Lagoa do fogo and sete cidades are something no one have to miss. It’s hard to choose from one or the other. It’s simply fantastic and gladly I could appreciate it without clouds. TOP

The journey is amazing around the lake. It is a great drive around with multiple viewpoints along the way. We elected to stop by the radio towers and hike up the hill there (probably under an hour round trip) as up top you are rewarded with better views of the lake and some paths there as well. Once you get to the spot by the derelict hotel you will see the amazing viewpoints of the lakes there (you’ll see a number of tourists and buses stop there). We personally felt you can get by driving around without doing much actual hiking, though there are paths available for you to traverse if so inclined. You can easily spend a few hours driving around and stopping for pictures. Please indicate if this was helpful to you as it will help me focus my future efforts!

We were fortunate to see the 'Lake of Fire' on a clear day -- there was no fog or clouds. It's higher than the Sete Cidades and also beautiful.

This hike was wonderful- it’s a packed dirt trail, lined with beautiful and interesting flora. The trail was not to crowded and was well maintained. The views were spectacular- cloud free and very gorgeous!
Trail is marked with a red and yellow parallel like blaze.
Keep in mind this is a linear trail, so you should plan the walk back or to meet a ride in the city below.
There are a few lots for “longer term” parking, from which you will have to walk to the trailhead (near the viewing platform).

From the viewpoint you can also see the vents where the famous cozido dish is cooked. The area is green and can look like a Swiss landscape.

Lovely mountains and incredible views of both the lake and the sea coast as you descend the trail. Come prepared to hike! The trail is steep and parts of it are exposed to the sun. Walking poles aren’t essential, but recommended for the trip back down. My wife, daughter, and I brought a picnic lunch which we enjoyed in a spot overlooking the lake. Plenty of interesting flora on the trail and beautiful vistas around every corner.

My favorite lake of the island. You have to download the app spot azores to check the webcam daily, as this lake gets foggy almost daily!. The track down is made of multiple steps, so be aware that you have fo be mildly fit to come back up. But alternatively, there are multiple viewpoints to see the lake. Its very calm and absolutely breathtaking. Its my second time there and I’ll always go back to it.

Absolutely beautiful! It is possible to hike along the cratet to look down on the lake, and also hike down to the lake and to the beach. We did not, but we should have.

If you do only one thing in the Azores, you should go here. You will need to plan around the clouds, but when the clouds open up, the view of this lake will be one you might never forget. It is hard to describe or even to capture in a photo.

Yet another spectacular place on the island. Unfortunately we could not get here on a clear day but we did finally make it to actually see the view. If you're able, this is stunning. Best viewed at Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa (I'm told by the loacls we befriended) though we never got the chance to see from there through the clouds on several attempts. Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo is also a great spot and where you can pick up the trail down to the lake if you're up for some work. Even with the cloud cover on the day we could finally see the lake, it was still a stunning view. The wonders of nature on this island is truly spectacular.

Kedves Mindenki
Rita

Was looking to take road EN5-2A down from Centro de Interpretação Ambiental da Caldeira Velha, are there viewpoints that I can see the lake from a viewpoint if I pull my car over? Thanks.

We drove it yesterday. Easy drive and well marked parking spots along the way. If weather is good you should be able to see it all. Even if it is a little cloudy. But don't let the weather stop you. We noticed it can change very quickly on the island. One minute we were in the clouds at the top, the next it had blown away leaving us a beautiful view.

I don't believe there is public transport to the mountain. We rented a vehicle and drove to the top(rim) and then hiked down. I did notice several couples coming from the bottom and hiking up as we were going down. There are tour buses that go up but I didn't actually see any during the time we were there.

Hi - would this be a suitable day out for a family including one with limited mobility? Are the stairs/ walkways steep, how uneven is the ground for walking on and is the paths a decent width?
thanks

There is a paved road going to the top of the hill overlooking the lake, but I really would not see it as a hiking area. You would want to take a vehicle to the top. Once there, you will find plenty of easy places to walk near the road. However, the "money" view overlooking the crater requires a short walk on a narrow, uneven, and rocky path. I would not recommend that for someone with limited mobility.
At the level of the lake, there is a scenic overlook area. There is a narrow path down to the beach. I did not take it, but it looked reasonably smooth and not overly steep for those with good mobility in relatively decent shape. However, it is a long path, it does go downhill, and it is not wide, so I would not recommend it for someone with limited mobility.
Mostly, you can get the best views from either a vehicle window or by stepping onto the pavement at the scenic overlooks. This lake is one of the most beautiful parts of the island, if not the most beautiful, and should not be missed.
