For over a week, from the pick up and drop off at the airport, Ricardo and the Amazing Tours staff ensured that we were safe, worry-free and exposed us to beautiful views and sights. Ricardo was very flexible and often adjusted his schedule to "juggle" our destinations taking the weather into account. He was always helpful and had a big smile-even when he had to deliver 16 of us to get our Covid tests!
On many occasions, he helped with the language barrier-again, guaranteeing our smooth experience in Sao Miguel! Can't wait to go back!

I brought my nephew & niece for their first trip to Sao Miguel, Azores and I am so glad we found Amazing Tours. Our very knowledgeable and funny tour guide Ricardo is top notch!  He has a great knowledge of the island and use of technology with checking various web cams to check for optimal weather conditions. With his expertise we were able to experience more in 2 days than we could ever imagine. He answered all of our questions and made a perfect recommendation on a hotel in Ponta Delgada. It’s been a month since our trip and my nephew, niece and can’t stop talking about much fun we had looking back at the hundreds of amazing photos we took. We can't wait to go back and see more of Sao Miguel and the rest of the Azores. Thanks again Ricardo & Amazing Tours for the fantastic experience!

Jose gave us a great four hour tour of the western side of the island and the city of Ponta Delgada. He was very informative and helped us understand the history and special features of the island. We were out about 3.5 hours which was perfect for us.
Thank you Jose and best regards, John and Linda

My wife and I just recently returned from a group trip to Sao Miguel. Riccardo was our tour guide for the trip starting with picking us up from the airport. He was a great guide, always cheerful and accommodating, and being a native of the island he was very knowledgeable. His tours included beautiful vista views of the island, lakes, and the ocean along with historical stops and family owned businesses from many generations. We strongly recommend Amazing Tours!

We could not have been happier with our tour of the island! Ricardo was waiting for us as we got off our cruise ship and immediately made us feel welcome. His knowledge of all types of things about the island was impressive. And he had a great sense of humor too. He was the best guide we have encountered in all of our travels! True to their word, we managed to avoid all of the tour buses by getting an early start. And we saw much more than we ever could otherwise. The views, the Calderas, the history! It was perhaps the best day of our cruise. We had a little help from the weather gods, providing a beautiful day to enjoy a beautiful place. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

Every moment of the 2 full days tour was over the top. Our very experienced and friendly tour guide Ricardo went way over and above any preconceived expectations. From the moment of pickup at our hotel. Ricardo made us feel at home. His knowledge and pride of this magical island is immense. The lighthouse tour just about had me in tears. We can’t wait to return again to Sao Miguel and visit our newfound “home”. Every stop had incredible views. We got to experience Azorean culture at its source. Now, back home in “little Azores “ Greater New Bedford, MA USA the knowledge gained will make new connections. Can’t wait to return here and visit our new friend whom I can call Brother with pride, Ricardo.

We did a shore excursion with Amazing Tours during our recent cruise. Ricardo was the perfect host, guide and driver. He was knowledgeable, kind and humorous, .....and getting passengers back to their ship in good time is a priority for him which makes for a relaxing trip. We learned a lot and will definitely ask for him again on our next visit to the Azores.

We used Amazing Tours for two half days tours of Sao Miguel and we were so happy. Jose was knowledgeable about the island and we learned so much. We thought of renting a car and try to see the island ourselves, but thankfully we used Amazing Tours. H

Ricardo was the best tour guide I've ever had, anywhere! He loves his work, the island, and sharing that love with the visitors he hosts on his tours. His enthusiasm was infectious; we all left with a good bit of his joy for his beautiful island. Thanks, Ricardo!

OK, so why such a low review for such a highly rated guide service on Trip Advisor? Read on, dear traveller.

Amazing Tours provided us with guide service while on Sao Miguel Island. We were off the Norwegian Star on a trans Atlantic crossing.. The island has some brief beautiful elements of other places we have seen, most notably the route up Kilauea on Hawaii, Fern Gully in Jamaica, and the volcanism found on Dominica. Most of all, it reminded me of the island on the old British TV show, The Prisoner. The entire island seemed to be an immaculately kept garden. There was absolutely no garbage anywhere, not even leaf litter. I had never seen so many people out just tidying up. If Patrick McGoohan had been kept here, he would either have grown to love it or he would have been inspired to actually succeed in getting off the darn island due to its perfection! The island is well worth touring.

Ok, Ok, why the poor score?

I book entirely through Trip Advisor recommendations and have never drawn snake eyes until this tour. I had corresponded extensively via email with Ricardo, the owner, before we left. I selected him over other highly ranked providers because Ricardo was willing to offer on the spot tour changes due to the notoriously fickle weather conditions on the island. We had discussed a particular tour before we left, which involved the viewing the multicolored lakes. He stated that should visibility be a problem, he would alter the tour when we arrived. I thought that sounded great.

