The Museu Carlos Machado has three buildings. You can buy a ticket for one of them or a combination ticket for all three. This building had an exhibit of Prince Albert I of Monaco and his explorations of the Azores. I found it interesting.

Currently free because all of the church and most of the gallery are off limits during renovation. However, it may still be worth a quick visit while walking by since they do let you peek your head into the doorway of the church. Watching how the workmen are on scaffolds, removing and protecting the stonework and artifacts is something you don't see every day.

Don’t get mixed up there is another museum with the same name. This is the big one. In an old convent with beautiful history, there is a exhibition about the history of the Açores, and a lot of stuffed animals. The walk through the convent was for me the best. Nice to visit on a rainy day.

The two parts of the Carlos Machado Museum must not be confused. Nucleus of sacred art includes:
- The church of an ancient monastery (there was the Jesuits College); this church has an altar with wonderful wood sculptures and probably rare in the world. It is a pleasure to sit here to admire art and work.
- There is also a collection of religious art.
- While I was there, there was an exhibition of beautiful paintings by Duarte Maia, a painter from the island.
I think art lovers should enter this museum.

I stumbled across this museum. It was very inexpensive (2 euros) to get in and I ended up spending a couple of hours there. It was a Natural History Museum with lots of great exhibits combined with a church that has a very interesting history as a cloistered nunnery. Very much enjoyed!

There are three museums that operate together close by. By mistake, we entered the first museum, Nucleo de Santo Andre, a room of sculptures by an Azorean artist. The main museum, Nucleo de Santa Barbara/ Museo Carlos Machado, is located a block up, in the old convent, and turned out to be the best museum value of our Portugal trip. It is a general Azores history plus natural history, with an amazing and well-laid out collection of all sorts of sea and land creatures, part of the personal collection of Carlos Machada, who, lived here in the 1800s. I disagree with the previous reviewer who complained about lack of a map. It is fairly obvious how you make your way through the exhibits, up a few sets of stairs and around, and eventually back down the same way. (We did not see an elevator.) In this way, you can catch the other sides of each gallery as you turn to begin your exit back down. I have certainly been in many museums less well routed. The little restaurant across the street had a good value lunch plate, and the whole experience made for a happy rainy day in Ponta Delgada.

There are 2 sections to this museum: one in an old church, and the other a few blocks away. In the main museum you need to pay 2 EUR to enter, but the collection is pretty impressive. In the other museum it's free and there is a smaller collection of mainly modern art.

I went into an entrance labeled Museu Carlos Machado Nucleo do Santa Andre and saw the same things that other people refer to as being in the Nucleo de Santa Barbara. This museum has a number of different types of exhibits -- some are religious and some are natural history, and there is a movie on production of a local food (some type of bread I think). The natural history portion is mostly dead mounted animals. The two things which interested me were a Carolina Paraquet and a weird bottom feeding fish hanging on a wall. Part of the Museum consisted of a convent. You can do this museum in 30-45 minutes or take longer if you want. If you have to choose between this and Nucleo de Arte Sacra/Igreja do Coegio and this do the Nucleo de Arte Sacra. You can also do the very nearby Museum of Canto do Maya (a local artist)..

It took 32 years for this altarpiece to be carved by the Jesuits a few centuries ago. It is stunning to view and not something you will ever see in even the most ornate of churches in Europe. Don't miss this.

Museum covers the history and geography of Azores, which is interesting. Huge part of the exhibition is dedocated to conservated animals from Azores and all around the world, which begun to bring some weird moments during the tour.
You can also look closer at the life of local nuns from past periods and see short documentary about Sao Miguel festivities.
Personnel is very kind and helpful, however the exhibition would need some more support in word, mainly in English.
