Unfortunately our expectations were not met. After visiting many caves whilst travelling, there was a sense that not much thought has been put into raising the level of experience. The guide struggled to create any enjoyment, not by his own fault, but the visit was just drawn out and boring with limited exploring.

The enviroment was nice, and the cave where a sight to see. unfortunatly we had a bad experience with our guide (marcello) Nobody of the group could understand his english, when we didnt laugh at his jokes (we couldnt understand him) he got mad, and continued to be passive aggresive towars the group. When somebody pointed it out that he talked a little much and nobody could here him, he even got more agressive. He cut the tour short because nobody was paying attention anymore.

We where promised 1u,30min in
The cave, but because of our passive agressive guide we only spend a small hour inside...

Nice cave, but bad experience with the guide.

We tried to pay attention to what he said but it the end he was very unprofessional.

Very good tour. The guide gives good explanation on how the lava tubes are formed. You go down a long staircase to get into the caves. The walk down is lovely, where you can see the darkness ahead and the plant life above.

At one point in the tour, the guide has everyone turn off their flashlight and you get to experience total darkness.

Highly recommend the tour.

Be sure to book a tour as I saw walk-ins turned away. The tour starts with a safety video. You don hardhats and lights so you can see where you are going as you descend into the lava tube. It's a unique place and I highly recommend the tour.

We loved everything about this place.
The architecture is amazingly beautiful and discreet. The way you go into the grutas is so respectful and incredible. The guide was so kind, so helpful, he knew so much about the gruta and the history of Pico. It was unforgettable!

Very interesting experience to better understand how a lava flow creates a lava tunnel and this is a huge one! Thanks to our tour guide Marcelo we managed to get complex geology concepts in a simple and funny way. He has been very professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Unfortunately we got a male guide which doesn't speak English well enough to lead a tour. It was impossible to understand what he was saying. Too bad because I really looked forward to it.

The lady who led the tour before ours speaks fluent English. Make sure that you get her.

Two stars because the caves are impressive

Amazing location, the guided tour is very educational, went at the appropriate pace for our group, and was just overall very cool. Europe's largest lava tube, with trekking through the cave floor in helmets with flashlights (no lighting run to the tunnel) is a really fun experience. (I believe tours run once an hour)

Situaded in Pico island, lies the biggest lava tunel from Portugal. With over 5km long, this natural lava tunel takes us to the inside of a volcano, where the reality changes, and the colors, odors, and perception of space is something special.
Situated close to the vilage of Madalena, its easy to arrive by car or taxi.
The access is done throug the visitors center, were the combination of lava stone and new materials was used to create a very interesting building, perfectly fitted in the landscape.
The you will recive a brieffing before embarking on a true adventure. The cave is completly natural, so its advise you take walking shoes, following a guide, they take you with helmets and front lights through the tunel, showing and explaining all the diferent formations, form stalagtites and stalagmites, diferent lava forms and colors, were simple life forms live, like shinny bacterias and fungus.
Its a safe adventure and definitly worth it....

We visited on Sunday 8th May after driving from the far side of the island. Information from the Internet stated it would be open at 2pm. It was not. We thought that perhaps this was because it was Sunday and therefore visited again on 9th. Once again it was closed. We hung around for half an hour in case staff were late opening, no one arrived other than tourists just like us who were to be disappointed.
There are no notices regarding opening times at the visitor centre.
There is a phone number for contact on the tourist board by the entrance to the car park which we rang but no-one answers.
Several other tourists were sadly very disappointed on both days too.
They should put information on the centre door and they need to update the information on the Internet. We wasted two afternoons which easily could have been avoided.