Ricardo, who is very personable, met us at the agreed time on the pier. He informed us that his assistant would be taking us on the tour and left us to escort another group. Although I had not been informed of this arrangement, I didn’t think too much about it at the time, assuming a professional tour company would employ professional guides. I had run into this in previous travels and it hadn’t been a problem.

His assistant was a very pleasant young man and informed us that he would contact a relation who lived by the lakes to check visibility. He made the call and fully informed us of the conditions at the lake. We made the decision to proceed with the agreed upon tour and take a chance on the lake viewing. The van was immaculate. So far, so good.

Things immediately took a turn for the worse as the tour began. The guide proceeded to narrate his own personal history but little of the island. Getting to personally know your guide is always wonderful provided that, at a minimum, the guide also provides the client with the history of the island, information of the present status of the place, and other pieces of interesting and unique information, which, for the most part, we did not receive. The guide should also be prepared to answer basic questions posed by the client. As an example, he had no knowledge of the island’s status in World War II, etc. I found myself working hard just trying to draw out basic information. His English was fine, by the way. The tour was basically “What you see is what you get. “ As an example, he dropped us off in a picturesque town. There wasn’t one word about what we were seeing. ”Strike one”.

The second issue, which was much more annoying, had to do with his cell phone usage. This guy was constantly on his cell. I completely lost track of how many calls he took. He actually spent more time on his cell interacting with his family and friends than he did interacting with us, his clients! Incredible! At one point I said, with emphasis, “You seem to spend A LOT of time on that cell!” Being from Minnesota, that is about as nasty as we get. He didn’t pick up on the hint. I should have thrown in a “darn it”. Strike Two.

At about the time we should have been heading back to the ship, he informed us of what was would be due for the tour, which was more than agreed upon amount. We then found out that we were actually on the full island tour, not the partial tour as anticipated! Strike Three. (By the way, the full island tour is not worth the extra cost, even with a professional guide. It is also much too long to go without any food) Being at his mercy to get us back to the ship, we kept our cool and finished the tour. I figured I would deal with Ricardo later.

Upon returning to the ship, I immediately contacted Ricardo about the problems. I was happy to take partial responsibility for the tour mix up. I should have clarified the tour number before we left. On the other hand, the guide or Ricardo should have done so as well. Ricardo should have addressed the other issues. At a minimum, an offer of a partial refund should have been in order. Had there been such an offer, I would probably not have written this review, chalking it up to one unfortunate experience for Ricardo and us.

Ricardo’s response, while lengthy, was basically “sorry about that” and he would “punish” his guide about the cell phone issue. No offer of any refund. As such, I have no misgivings whatsoever in writing a review that will certainly not be of future benefit to Ricardo and his tour company.

Here’s what I think happened. Ricardo had more business off the Star than he could personally handle, so he got a buddy to be our “guide”. As a professional tour operator, Ricardo should have provided this guide with training, including personally touring with this person until he was ready. I can’t imagine this ever happened due to the low knowledge base of the guide. Ricardo’s professionalism is also in question when he failed to take appropriate action when given an opportunity to do so by the customer, i.e. some compensation. It is also disturbing that he chose the word “punish” rather than “train” when referring to the guide. Ricardo’s problem here was not the guide. It was his mismanagement. As such, my advice for Amazing Tours is “Buyer Beware!”

Based on the positive reviews for this tour company, I would perhaps recommend tours only with Ricardo as your guide. I would refuse to accept any tour with an employee.

By the way, our fellow Norwegian Star passengers reported good reviews of the ship tours, which were either adjusted due to weather conditions or had dumb luck because they reported sunny conditions. On our “weather adjusted tour” we were in rain most of the day. Ouch, that hurt!

We acknowledge your review. We are sorry you are not pleased with the service of our guide, Victor. The company already spoke to him about the cell calls and the other issues. We must tell you the company is taking action over this matter but, with surprised, so Victor has been a reliable tour guide. Very, very unfortunate. Having said that, there is another issue or issues, that this company is “forced” to clarify due to your review comments on paragraphs 9 and 10 (At about…/Upon returning….): You, dear customer, implied that changes occurred to the selected tour without your knowledge and for that reason the cost was higher than previously agreed. Not true. And you know it is not true if you refer to our exchange emails. At one point you say “….we then found out that we were actually on the full island tour….”. How can you say that if you only did “Sete Cidades” and “ Lagoa do Fogo”? Further more you say “…..at a minimum, an offer of a partial refund should have been in order. Had their been such an offer, I would probably not have written this review….”. Having you said that, no, Sir, we are glad you did. To your last paragraph (By the way…) we, frankly, say no comments. Finally, your advice for Amazing Tours is “buyer beware”. Thank you. Thank you, because Amazing Tours is in the market for over 14 years and with Trip Advisor for about one year. We have served thousands of customers and they know we stand for integrity and honesty. We are not perfect and we know it. But, we work hard every day to be better then yesterday. Best regards RA
