My second Wow spot on the island.
Jan 2020
Lagoa do Fogo became my second Wow spot on the island after Sete Cidades. Like all the beauties of San Miguel, the lake is of volcanic origin. Occupying the Central Caldera of the Agua de Pau massif, the lake was formed about 5,000 years ago as a result of erosion and the subsequent collapse of the volcano's walls. By the way, the youngest on the island (15,000 years old) The lake is located at an altitude of 575 meters, and the edge of the crater at the highest point at an altitude of 949 meters this creates a surreal view of the lake and the sea at the same time. The bowl of the lake is concave, as the inner slopes of the crater reach almost 50 degrees. The best views are obtained from the mountain on which the weather station is located, which can be reached by car. The lake in the form of an irregular ellipse measuring 3 by 2.5 kilometers from this point is magnificent. Going down there will be two more observation decks, from one of which you can go down to the beach, which is recognized as one of the 7 best beaches in Portugal. Interestingly, this beach is the only one in the top seven almost not used for swimming. By the way, the water of the lake is suitable for drinking and is used for water supply of settlements on the southern slopes of the Caldera. Tourists can stay not only for swimming, but also to study the endemic species that grow along the perimeter of the lake and Caldera: Azores juniper, Azores Laurel, Azores Heather. However, there are a few "Buts". First. All this beauty is available in case of absence or slight fog. Unfortunately, the climate of the Azores disposes to the opposite. 300 days a year there is fog of varying degrees of transparency... second. It is better to go here in summer, because in winter it is bitterly cold. Still, the level is almost 1000 meters, high humidity, plus wind from the sea. The thermometer reading and the feeling of temperature can be very different. The third "but". Even if everything comes together as we have, it is impossible to get here and go back by public transport. This business is generally bad in the Azores, but it's terrible here. The most inexpensive way (not counting a rented car) to get to Lagoa from Ponta Delgado by bus, and from there by taxi. The taxi driver will wait for You on the miradors, but, of course, will not wait for You from the beach. If you suddenly want to swim on the beach of the seven best wild beaches in Portugal...

Awesome view but a pity that you cannot go around the lake
Sep 2020
This was our first hike on the Acores.
We parked on the parking on the northwest part of the lake (see photo of the hike).

The views on the lake are awesome and even if the weather was not the best we really enjoyed the hike.

Our only disappointment is that you cannot make a round around the lake and you have to come back by the same path.

But that remains a super hike to make !!

Beautiful lake, great hike
Feb 2020
Lagoa do Fogo is a beautiful volcanic lake near the centre of São Miguel. You could simply drive up to the viewpoint to see the lake, but if you have time I'd recommend doing the hike instead. Use these coordinates 37°43’40.0″N 25°28’17.5″W to find the parking spot, and then follow the signposted trail, which will take you through farmland, forests, mountain valleys, and finally to the lake itself. One of the nicest hikes I've ever done, taking about 2 hours each way. You'll want to pick a clear day if possible, to get the best views across the lake (weather can change pretty quickly in the Azores, so even if it's cloudy when you get to the lake you could wait for 30 minutes and it could clear up).

Great sights
Feb 2020 • Couples
The lake has great views and can be seen from several places around the lake; we chose the north side. It was shorter and close to some of the other sights.

Lagoa do Fogo (crater lake Fogo)
Dec 2019
I visited Azores for the first time just after Christmas of 2019. My cousin and I arrived Dec. 29. Weather was ok, a comfortable 15 C, a mix of sun showers and cloud. We opted to stay near Furnas (pronounced “Fur-nish” with accent on first syllable). We decided our daily itinerary based on the weather. Our trip to Lagoa do Fogo ended up happening Dec. 30th. We read other reviews and decided that because the sky had gotten pretty cloudy, we wouldn’t do any of the hikes as the trails were likely very muddy and slippery. (I have a bum knee.) Instead, we drove up to the summit and parked in the small parking lot at the base of the antennas. Then we walked up the steep dirt road used by service vehicles to get the panoramic view. Well worth it, even on a cloudy day. Tip: check the internet site with all the webcams set up at key towns and scenic points all across the island (visitazores.com)

Stunning views over the lagoon and to the north shore. Walking trails. Parking at viewpoints. Clear weather essential. Steep, windy access roads

Great view
Sep 2019
This is a great place to drive to and walk to view. There are two nearby parking lots. It's beautiful to watch as the colors change while the sunlight varies.
