The arch marks the entrance to the old town and is a remnant of the old walls. There's a steep slope up to it and an even steeper slope beyond it leading ever upwards. The stone road is very slippery when wet so wear shoes or sandals with a good grip. We were in Coimbra in the cool of February; I would imagine walking up here in the summer heat would be truly exhausting. The tower by the arch has a small museum.

Porta and Torre de Almedina is the main access to the historic city of Coimbra. The tower, one of the most imposing of the walls, ensured the defense of this narrow access. This gate is sometimes confused with the Porta da Barbacã, which is instead part of a second wall built to improve the defendability of the city.

A spectacular journey through time! In just a few minutes we learn about the story of Coimbra and how the Kingdom of Portugal truly began here. A model in several languages with multimedia interaction and visualization of the wall on a giant screen. Very good.

We didn’t expect much but the interactive display and physical model are excellent, offering a comprehensive overview of the history of Coimbra. Excellent views too from the top floor. Don’t let the low price fool you!

Torre de Almedina is the only left town gate out of three from the medieval era.
You're sure to pass it when going to/from the University square. It's an arched gate set between houses on an extremely steep street - just a pass by attraction.

This massive and tall tower, part of the fortified wall, marks the boundary between the narrow streets winding up the steep hillside of historical Coimbra and the downtown with beautiful XIX. century houses. Its name - Almedina - evokes the Moorish period of Portuguese history.
In front of the gate there is a sculpture, a poetic tribute to the Portuguese fado guitar - shaped like a woman.

Due to lack of signage, 99.9 % miss this treat... An interactive museum in the moorishly square citadel tower adjacent, behind and above the arch. There is an excellent model of the citadel's entire circumference with a lighted keyboard to explain each important location on it in choice of 4 languages. To find it, go through the arch on the upward route and walk left and then around to find a metal gate into a small open area. The red, municipal sign and the stairs will then be seen. If it is during the proper hours of opening but the door is locked... Just knock loudly! The older fellow minding the museum is a bit odd but gentle... He will come and open the door. On the floor above the interactive map is a display of historical bridges that crossed the river prior to current one. Also, the interesting architecture, it's balconies, windows and "dog killer" openings... covered by transparent see-through lucite.

Also known as Arco de Almedina, this is the original main gate in the medieval defensive wall that once ran around the base of the hilltop part of the city. There are several souvenir shops and quaint cafes located within steps of the arch. Great photo opportunities here - if you can wait for the crowds to disperse.

Arco de Almedina is the only surviving gate of the three that led to the citadel, rebuilt in the XI century by the famous Arab commander Al-Mansur. The tower was first used as a Town Hall, then the Town Hall moved to the monastery of Santa Cruz and the municipal archive was here. Rue de Kebra Costas, which leads through the arch to the old cathedral in translation means unbearable street. It was really not easy to pull the goods from the Marketplace up the hill over the slick, polished cobblestones.

Is it easy to park outside the city close to the centre? Is there free parking? Kindly provide direction for parking in Coimbra.
Written June 25, 2015
It is hard to find free parking sites close to Coimbra's city centre. However the parking prices are acceptable and to park near Ponte de Santa Clara seems to be the best solution to visit Coimbra's centre.
