will see a staircase who leads to the entree of the Igrejia Santiago.
This Church is very small and most of the time closed, I had the opportunity to see it on the inside when there took place an exhibition on the inside, and this is already several years ago.
But as you are on the place, it is nice to know what is there.
From here you are only about 300 meters away from the underground parking when you like to leave. On the other hand you still can enjoy to have a walk into the small streets of the historical part, do not be afraid you will not get lost.

Very nice façade and very nice romanesque details in the building. It is in the middle of the city so it is easy to visit

If you are Catholic this is a refuge if you are looking for a quiet place in your holiday to meditate and spend some time with the Lord. They have exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament everyday, and the entrance to this church is on the side door beside the steps leading up to the pedestrian mall. We would have missed it were it not pointed out by a nearby restaurant server. Highly recommended!!

I never feel I should have to pay to enter a church. We could find no one that knew anything about a mass schedule or if they even do mass in this church. Very disappointed.

this is a small old church in the centre of coimbra.
to enter the church you will have to go through a door on the side, close to the stairs as the main door is closed.
it does not have much inside that will wow you but again not all churchs can have gold and statues.
it is worth a quick visit.

Two friends and I visited the Igreja Santiago during our stay in Coimbra in October. At first we thought it was closed but then discovered that the entrance on the side was open. The church is small but very historic and in a location that made it a nice stop while enjoying the city. Definitely worth a few minutes of your time if your are in the area!

It is on the other side of Mondego river, near the botanic garden. A very interesting contruction that started in the 1500 and is well maintained with a small museum.
