    Beautiful lake
Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) is a volcano caldera. When the last eruption occurred in 1563, the inhabitants thought it was a fire lake, hence the name. The views from the crater rim of Lagoa do Fogo are magnificent. You can even see Ponta Delgada.

    Must visit!
An absolutely beautiful visit! The views are amazing. The hike was incredible and the trail around the lake is gorgeous. Heads up, during certain months if you’re driving a rental car, you need to park down the hill and board a bus (5€) to reach the viewpoint and start of the hiking trail.

Hiking tour of Lagoa do Fogo
I took a tour walking all the way to the top and then down to the lake. I was by myself so I went with a guide from Fun Activities Azores Adventures. I was very glad I did this because my guide Daniella was very informative about all the plants and things we saw. She was a great source of knowledge about the island in general and we had an amazing conversation the whole time. I don't really like tours but I thought that for a first time it was much more secure and interesting to do it this way.

Beautiul lagoa - no hike needed!
Most of the reviews of Lagoa do Fogo insist that a hike is required to view this majestic site, that's not accurate. It's important to note that for visitors who are unable or don't have the time for a 2 hr hike and/or dealing with the shuttle, you can view this lake by car and from a couple of viewpoints. The easiest way to see Lagoa do Fogo without hiking is to input Miradouro da Barrosa on your GPS, the views from this viewpoint and the others on the way down give you the full vantage point of this beautiful lake.

    Very worth it!!!! Soooo. Azores
The views are INCREDIBLE. Jaw dropping. At first we were worried about the shuttle bus you need to take to get up to the best views but those worries are no longer valid. The bus runs every half hour ( we did get lucky with our arrival time in the parking lot)...but still...no 70 minute wait as some of the reviews from 2023 said. The bus is 5 euros pp and makes 3 very nice stops

The lake is truly stunning but check arrangements if you are in a hire car and not with a guide.
This is another of the islands truly stunning volcano lakes which is best visited when the clouds are not shrouding the top of the hills, and this they do often. Although the ‘lake of fire’ got its name from the 1563 eruption the name sticks because it is frequently shrouded in low lying cloud, giving the impression of an erupting volcano. It is accessed via the EN5-2A which will take you past the Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa and Miradouro Lagoa do Fogo, the two best points to stop to get a stunning vista of this lake. There are several tracks down to and around the lake, which we did not do, but our guide mentioned that the descents get quite narrow near the bottom and should be attempted by competent hikers with the correct footwear. The tracks are fine once you are at lake side. We were on a guided tour so could drive directly to the various view points for this glorious lake, but there are restrictions at certain times of the year ( I believe June to September) for anyone without a guiding permit, and this was definitely the case in August when we visited, when other tourists in hire cars are not permitted to use the road after 9.00am and you have to park in the car parks at the bottom on each side and take either the red or blue shuttle busses to the lake viewpoint’s ( charge of 5euros). I can certainly relate to the negative reviews from last year about this shuttle service. Glad to hear that the previous reviewer had no problems but when we parked in the main Caldeira Veira car park to visit the Monumento Natural da Caldeira Veira, it didn’t look like the situation has improved and it was clearly obvious the half hour bus service from here is woefully insufficient for the amount of people that want to visit the lake and from the length of queue I saw a wait of 90 minutes would be most likely for some.

You cannot go in with your car between 9-7pm unless you are with a tour or a resident. You pay 5 euro/pp for a bus. It comes quite seldomly, we waited for 45 minutes. It is supposed to stop at stops but our bus only stopped at 2 stops and we were not able to go to the thermal baths. When we asked why not the third stop (stops labeled 1-3), they said oh you have to transfer to the other bus which was not mentioned and not on the sign. The busload was quite annoyed. Also you can hike down to the lake from stop 2, but they didn't mention that either and there is no signage at stop 2 to indicate. It's a beautiful lake, but they haven't quite gotten there with their service and information.

Dec 2019
I visited Azores for the first time just after Christmas of 2019. My cousin and I arrived Dec. 29. Weather was ok, a comfortable 15 C, a mix of sun showers and cloud. We opted to stay near Furnas (pronounced “Fur-nish” with accent on first syllable). We decided our daily itinerary based on the weather. Our trip to Lagoa do Fogo ended up happening Dec. 30th. We read other reviews and decided that because the sky had gotten pretty cloudy, we wouldn’t do any of the hikes as the trails were likely very muddy and slippery. (I have a bum knee.) Instead, we drove up to the summit and parked in the small parking lot at the base of the antennas. Then we walked up the steep dirt road used by service vehicles to get the panoramic view. Well worth it, even on a cloudy day. Tip: check the internet site with all the webcams set up at key towns and scenic points all across the island (visitazores.com)

This was our first hike on the Acores.
We parked on the parking on the northwest part of the lake (see photo of the hike).

The views on the lake are awesome and even if the weather was not the best we really enjoyed the hike.

Our only disappointment is that you cannot make a round around the lake and you have to come back by the same path.

But that remains a super hike to make !!

Beautiful place but we wasted the day due to the incompetent shuttle service we have been forced to take.
Not given a chiuse we have been forced to take rhe shuttle with no indication on stopping and pick up time. Exsausted of waiting ar the last stop ar caldera Vehla we asked the driver how long would take the pic up. He said 30 mins, but in real we waited 1 hour and 10 minutes. They charge the shuttle, for the service they give and for wasting tourists time they should be ashamed

The place is stunning. The shuttle bus is horrendous . From June 2023 the access is regulated by a shuttle bus. There is ONE shuttle bus running every 70+ minutes. It costs 5 euros per person. Calculate the time of arrival very well and beware it can only take a certain amount of people, so if you do not fight to death with your trip mates, you might miss one and end up wait another 70+ min. There is no way to know the timings, no way to know how long you will wait. No info and just one shuttle bus is very problematic (and it was mid September, imagine in August). The service is absolutely not up to the job.
There is an info office but the ladies have no idea when the bus would be coming, they just say a random number.
When the bus arrives it is completely packed with absolute no regard to safety of the passengers.
This is a ridiculous service.

As of this summer rental cars are banned from driving up to lagoa do Fogo and have to get a Shuttlebus. Despite having done a lot of research prior to going I hadn't come across any sign of this so was frustrating as we planned to go to the lake for a walk before going to Caldeira Velha as we'd booked for that. As a result we spent a good part of the day hanging around at the bus stop and outside the springs. Having said that we still had a good walk down to the lake and the view was well worth it, just we would have got there earlier had we known or not planned to do both on the same day.

Steep hike with “wow” views. The trail wasn’t overly crowded, many opportunities to capture breathtaking views. After descending more than 1/2 way down the mountain, there’s a short but sturdy ladder. Most hikers can make it to the lake in an hour, but more time is needed to explore down by the shoreline. Hiking shoes recommended for some rocky and muddy areas. Hot springs are just a drive down the road from here. Unfortunately we didn’t make it there before closing time.

I'm not sure a prettier place exists. We didn't have time to do the hike around the lake, but we stopped at the viewpoint that requires a steep walk up a small road. It's 100% worth the short walk t see that view. We were really lucky that we arrived when we did, as the clouds very quickly shrouded the lake. So be sure to go when the skies are relatively clear.
