Breathtaking

We were lucky as the mist was just clearing with blue sky. The view is breathtaking and the village by the lake is worth exploring.

On our flight from Toronto to Lisbon, I booked a 12 hour layover. We deplaned, cleared customs and we're off in our rental car in 45 minutes. For €91 plus €15 for fuel we toured the entire island and we're back in town in time to explore and have a great local lunch before heading back to the airport. The... More

Just another beautiful location on this so beautiful island. A must see. And if you really want something special, then go and eat at the local restaurants, a local meal which is cooked in the ground via vulcani steam

Arriving on a cruise ship, we had booked an island tour that left the port in the afternoon. Our guide and mini-bus driver, bravely, stopped at several viewpoints, got very wet looking if there was anything in view, at the last stop the mist had lifted sufficiently for us to see the multi-coloured water below - probably so much better... Definitely worth a visit, very nice viewing points. Be aware that roads on the Acores are sometimes a bit old and not easy to drive, but once you are there it is really nice with perfect views. Lots of good spots also on the drive.

What a superb view from the edge of an extinct volcano. Well worth a visit if you are lucky enough to be in the Azores.

We did our own trek, using the local buses and an excellent Azores walks guide book. The buses are punctual reliable and cheap. The paths are mostly well marked, though there had been some landslides after the hurricane! The trek up is hard but worth the view at the top.

This is the typical picture-postcard photo and it looks just as beautiful in person. We were there in January, and started to drive up in the morning. The rain and fog were so bad we had to run back. After spending a few hours walking around Ponta Delgada, we noticed the sky was clearing to the west, so we tried... More

The lakes only appear to be different colours in certain weather conditions, but even in fog and rain the views are impressive. Beautiful drive to get there, too.
