About
Angra has had three city halls. The first city hall had a small square in front. Later, the trade from India and the importance of the city led to the construction of a larger square and a new building with lateral staircases, a portico with columns, and a bell tower. The existing city hall was built in the nineteenth century and was inspired by the Oporto's old City Hall. It has one of the largest and grandiose great halls in the country.

Nice island to visit, perfect for nature lovers and full of tracks for hicking. Nice views and a lot geological interpretation centers. In this island you can do some exclusive walks like, inside a vulcano chimney and a lava tube!

Followed a parade of Santa’s, wisemen and nativity characters down the towns Main Street to the town square where the town hall sits at one end. The square was bordered with wooden booths for the sale of local fare and baked goods for various civic organizations. The parade took place with children from the local elementary schools and the booths opened mostly at night for the holiday season, however some were open during the day. Items for sale were home made from local kitchens to support various youth organizations. Everything was delicious and at a good value. People were warm and friendly and happy to see tourists spending their holiday on the lovely decorated cobble stone streets and shops of downtown. A joyful time sharing the old world charm of Angra and the traditions of Portugal at Christmas. A warm and pleasant surprise on our very first day. Clearly a prelude to a fun filled vacation in a beautiful locale. We visited on 12/7/17.

Easy enough to step in for a look around while you are downtown. I think it's basically open during the work week, and you just step inside and ask the receptionist if you can look around, and she waves you in. We went upstairs and saw some impressive and European-looking rooms where presumably they hold city council meetings and court. If there was an English explanation posted for any of this, I did not see it.

This city center is unique in the Azores and probably in the entire of Portugal. Perfectly maintained and painted ancient houses, beautiful churches, a true festival for the eyes. No wonder it is listed as one of the top places to visit in the Azores and recognized as a UNESCO world heritage.
One more thing that is not listed in all these travel guides: local car drivers are extremely attentive and respectful of all the pedestrian guests in their city.

The town hall is definitely worth a visit during your stay in Terceira. A half hour is more than enough to see the 2 floors of the building, and it offers some history of the island. It borders one side of Praca de Velha and is in the center of Angra.

As we entered the building, we were greeted by the receptionist who invited us to venture further and go upstairs to explore. Immediately all lighting was switched on so that we could admire all the noble áreas, chandeliers and furnishings. Beautiful decor everywhere, that is so evidently a proud heritage for the town, was made completely open to us.

Very interesting inside this Town Hall that contains most of its original furniture floors, and stained glass windows from when it was used as the Court House and Jail. The Court House/Room portion of the Town Hall, located on the second floor, has a beautifully carved wooden bench for the Judge(s) .The other room located on the second floor across from the Court Room is still used as a meeting place for Dignitaries and special events. This room has walls that are covered with beautiful golden fabric and houses the original Terceira flag. If you are into architecture, then this is definitely worth a visit.

Many rooms are open for viewing and if you go with a guide the history is very interesting. Many artifacts of past, present and future.

This was right in front of our hotel, so might as well peak in. It was all decorated for Christmas and looked beautiful. There was no charge to go inside and look around.
