This is certainly the most beautiful square in compact town of Coimbra.
It is set at the end of the central pedestrian street. Around the square are notable buildings - the amazing Santa Cruz Church and Monastery, Coimbra town hall and old historic residential buildings.

This is a very busy pedestrian plaza with cafes, the entrance to the Santa Cruz church, and the city hall. Lots of activity all around and the starting point for the long walk dawn the shopping street.

The most emblematic and important square of Coimbra. It is of course a "must" if you visit the city of Coimbra.

The name of the square comes from the episode that happened on May 8, 1834 in Coimbra, when the liberal troops took the city from the monarchist's control. There are many buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. There is also the Igreja de Santa Cruz on the square and the town hall . There are also many nice restaurants and shops around the square. The square is located between the two main streets in Coimbra: Rua da Sofia and Visconde da Luz. Both are also full of souvenir shops, other interesting stores, and bakeries and Portuguese restaurants. The second one is for pedestrians only and is a very pleasant place to walk. It leads to Largo da Portagem, another very beautiful place in Coimbra. It's a very nice place to visit.

May 8 Square is named after the day in 1834 when liberal troops overthrew the monarchical power. There are two attractions on the square: the Church of Santa Cruz and the cafe of the same name to the right of it. Both are worth visiting. First of all, for the sake of the interior, both of them. There`s also City hall (left), but it is not so interesting.

This square is one of the oldest in Coimbra but - unfortunately - it has nothing special to offer. The sculptures that you think you can see in the photograoh are so seriously eroded as not to be worth a photograph. Disappointing.

Marvellous example of a Portuguese church. Beautiful tiles. The square has a fountain and it worth visiting the cafe next to the church. Peak inside to see if their is tradition entertainment going on.
