An immense beauty with history
The station building consists of three sectors
a central one, with three floors, featuring three large doors at the level of the lower level;
two symmetrical sides, with two floors, with a door and two rectangular shutters.
But, more than the architecture, it is the tiles that make the building notable, a rich collection of tile panels that cover the walls of its facades.
Through the main cultural monuments of the region and the country to everyone who passed by. Among the main panels, we find essentially ethnographic and monumental motifs, such as: figures, work and landscapes typically characteristic of the region; the city's weapons; illustrious figures who contributed to the construction of the railway line, regional and national monuments.

The train station’s azulejos have been painstakingly restored and the building radiates, especially when the sun is out. The azulejos themselves are beautiful and tell some of the history of Aveiro. As far as I could tell, you cannot enter the building. The functioning train station is a modern structure and quite a stark contrast. A bit outside the center, I paid 3.90 euros for the ride.

Aveiro railway station is very small. However, while driving around the town we stopped by it, as the beautiful facade caught our eye.
Very nice composition of Portugal's blue-white Azulejos tiles adorn the main building.

The “Old Railway Station”, of Aveiro a true ex-libris of the city, is located at one of the main entry points into the city in a building embellished by 59 tile panels that decorate both facades, depicting professions, local figures and landscapes of the city, region and country.
On the inside it is a shop where you are able to buy local products made in the city, the nicest is the outside façade with the blue and white tiles. Worth a stop-over.

Old railway station with lots of character & nicely renovated. Quite functional.
The tourist board said that this place was the Venice of Portugal- not so sure really but certainly a tourist trap. Nothing that exciting to see. Portugal has many natural sights & experiences to see.
15-20 min walk to the centre- buses & taxis.

Okay so first thing to note is that this is no longer in use, you arrive in the ultra modern and much bigger new station which is immediately next door.
However, if you come out the correct exit, ie if you are heading down to the centre and the canals, this beautiful old station is on your tight as you leave.
Gorgeous Azulejo tiled facade. Currently has work going on there so your view is a little obscured, but hopefully it will be finished soon and available to perhaps visit again?

Positive surprise when getting out of the train in Aveiro, very beautiful building with blue tiles. I recommend taking some photos. But it is small, you need 2 minutes. Around 20 minute walk to the historical center.

While the old station is beautiful building and well worth a 5 star. It had the most beautiful tiles and been wonderfully restored .
However the new station is not great , especially the male staff. Rude and very ignorant and unhelpful.

We were staying for a week in Porto but it was always our intention to visit a couple of other towns while in the area. We decided upon Guimaraes and Aveiro, particularly because of the ease in getting to them by the efficient and inexpensive rail network radiating out from Porto. I think that the train to Aveiro took about an hour and it was great to look out of the window and see the countryside.
On arriving in Aveiro and leaving the train the first building we came across was the utterly beautiful old railway station building adorned in many places with blue and white tiles forming pictues of the area and life there in past days.
It is surely well worth visiting Aveiro just to see this building.

I am also wondering if there is an update to this answer about a place to store our luggage for a few hours while we tour Aveiro. Wanting to travel from Porto - to Aveiro (look around for a few hours) then on to Coimbra, but would like to do Aveiro without the luggage.
