I recommend visiting Sao Miquel end of April into all of May. Weather was a bit cool and overcast. It is also best to take a tour first and then god back to your favourite places.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 18, 2023
- interzoneNaples, Italy510 contributionsMy new fav place in Ponta Delgada!Great hotsprings arriving directly to a natural pool in the Atlantic Ocean! How could this not become my new fav place in Ponta Delgada? We spent the whole day there, relaxing and snorkeling, you can see lots of fish, crabs and birds. Beautiful place to enjoy both hot water and the sound of the best ocean on earth ;) Nearby you have a snackbar, i recommend the artisanal fried potatoes and soup, for a light lunch ;)Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 29, 2023
- catandgazSuffolk, United Kingdom60 contributionsGreat fun for a warm dip against a stunning backdropA really cool experience. I imagine it will be extremely busy in summer, but in October it was great - still the busiest place we visited on the island, but plenty of space nonetheless. Beautiful scenery, impressive waves against the coast and this lovely little bay with incredibly warm water. The waves were tempered and there are ropes to hang on to for the swell. Small pebbles of pumice floating on the surface. Had a lovely half hour dip, then explored some rock pools. Great fun!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 27, 2023

So I need to put some context here - have spent the last few days in Flores, Pico. Sao Jorge, Faial swimming in incredible natural pools with often very few people around. We went at 5pm to Ponta da Ferraria in early August - I would say there were 150 people in the water + another 100 lying out on the rocks - there were queues to actually get onto the ladders into the water. Even when we left around 6.30pm people were still piling in. It is a pretty unique experience but the authorities need to do more/have a ticketing system whereby there is a maximum amount of people like there is at other sites on the island as for me the sheer numbers of people in a small area really tarnished the experience.

The view, the nature, the volcanic trail, and the sea and definitely a must see. The Ferrarias natural pool is hard to get in, there are too much people, the sea current is too strong, you should wear water shoes (the rocks inside the water are sharp), always hold to the ropes that are in the water, so you go when the tide is low. So it is just for people that are not nervous or scared and can in the end relax.
We tried to go twice, gave up the first time, because there were too many people, a big crown. And this was in very low (if not empty) tourist season with the COVID-19 pandemic. The second time, it was 9:00 in the morning on a Tuesday, and there were already 10 people there. We went in, the water was not that warm because the sea waves were coming into the pool (although in low tide). Still it is a rare monument of nature, that you should visit.

We have never encountered anything quite like this in our travels. A thermal pool that is also fed by open ocean water- an App can up uploaded to one's phone to find the optimal times to go, when the water is the perfect temperature. The setting is extraordinary, as you walk across a black lava field to get to the pool, you climb down a metal ladder into the water, and there are ropes to hang onto as the tide sweeps in, often with surprising force. Highly recommended to wear water shoes, as there are big rocks underfoot.
Our time there was cut short by the tide bringing in stinging jellyfish, so the lifeguards on duty got us all out of the water.
But not before we'd gotten a chance to experience a truly unique Azorean aquatic experience.

This was a once in a lifetime experience for us. I'm not sure we should have gone in though as it was a rough day and we were buffeted around quite a bit. The younger person's seemed to handle it fine though. There are robes to hold on to so you are not smashed against the rocks or dragged out to sea. The experience of hot water pouring in with the sea doesn't happen at alot of places.

Use to visit this place so often when growing up as a kid in Ginetes , Left 54 years ago and went back to visit last October . Could not believe the changes they made for this place . You can walk or go by car all the way down . Everything is free including the parking . Well worth a visit for those that are in the area . And please eat at a local restaurant or cafe if you are visiting Ponta Da Ferraria .

Its not for pampered people, and its little dangerous, when tide is coming, but ist great! Here is free place to change to swimsuit, and cold shower. Its not for children, because here are rocks and waves.
Here is a good restaurant too. We take big burgers for 6 and 8€ and its really good. They have nice staff and clean, good looking premises.

Our Family headed to Ferraria to experience the natural hot springs in the ocean. We went at low tide early in the morning. Not all of us went in, but those that did loved the experience. So fun to watch those in the water. The water was only warmish, not hot due to the big waves coming in from the ocean. Certainly worth going to experience this natural wonder!

I did not bath but the view was amazing. The water seemed nice an de it was booming of people. The drive down the hill was a bit scary but oh so worth it. Will definitely give it a try at my next visit.

Hi, the hot spring is great but only open at certain times. Did anyone happen to find a silver wedding band lost on June 27th 2019 in the natural spring? Please contact me

How do you know when is the time to go for the water to be warm? Thank you! I heard there is a web site or app but I can't find it?

I had the same question! There is a great (and free) app that anyone coming to the Azores should download on their phone. It's called "Spot Azores" and it has a live webcam feed for many of the major attractions on the different islands. When you select the Ponta da Ferraria site (listed as "Ferraria" in the app), it shows the outdoor manmade pool but also gives the high tide and low tide times for the nearby ocean. Be sure to visit during the low tide times to experience the warmest water.
You can also just Google "Spot Azores" and search via the website if you don't want to download the app.

Greetings
I advice you to rent the car quickly, previously before travel to avoid high costs ( for a week the médium price its about 160 eur total ) Go rentalcars site choose Portugal Ponta Delgada, or visit directly ilha verde rental , hertz rental or others. Ponta da Ferraria is near the Airport, there´s no bus down there, its close to the sea and once you get a map you´ll notice that is very very close to airport, about 10 min by car with no traffic. You can ask to any local that are very honest and will thell you exactly where to turn in the road to get there. Remember that from the Hill you can see the pools that are payed but when you arrive there you go to the left on foot for 5 min walk and you will find The natural pool with warm water, there´s a hole there that is very hot, very nice to sit there, like termal water.

I tried to answer this some weeks ago but my login was rejected.
As people have said, the only way really is to go with a hire car or driver.
To be quite honest I am not even sure whether it is worth it. There were a few people in the water and on the beach however we were not really tempted. The best part was the very good cafe restaurant where the car park is!
