- margaretzakoor2 contributionsSete CidadesBreathtaking views with awesome quad dune buggy tour guides Louis and Reuban. We did the full day tour that included excellent buffet food and choice of beer, wine etc. Great tour fir a great price.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 15, 2023
- TgkavWashago, Canada154 contributionsAmazing viewsWhat an amazing view we had from the lookout. We tried to view the lakes yesterday but the clouds ere too low and we couldn’t see anything through the clouds. Our guide asked us if we wanted to try again today and the group unanimously agreed and once we drove to the top of the caldera we were all impressed with what we saw. The view was spectacular. Well worth going back.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 31, 2024
- Pamela A119 contributionsBreathtaking beauty! This place is gorgeous. I went one day and it was too foggy to get the best view, so I went back on a clear day. The guide said that the Azores can experience four seasons in a day. Fog is common. It’s a breathtaking place to see!Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 25, 2024
- Travel Loving CanuckOntario, Canada175 contributionsSpectacular AdventureCaldeira das Sete Cidades is a must-see destination that offers an incredible experience. The 23 km hike around the twin lakes is nothing short of spectacular, providing breathtaking views and a true sense of adventure. The lush landscapes and vibrant colors of the lakes make every step worthwhile. My only suggestion is the addition of more restrooms along the trail. Despite this, it's an unforgettable journey that showcases the stunning beauty of the Azores. Highly recommended! Wear good hiking shoes as the terrain can be slippery.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 18, 2024
- GerriMolinLas Vegas, Nevada30 contributionsAn awesome dayEduardo picked us up on time, a d returned us to starting point. He was so knowledgeable about the island, it's ecosystem and stopped at all the favorite points. It was such an enjoyable afternoon and met all of our 28-68 age ranges. Jeep was great and Eduardo drove safely!! Thanks Eduardo for a great time on our visit to the Azores fto the US!! I recommend this tour of the crater and it's lagoons!!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 10, 2024
- Steve_of_N21London, United Kingdom3,274 contributionsA must visit when on the island of Sao MiguelThe twin lake complex of Sete Cidades, formed in the crater of the much larger Sete Cidades Massif is one of the iconic views of the Azores so of course you have to come and see it for yourself and I hope you are blessed with a perfect weather day as we were. Whether you are exploring by foot or by vehicle the scenery and flower and fauna are truly stunning. There are several hiking paths along the various lakes but these can be rocky, narrow and quite possibly slippery depending on the weather so propper hiking attire is strongly recommended. If by vehicle then there are several Miradouro’s, the most popular being Miradouro da Grota do Inferno. But there are also additional ones on the road down to Sete Cidades which give a different vista to the one you see in the tourist trip brochures. Miradouro da Vista do Rei and Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras are worth stopping at for the vistas.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 28, 2024
- Kathy S83 contributionsTiming is everythingThis was a once in a lifetime experience. When we went early in the morning it was cloudy and misting. In the afternoon it was clear and beautiful. The ideal time would be a sunny morning because there would be fewer people in your photos. The weather changes quickly, so it’s all a matter of timing. Don’t forget to visit the bottom of the Caldera at the town of Sete Cidades.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 8, 2024

Beautiful walk and scenery. Try to go on a clear day if possible. If travelling to Sete Cidades by bus get a taxi to the top where you can start the walk (otherwise you will be tired just from walking to the top). There are different trails to choose from. Worth taking waterproofing as the weather changes very quickly. If you are wondering what the ruin is near the the top of the road road from Sete Cidades - a ***** ruin hotel that only operated for around 18months and won an award for being the best in Portugal on the day it closed 30 or so years ago.

Drove from Ponta Delgada to this magnificent place, the views form the top of the mountains are so stunning and once you reach the town and see the lake itself it's really worth it. Try some local delicacies also. Pray for the weather not to rain!

Amazing views! This main view is just by parking so is suitable for anyone to enjoy. Parking places get very busy however most people do not stay for very long. We parked up and walked through the forest continuing on the top of hill with wonderful views.
Place was less busy in the morning however mornings can be very misty.

This beautiful view can be seen at Miradouro Vista do Rei where you can see the two lagoons green and blue! Has a beautiful folk story behind it... you can see when is sunny the difference in color on the water. To visit the lagoons just go down to the road and you will pass in the bridge you see in the photo. You can walk in both, take a picnic and even do some water sports.

We actually came here on two different days during our vacation because it's too spectacular of a view not to admire twice. Pictures! Pictures! Pictures! From every possible angle! Also highly romantic. So much so that my boyfriend chose it for making his MARRIAGE PROPOSAL!

We waited days to see this view, while we didn’t get to get the whole picture, it still was amazing. Go down into town to walk around the lakes.
Download the Spot the Azores app to make sure you can see cameras in real time to check out the view.

Hi, anyone know the best way to tackle this experience with the least amount of hiking? How strenuous is the hike to the various viewpoints? Can you drive to them? Thanks
Written December 28, 2018
In order to get the two best views, there is very limited walking needed. The first viewpoint is where the abandoned hotel is. This has a big parking lot and is where most of the tourists can be found. The second view point is about a 15 minute walk, but not very strenuous terrain. To get there, you go past the hotel (so the hotel on your right, view of lakes on your left) and continue on that road. Don't take the next left that looks like the road is going down to the lakes. Continue straight on that road for about 15 minutes and you will see a sign for a park, with a dirt parking lot. The gate is open so drive down there and it will bring you to more parking about 5 minutes in. (totally fine for any type of car). From here, you will be able to see exactly where to go for the best view.

The visit azores website is saying that the trails around Sete Cidades are closed. Does anyone know if this really means they are closed, or is it possible to hike still? Thanks.
Written February 9, 2018
We were there in November and had no problem with accessing trails. Seasonal weather may have changed that, check with Tourism Azores, they are very current and knowledgeable .
Written February 12, 2018

Canario trail head?

As the previous members mentioned there is plenty of parking.

Is it better I drive here or go ona jeep tour
? Thanks
Written May 9, 2017
Either is good. If you take jeep or van tour then you get the benefit of the guide taking you to all the best viewing locations and their knowledge. Driving yourself limits your ability to see everything possible and believe me, the views are terrific.

Qual o melhor caminho, saindo de Ponta delgada até à Lagoa para não perder os melhores pontos de atracção?

I am traveling to Sao Miguel this coming June

Any one knows?
Thank you

It is a very safe place to drive and hike around. The weather can change pretty quickly though, especially mist, with good to zero visibility in seconds. Just be smart and have a phone or let people know where you are going.
There are some good guides that are very reasonable and can take you to places not on the maps. We uses T4W and Delfim was wonderful and took us to places he thought we would like.
