Coimbra's Historical Highlights Tour

rm when it’s time to say goodbye”!

While Coimbra has only been classified as World Heritage in 2013, when both its monuments as well as traditions have been recognized by UNESCO (a specialized agency of the UN for Education, Science and Culture), it's safe to say that this city – also known as the “City of Knowledge” - holds unexpected surprises at each corner either by the unique beauty of its historical buildings or even the singular aura lend by a student life filled with centuries of tradition!

During this walking tour through the Historical Center of Coimbra we will discover the different reasons that allowed for such classification, going from the Downtown to the Uptown while we unveil its importance in the History of Portugal and the material and immaterial values within the classified perimeter. This visit, conducted by residents of Coimbra and former students of the oldest institution in the Country – the University – will make you fall in love for this city!

Jewish History of Coimbra Tour

This is an exclusive of ours, product of continuous research of our guides and city archaeologists through the years!

During this guided tour we will walk you through the memories of Jewish Coimbra.

The first signs of the Jewish presence in Coimbra date back to the 10th Century, signaled by the transaction of land properties in a nearby village. We know that later, during the rule of D. Afonso Henriques, some guarantees and lands were granted to this community, which expanded through all the Portuguese territory up to the 16th century.

More than just buildings or material testimonies of the Jewish presence, this is a tour about the rich history and culture of this community.

Conímbriga Roman Ruins & Museum Halfday Tour

The location site of Conímbriga was populated by the romans around 139 B.C., in a region that contained previous signs of prehistoric occupation, establishing the prosperous capital of Lusitânia. During the rule of Emperor Augusto, Conímbriga grew into a more urban scale including an amphitheater, thermal baths and Roman Forum. Though the most impressive remains of that period are the domus – manor houses – and the insulae. These structures are so well preserved that you will feel like travelling back in time!

We will visit the locations of the old town of Conímbriga while learning about the daily livings during that period and understand the strategic location on the territory that later would become Portugal. At the monographic museum we will admire the objects that were used by the people on their daily tasks!

Aveiro, Barra and Costa Nova Fullday Tour

Located at the center of Portugal, just 40 minutes away from Coimbra, is the city of Aveiro. This place contains an unique atmosphere given by its typical boats (Moliceiros), which are often compared to the Venetian Gondolas, as well as its 20th Century architecture, in the style of Art Noveau, connected by cobbled passages that extend along the water channel coming from the Lagoon.
This is the place where you will be given free time for lunch (we have some good suggestions for you even if you are vegan!) and shopping (consciously!).
After lunch we'll depart to visit the Lagoon of Aveiro with it's Salt Ponds... and we'll also visit the famous places of Barra and Costa Nova!

Fabiana gave us a tour around the main parts of the Baixa and Alta (except the cathedrals), and taught us many facts about the city of Coimbra that we didn't know, especially student and university related. We missed a bit more depth of the historical facts and general city history, and also felt the 2h guide could be more structured (I think we could have gone through the same amount of info in 30 minutes less). If they improve the historical depth of the tour, I would definitely increase the rating, as Fabiana was super friendly and nice, and it was great visiting the city with her.

Hello! I am very sorry that you felt our Historical Highlights Tour doesn't have enough historical information, as we've built the route with details from the Roman times, through the Islamic Occupation of the Territory, the Reconquest and the First Kings Presence here, and the University History with the Unesco Classified Area and the Intangible Heritage. Fabiana has communicated that the tour happened normally, so we're caught by surprise and very sad with this rating. I am very sorry and hopefully next time we can prove to you our route is complete enough: please ask questions if and when you have them! We always answer. Best regards, Sara Cruz Founder, Manager & Tour Guide

Fabiana took me in a tour of the Centre of Coimbra up to the University which we visited along with the amazing library. She gave me lots of information about the history of Portugal, the places we visited and stories about the students at the University of Coimbra. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and recommend it.

Enjoyed a truly great city walk with Sara during a hot day in Coimbra. She’s very knowledgeable and we learned a lot about this historic city. She also took the time to send us some info after the tour which we appreciated. Highly recommended.

We had less than a full day to visit Coimbra, and we wanted to make the most of it. We booked a three-hour walk through GoWalksPortugal, and we are very glad we did. As has been noted in other reviews Fabiana is a wonderful guide; beyond being personable and knowledgeable, she showed us sights that we would either not have come across or wouldn’t know their significance if we did. We asked her to take us up the hill to the university on a route that was less direct and not as strenuous, and she did so. She also knew where we could find a clean, public WC -- not always easy for an unfamiliar visitor. The highlight of the tour, of course, was the university's library, where Fabaiana already had timed tickets ready. Beyond the tour itself, I must commend GoWalksPortugal for its customer service. We were forced to make some last-minute changes to our itinerary, and they were very prompt and gracious in rearranging our planned tour. This was in early March and might be more problematic in busier tourism seasons, but I believe it speaks to the manner in which this service is run. Highly recommended.
