It is the PRC01 TER. It is a 5 km route, of medium difficulty, especially if it has rained recently because there are areas that become puddled and slippery. Duration is between 2 hours and 2 and a half hours depending on what stops. It is one of the most famous because you can take advantage of the route to visit the Gruta do Natal since it begins at its parking lot. On the days when the Grotto is open, the route is more crowded for this reason (something to keep in mind). At the beginning of the route you see A Lagoinha do Vale Fundo, which is a small lagoon in the middle of the forest. If it is foggy, the route is not worth it because ahead there are a couple of viewpoints and you can't see anything. In addition, the ground is more humid and puddles form easily. The route is mostly through forests or bushes, but at the end there is a one-km stretch and a little bit of road. There are some climbing sections between rocks that can be the most technically difficult.

One of the best trekking done in the Azores: they give it as difficult, but only because you have to help in several places (the part in the middle of the lava rocks) with your hands to jump and climb over large stones. But you succeed well, you help with branches of trees and bushes that never fail, even boys can do it (maybe children better not). Path that varies a lot, the first part for me was the most beautiful, the one with water, then obviously the crossing of the lava flow was not bad. We did it with full visibility and fairly dry ground and I must say we enjoyed it fully. I'm not sure that after the rain or with little visibility it's really nice as someone wrote. Do it absolutely and then go see the gruta do natal

I hiked this trail when I first visited Terceira (when I was only 6 years old) and back then it was my favourite, so I wanted to hike it again when visiting the island again. It was super muddy and wet because it rained the days before (and a bit during the hike), but it was still super worth it. I recommend using mountain boots if possible, or at least trainers, as it's not the easiest hike in terms of terrain. Try not to miss it if you like hiking!

The hike starts rather easy and guides you through a forest, a little lake, volcanic rocks and another forest to finish the walk. You end up in the asphalt road again and you walk about 10-15 minutes to get back to the starting point.
You need good boots and get ready that there's plenty of mud and slippery stones if you visit the forest after a rainy day. Don't start the hike if it's raining.
The middle bit of the walk can be challenging if you have knee problems. Bring a walking stick to save your knees.
There are beautiful colours of nature on the go.
I highly recommend the hike.

Was reading another review of this made in January 2020 that says you have to be as fit as a mountain goat. Not sure of that was meant as a joke, but this was a relatively easy hike/trek. The official trail notice describes it as difficult. I'd rate it as easy to moderate and took me around 1hr 10 min - I was moving fast. It's suggested that it takes 2.5 hrs - if you're moving very very slowly. It's is just under 4.5 km, not 8km as previous reviewer claims.
Goodness knows what hike the previous reviewer had actually done. One of the nicest I've done on the Azores. Lakes, lava tubes, lots of volcanic geological features, magical woodlands, avenues of Japanese cedars.
A few obstacles requiring some clambering and a bit of climbing over jagged sharp volcanic rocks.
Sticks not necessary and neither are boots really, but very boggy in some places.
Highly recommended.

Reading the reviews, we were expecting sharp climbing and heavy trekking.
I carried a 5 month old baby in a strap on baby carrier and my boyfriend helped our 6yo along muddy paths.
The track is gorgeous, doable, though tricky at times.
It was one of our best afternoons on the island.

If you are not in good to excellent condition stay away. They say this route is 4.9km - bologna. I have run my entire life and I know distances very well. This hike is at least 8km. Having said that, if you like a challenge like I do, you’ll have wonderful experience. Do not think you’ll complete this is an hour as it will take, at the minimum, 2 and possibly 3. Be on the lookout for red/yellow markers that indicate the correct route. This are not always easy to spot. Be prepared to climb boulders, trek through mud and possibly twist ankles. Again, not for the faint of heart. Recommendation - for trekkers only.

It says 5 km but seems much more, beginning and end easy walk but the middle…. You are travelling through lava fuels, some parts of trail have lots of climbing over sharp boulders in fairly narrow areas. Also at times you are as if in a rain forest.

If you know Lord of the Rings, then you may well like this trail. we went off-season and had it COMPLETELY to ourselves. what a treat! volcanic in some segments, as well as marshy elsewhere, and often "elvin" or "entlike" with moss-and- lichen covered gnarled tress. also very interesting caverns and fumaroles are nearby, if you want to feel a bit 'dwarven.'

This is not an easy trail, there are tree roots, rocks and low hanging tress and you need to be able to step up / down and pull yourself through some tighter spots. But it is definitely worth it. Just under 5km (3 miles) and took approx 2 1/2 hours - we stopped a lot for photos. I would recommend good footwear (we wore our trail shoes). Last 1/2 mile is on the road back to the car park.
