We stopped in this fort museum and it was so much more than I expected. For a couple euros, you must make a visit! They have all kinds of old military vehicles and equipment, as well as old uniforms, guns, knives, very interesting! It is quite large, with many rooms to explore. You can also go to the top and the views are amazing. Don't miss this visit while on the island.

This very historic fort is located on the harbour side, over which it held a commanding position. It is now a military museum dedicated to the Portuguese army, especially commemorating those from the Azores islands. Housed in the very large historic fort, it is well worth the visit.

If you are looking to spend an hour or two away from the drizzle or escape the kids, this is a great place. Displayed in a series of tunnels beneath the fort, it takes you through from the crude swords, sabres and flintlocks of the early island years, WW1, the period concerning their non combative role in WWII to their more recent involvement and withdrawal from the African colonies. Not glamorised or made adventurous, but fact and honestly based. Neat and interesting. Portugal do have a pretty impressive military contingent...and special forces which can compete with the best.

This is in a rather damp and decaying old fort near the town centre. It has a lot of really interesting exhibits laid out in a rather haphazard style it seemed to me. I learnt a lot here particularly at the section dedicated to Portugals military campaigns in Africa which was well laid out and very clear. If you come to Ponta Delagado dont miss it.

There's very little English in the small exhibits of this museum so you don't get very much out of it unless you also speak Portuguese. Go explore the fort and skip the museum.

To be honest, I still don't know much about the history of the fort itself, but more so about the political and military past of Portugal starting at the 1st WW, including its colonial past (Angola, Mozambique). About half of the displays are explained in English. It's a self guided tour that leads you through a number of rooms (catacombs), each dedicated to a particular subject. I only noticed one large room dedicated to medieval weaponry. Outside on the ground level are a number of military vehicles. Outside are stairs that take you up to the battlements adorned with some guns pointing menacing to the harbor.
Entrance fee is very cheap. It's a great place to visit on a dreary day and only a very close walk from the city. It's a very nice place to visit if you have some extra time on your hands.
The military private at the desk was very talkative (fluent English) and very helpful.

Thought this was going to be a couple of rooms with a few artefacts. Was surprised by the layout, atmosphere and the size. Loved wandering though the fort and not knowing what is in the next room. Felt like a mini adventure. Well worth the 3 Euro entrance fee.

I was surprised at the extent of the military content covered in this museum. There are objects from 17th century onwards. The majority of the museum focuses on 20th century military history. The captions in the museum are almost entirely in Portuguese, but with a little intuition you are able to decipher pretty much everything. The views from the top of the fort don't need any deciphering, best views of the waterfront and the city that you will get. It was well worth the 3 euro that we paid to get in.

We discovered this museum almost by accident while walking in Ponta Delgada. The fortress on the waterfront is pretty awesome, and for a very small admission, you can look through displays of equipment, uniforms, and explanatory panels covering military history in the Azores and Portugal. It wasn't overwhelming, but glad we visited it.
