I stopped here hoping to visit the museum on my own. They said that self-guided visits aren’t permitted and you could only see via a tour. The next English tour was 30 minutes later so I skipped it.

Not sure if this review is appropriate since I didn’t see the museum but I had not seen anything online that a tour was mandatory.

For 3 Euros we had an English speaking guide. Well worth it. She told us all about the history of the island and the government. Tour took less than 1 hour.

We went with a guide, Marina. She knew so much of the history of the paintings and pieces in the palace.

My husband and I wandered in and they asked 3Euro per person for a guided tour; I wasn't too enthused because we had done most other things self-guided, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We had a private tour and learned more about the history of Terceira in that hour than the rest of the week. I believe our guide was named Felipa, she was lovely and took time to answer questions, told us stories about kings, the pursuit of liberty, and Terceira prominent place in the history of Portugal (and Brazil). Not something I sought out, but definitely worth the detour and I'd highly recommend the tour. NOTE: Photos are not allowed inside along the tour.

In a rainy day we went in more by accident than choice, we were glad it rained so we visited this interesting place. It was at one time a palace, then also a Jesuit school. The building in itself is well kept and now the residence of the President of Azores and government offices. For security reasons the tour is guided, this is a plus since the guide we had, Andrea, not just explained about the rooms you visit, including the church next door, but she also informed us about the history of Angra, and the form of government in the Azores. Having a professional guide in the tour added a lot to the visit, she spoke Portuguese, Spanish and English. The only problem I could see in this visit it did not appear it was wheelchair accessible.

If you're a history buff, this is worth checking out. For one additional Euro ($3 Euro instead of $2 Euro), a tour guide takes you around and explains the history of the building and the role it played in Terceira's history. There is nothing posted in English, so this is very helpful. Moreover, we found our guide sweet, charming and occasionally funny.

This is nice Palace in the centre of Angra do Heroismo. It was closed so we only have seen the outside.

While it is not as ornate as one might expect, it is still attractive. The rooms are used by the Azorean government, so it is a bit more functional rather than decorative. Nonetheless, there is a good collection of decorative arts including many portraits of historical figures. The guided tour by Filippa was very informative.

Delightful, low key. Excellent guided tour with Felipa. Check hours - it was closed on Monday, but open Saturday afternoon.

Definitely take the guided tour. Our guide was excellent and brought to life the history which we had learned at the Museu do Angra earlier in the day. The entrance is around the side street, as the main entrance is only for the VP's office and residence. Also enjoy the private garden after the tour.
