Well worth the visit if you enjoy history.
Take the personal tour!!
It’s 2 euros to go in on your own, 3 euros with personal tour.
The guide was very knowledgeable and spoke fluent English.
After the tour you have the option of spending time in the private garden which is adjacent to but separate from larger city garden.
Overall a very inexpensive experience.

Entry fee required, with or without guide. Walking through rooms that History left with paintings of Kings Queens family fueds and international events. Past and now all become history. Don't miss the majestic Pine tree in the garden. It stands for centuries, I am so insignificant. History is life.

This was the captain Generals palace and is home to the Governor when he is in residence. Once housed King Pedro the 4th. when Angra Do Heroismo was the capital of Portugal one out of two times. Much great local history.

Beautiful building with a lovely garden, but I'd really recommend going for the tour - it only costs €1 more than the entry fee, and for that you get a friendly, informative personal tour round the palace’s first floor and find out a lot about the history of the building, Angra and the Azores in general. It’s something of a hidden gem and one of our favourite activities we did in the beautiful city of Angra.

This building and architecture is representative of traditional buildings that were built for aristocracy and the ruling classes. Beautiful photos and also interesting local history.

We took a personal tour of the place. IMPRESSIVE!! Royal portraits & all the ornate intricately hand carved furniture. Definitely worth the couple of Euros/person price. Also checkout the free botanic gardens next door. Gorgeous trees and foliage.

Our main two days in Terceira were Sunday and Monday. Poor planning as most sites are closed on these two days, including the famous caves. The palace is pretty from the exterior. Renovations were occurring on the attached chapel.

This restored palace is centrally located – only a 3 minute walk from the Town Hall or the Praca Velha (Main Square) in Angra. It was damaged in the 1980 earthquake but we couldn’t tell that by looking at it.

If you're a history buff, this is worth checking out. For one additional Euro ($3 Euro instead of $2 Euro), a tour guide takes you around and explains the history of the building and the role it played in Terceira's history. There is nothing posted in English, so this is very helpful. Moreover, we found our guide sweet, charming and occasionally funny.
