This was a unique stop along our route from Lisbon to Porto. It's a quant little town, nice to walk along the water and watch the boats go by. There are lots of cafes and restaurants to enjoy. I am glad we stopped and spent a few hours as it was beautiful and different.

I have to admit that I have been there couple of years ago and I did not find it nice. Last October I came again and loved it very much. We walked near the water, in the small old section and we took a boat ride and it was lovely. There are some fascinating building in the center and the views from the boat are amazing

We stopped for lunch but it was too crowded. Walked around fir 30 minutes and left. It was worth seeing since it has been well maintained.

In general, there isn't much to see in Aveiro. The canals are nice and water seems to be more or less clean. We saw a lot of fishes.

I grew up hearing about the "Ría de Aveiro", in the small town of Aveiro, commonly known as the little "Portuguese Venice". Along the Atlantic Coast, the "Ría de Aveiro" - a lagoon and a few shallow canals - runs for 45 kms in lenght, with a width, at its largest point, of 11 kms. The lagoon was formed, in the 16th century, as a result of a sea retreat and, some time later, by the construction of coastal cords which originated the lagoon. The best way to visit the "Ría de Aveiro" is taking a tour, on one of the many traditional boats - the "Moliceiros". These boats were originally conceived for the collection and transport of the "moliço", an acquatic plant used as a fertilizer. They are painted with bright colors and decorated with unique motifs. Ancient salinas, along the lagoon, used to produce "Flor de Sal", a quite expensive and disputed salt variety. Evidently, Venice is too far away, but Aveiro is a magic romantic town and deserves a visit by all those traveling in Northern Portugal! Enjoy!

Stopped here for lunch after touring Conimbraga Roman ruins and took a gondola ride on the grand canal. Very colorful and lively area bordering the canal with numerous restaurants and shops. A great way stop on the way to Porto.

The place is located just 1.30 h from Porto by train. It is worth to visit for a day trip or just the afternoon. The houses look so authentic and it is very pleasant to walk around the neighborhood.

There is no doubt why they call it "Little Venice". Simply amazing and colourful. They also have nice parking places all over the city and amazing cheap restaurants with fresh fish. Soups of the day and nice desserts. Also if you like the beach there are some of them not far away from here.

Set your expectations right, this is not Venice (it’s way too small for that)! But the canals of the Ria definitely make the town distinctive and unique.
Aveiro it’s a very small town, and the best way to understand the town is to take the Molicero tour (the boat tour). The ride takes around 45 minutes for a roundtrip of the town (for 13 euros) and it comes with an entertaining and interesting tour. The guides are great, knowledgeable and multilingual.
If you’re planning to stay in Aveiro for a couple of days it should be the first thing to do. It would give you a good overview of the town. After the boat ride, explore more of the river on foot and at your leisure.
A must do in Aveiro!
