This is one of the unofficial entrances to Coimbra's Old City. This spacious plaza/square houses the Camara Municipal, Igreja de Santa Cruz and the adjacent Café Santa Cruz as well as several antique buildings. There is a pleasant fountain and several concrete benches which are great to sit at and watch locals and tourists go by. There are several cafes... More

A beautiful edifice only leads to a stunning church within. I was particularly impressed by the organ for its colour and grandeur. The tiling on the walls as you enter describes tales of faith and praise. The one thing the tourists are reluctant to observe are moments of quiet contemplation whilst sitting in the pews, you must try this.

A good square that leads to the Town Hall, the lovely Sta Cruz church, the art deco Café de Sta Cruz and multiple small streets that constitute "a baixa", the lower part of town.

A sweet little but very beautiful square in Coimbra. The architecture is very pretty and you should see it if you can. Up a little hill you are able to walk to the shopping street and you might even find little windy side streets with even smaller and sweeter little stores that are so typical for old cities. I just... More

To start this visit when arriving by car in Coimbra, is to let the car into the underground parking in the Avenida Fernão Magelhaes, enter this avenue drive until the end, turn to the right and follow, turn left and on the traffic lights turn again left, and so you are in the good direction to enter the underground. Stunning, this is the first word that comes to my mind thinking about Praca Oito de Mayo, a beautiful setting nestled in the historic center, truly enviable. This square is full of historical buildings, one of the most crowded places of the city and well worth a visit. Coimbra is not very big and walking through the streets of the... More
