Locals refer as Praia do Populo to two beaches next to each other. Praia do Populo Grande is called Praia das Milícias on the map (google). Many pictures in this entry of TA are of Praia das Milícias.

It's quite perplexing what one can read on some of the reviews found here. "Garbage in the water"? Did this person actually swim in the water? The beaches had cristal clear waters when I visited, so praise the Lord for the miracle! "Enough to spend just one hour here"? My God, what do you expect from a beach? Clowns? A performance of killer whales? Yes, there is no reef here, yes Dorie and Nemo are often found missing from these waters, but, I assure you, if you come here to spend a day at the beach you will not be disappointed.

I was here in August. The sea was as gentle as in Paradise. The beach had a steep slope that not only thrusted you forward to swimable depths as it created a curious wave reflection effect where by you can surf one wave in one direction and the one before it in the opposite direction, often at the same time. This was a big favourite of the children at beach and of at least of one grownup that I know of.

Take a taxi (7 Euros) or walk from Ponta Delgada. A couple of restaurants nearby can fix you, if you must eat a cooked meal every 4 hours. And, additionally, there are the omnipresent public water outlets to clean your feet on the way out. So I can't understand why some say that the beach has little in the way of "facilities". I'd surely like to try out the beaches they hang out in... with Nemo, Dorie and Pang, the acrobatic masseuse killer whale.

Wonderful place, just near Ponta Delgada, but amazing sea to see, to swim, to walk around... to chat a bit, to drink a wine, to read, to think... amazing!

If you've never seen a black sand beach this would be a good place to experience it. The beach is very small and quiet. You may see some fish but that's about it. One hour here and you're done.

A big sand (black sand) beach with beach-rescue. It also has bathing-huts with toilets and dusch and a very nice view on the nearby city and a church

We love this beach but the sea is a bit rough, so be careful when swimming in the Ocean. This is a very well known spot for local surfers.

Nice beach. Just obey the signs and warnings. Sometimes there are portuguese man o war and the posted warnings clearly will tell you that. Otherwise the beach is accessible, and nice.

This beach is safe beach with life guards constantly on the watch for strong currents. You can also leave your bags on the beach without worrying whether anyone would steal it. The beach is very clean and it's a beautiful spot with some dining lunch options. This beach is definitely better than the north beach if you like to experience less stronger currents. However, everything is really dependent on the weather. On a windy day, the currents could be too strong for swimming. I spent two days at this beach and it is totally walkable and safe from Ponta Delgada.

The beach is breathtaking: Beautiful black sand, perfect waves, good restaurants nearby, lots of parking space, showers. It is really a hidden gem.
