Why did they choose San Sebastian?
Jan 2020
We must pay tribute to the Portuguese -they sincerely love San Sebastian. The image of the head of the Praetorian guard of the Emperor Diocletian excited most artists who wrote on biblical themes from Botticelli and Titian to Salvador Dali. There are at least four churches dedicated to him even in the Azores, Pico,Terceira, and San Miguel as many as two. Maybe the people of Ponta Delgada chose a Roman General as the patron Saint of the city for his steadfastness. After all, he survived according to legend, even when shot with arrows. The Church itself was built between 1531 and 1547 in honor of the end of the plague. As often happens, it is a mix of styles-Gothic, Baroque and Portuguese manuelino. The reason for the mixture of styles is in permanent reconstructions, for example, the clock was installed at the end of the XIX century.

Amazing Exterior
Sep 2020
... and so is the inside. Definitely worth poking your nose in if you are admiring the outside from the cafe opposite.

Pretty at night
Jul 2019
It is the church at the center of the city near the city gates. It also has the typical architecture of the churches in Azores with a touch of Manueline-style especially on its doors.

I went in in the morning and it was a bit dark. Quite interesting still! I recommend to visit the area at night as the church is lighted and very pretty.

Go at Night
Nov 2019
You won't miss this when visiting Ponta Delgada since the church stands right next to the city gates. I suggest going there at night if at all possible for a very different feel of the church. Very impressive!

Only small but holds some magnificent relegious oil paintings

Yet another old church which is still active and allows open door access to visitors. Although it is only small compared to others in the city, it has lovely altar decorations and 4 lovely big old oil paintings on display depicting scenes of Jesus. A real find for a short visit!

The Igreja that defines Ponte Delgada
Jul 2019
Sometimes, it is difficult (not impossible) to define how a simple structure can be so ethereal and that's exactly what the Igreja evokes!
