After reading many reviews on Futurismo and MobyDick, we went with MobyDick because of the lower price and longer duration (4h vs 3h) and were not disappointed.
Probably due to not many visitors these days (covid19), they were not going out every day. But we told them how long we would be there and kept in touch. They chose a sunny day to go out and we saw commong dolphins, a few sperm whales and two fin whales! Baleen whales are usually seen in spring when they stop there during migration so we were very lucky to see some in Semptember! The Futurismo boat was also around at first and saw the dolphins and sperw whales, but turned back earlier and missed the fin whales. They did, as I saw later on their blog, spend more time with the dolphins on the way back (we stopped by the dolphins only for a couple minutes and then moved on to chase the whales).
MobyDick is a family-owned company and they are truly excited when they find animals and make sure people are looking the right direction. They are careful and do not get too close to the animals, so for whales you have to be lucky the whale chooses to go really near the boat. In the end thay explain what animals you saw.
Definitely recommed. The boat is comfortable and in good condition though I would advise that in bad weather like any ship you cold have a bad experience if you get easily seasick, so be wary of that before going on any tour with any company!

This is a family run business. On 4/12/22, the weather had low clouds and relatively poor visibility to start. The captain/owner said “we will go, if we don’t see any whales/dolphins, there will be no charge.” We had not even paid before the trip and got on the converted passenger ferry which is exquisitely well maintained. We headed out and the fog /clouds lifted. The captain, crew, and onshore watch man did everything for us to find significant marine live. The whales had not yet arrived into the Azores but we saw pod after pod of dolphin through their efforts. I would highly recommend Moby Dick for their knowledge and honesty. Their is no “middle man” as you book directly with them in front of their boat on the water front in Ponta Delgado. Enjoy.

We started our experience booking online, on the website of the company, where you can check the availability of expeditions.
The next morning we saw the beautiful wooden boat and we did our trip. We saw two Fin Whales (mother and baby) and a lot of Common Dolphins! The trip duration is non less than 4 hours, so we also did a trip around the islet of Villa Franca do Campo.
Returning in the harbour the captain told us informations about the animals we saw, and also about his personal history.
The MobyDick Tours is a family business, and thanks to no advertising or selling agency can guarantee the lowest price for this kind of expeditions.
The captain and the staff were very friendly and they care about the cetaceans, they know how to play with them and when to leave them alone.

Some tours strap people in like a carnival ride. Moby Dick is the only whale watching cruise to go out in a beautifully restored and maintained teakwood craft, originally built in the Azores and used for inter island transportation. Family owned and operated, the owner is an experienced seaman who trained in celestial navigation and worked in Connecticut for many years before returning to the Azores, and is very knowledgeable about the local sea life. They do not solicit customers through arrangements with tour operators, so are able to provide an exceptionally high quality experience at a better price than the higher throughput operations. I'll admit, the choice initially wasn't obvious as there are several highly rated operators out of Ponta Delgada. I picked Moby Dick by chance because we were standing in line behind the owner's son  and young family to see the USCG Barque Eagle when it was in port, and we had a nice conversation. He was wearing his Moby Dick shirt. This morning while watching others head out in much more commercial operations, I took a comfortable seat on the front deck teakwood bench, stretched my legs, sat back in the morning sun and set out for a wonderful experience on the smooth, deep drafting restored antique vessel - the boat ride was every bit as enjoyable as the whale and dolphin watching! Note: Take a small backpack with drinks, snacks and sunscreen.

We booked this tour 2 days in advance, after looking over other tour operators, this one was 50% less expensive. The crew was helpful and punctual. Everybody did their best and we managed to see a very big group of dolphins. Then we set out quite far from the island and succeeded in sighting at least 4 or maybe even more sperm whales! The captain was intent on giving us a full experience, staying with the animals quite long. The minus of this enthusiasm was that several people were sick, since we were sailing on very high waves. The trip lasted 5 hours instead of the planned 4h. We are happy to get our moneys worth, however please do take a pill if you get at all seasick.

This is a family run business, with all the members as part of the crew. This creates the perfect context for an amazing 4 hour trip (at least) with the captain explaining what you're seeing with true delight. The boat is also perfect, with a lot of space and viewing points. I really recommend this attraction!

Top notch experience, as we had a blast during the whale watching tour and were able to spot sperm and sardine whales but also a plethora of dolphins that played around the boat and followed us for minutes.
A unique experience. The tour also lasted for an additional half hour since the Captain and Crew had spotted one more m. You ammalcan tell that they are all passionate about what they do.
Special shout-out to the Captain who was very approachable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the ocean and even recommended us to visit Vila Franco do Campo, which we went to days later and actually met him and further discussed life on the island and Azores.
Would recommend to anyone looking for a good time watching and learning about whales & dolphins.

Highly recommended.

It was a great experience with a really nice crew. The captain was very stubborn with his desire to show the whales, and even it was not high season and other boats gave up we were really lucky and saw 3 pairs of whales. There were mommy with a baby whale. An amazing view!
It was pretty stormy and more than a half of the tourists were seasick. Don’t underestimate the sea, at least take some medicine with you just in case. Raincoats and sunscreen as well.i It was really stormy and windy, but to get inside was unreal because of the smell.
The captain knows a lot about the animals, and at the end of the trip he entertained us with lots of interesting information about the sea animals.
In case do get back to Azor I will definitely repeat my experience only with MobyDick Tours

The weather was iffy and the captain was on the phone for a long-time. There were about fifty or sixty of us lined up to go whale watching. He told us that the sea is a little rough and the chances to see Whales/Dolphins are 50-50 but if we decide to go out and see nothing, we don't have to pay. Almost all of us decided to go and we had an excellent experience. The crew was friendly and helpful, we spent a little over four hours at sea, saw bunches of Dolphins chasing the boat, crossing in front of it clearly playing and then they tracked down a monster of blue 🐳 whale and got to within fifty feet of it. You cannot believe your eyes at the size of this thing. Upon returning, we were all very happy and, of course, paid the 50€ (better price than 65 that most others charge). Great!!!

Family-run outfit with a very nice boat, comfortable seats, inside area for shade, and top and bottom viewing decks. Captain and crew are friendly and knowledgeable, and explain what you are seeing along the way, with a more elaborate briefing on the trip back to shore. This trip is 4hrs with morning and afternoon departures, which is longer than all the other companies, and it's the least expensive trip as well! You can book in person at the booth or reserve and pay online. One of our travelers couldn't make it and we received our refund promptly. You can bring your own drinks and snacks on the boat, there aren't any for sale on the boat. We went on an afternoon trip and did not see sperm whales (but did see other whales), so we went a few days later on a morning trip and saw them! And several groups of dolphins too! It was great, we highly recommend!
