As nice as the University area was, my favourite part of Coimbra was this park by the river. You get views of the old town, wildlife, fresh air and an absolutely brilliant pedestrian bridge!

We headed down to the riverfront to eat at one of the four restaurants listed in the guide and were disappointed to find them all closed and looking dishevelled. We did not realise they had been flooded. What. Shame. It is such a beautiful location with lovely views across the river and up and down the park. Still worth a walk.

This park is in desperate need of uplift and maintenance. The Mondego river crests havoc at time, but it is no excuse for leaving it in the state it is.

We took a stroll on Christmas day and walked through this park. They had just had some terrible storms and flooding, so we saw some of the effects of that. But still a beautiful place to take a walk.

Parque Verde (Green Park) is located on the banks of the River Mondego. It has recently been extended, taking land from a large orange grove at its southern end. There are a small number of play activities for children and often it is possible to hire small cars for them to drive along the pathway. There is a giant bear, which in the path had been a large bear shaped from a bush, but as the bush died it has been covered in astro turf. It is most busy on a Sunday afternoon when locals go there for an afternoon activity.
If you cross the bridge and turn to the left there is a large children's play area.
In the past there had been a pub, café, ice cream parlour and restaurants in the park, but they were flooded 2 years ago and now the buildings are empty. A shame as they had been very popular.

go to the park, bring your food and have a lovely picnic. Enough shelter under trees and the mondego is safe to swim.In summer here are inflatable castles for kids (you need to pay a euro or so) and you can rent a canoe or learn to Sub ("canoe on surfboard")

How is it possible that people are allowed to build cafes, restaurants, etc so close to the river? The recent heavy rains caused disasterous amounts of damage in and around the river banks.

Coimbra has this wonderful tree park right by the side of the River Mondego, and most importantly as you drive in from the east there is a HUGE cheap car park right by it. I cannot think of any other city in Europe where you can park so close to the centre for hours for just 2 or 3 euros !
It's worth parking here all day to see the Ponte Da Inez footbridge, cafe area, and then exploring Coimbra on foot.

Wonderful park in both margins of the river Mondego. South margin is best for sunbathing, water sports, including kayaks and stand-up paddle for rent and the water is perfectly safe for a bath. There is a pedestrian bridge linking the river margins.

We walked along this pretty path after touring around the city. It is a pleasant place to stroll along the river and there was a restaurant that looked like it might be a nice place to relax and grab a little bite to eat. They appear to be working on the park, perhaps fixing it up a bit as there was apparently bad river flooding in 2016 that destroyed much it.

Is it easy to park near Parque Verde do Mondego : Avenida da Lousa - Parque Verde, Coimbra,Portugal? Is there free parking?
Written June 25, 2015
Yes it is very easy to park there, and it is free, coming from the center of Coimbra, drive into the direction of Lisbon by the N1 (national road) and when you arrive on the big roundabout where you will see the café/restaurant Praxis, make almost a complete turn and so you will enter on the parking spot of the green park.
Hope this was helpfull to you.
Hans & Lucy.
