Renato was an amazing guide! My friends and I were worried about the hike at first but Renato answered all of our questions and equipped us with everything we needed for the hike. He went above and beyond to make sure we had fun and felt comfortable. I honestly could not recommend him enough, he is the perfect guide! Thank you again for the amazing experience 😊

Review for: solo traveler (non-Portuguese), "night climb" to see the sunrise at the top of Pico mountain. Why: I was originally planning to climb the Pico during the day on my own. However I talked to Renato before and he suggested making the night climb (I never did anything similar and I am a semi-experienced climber/hiker, having lived close to the Alps for some years). Having decided to do it during the night, I decided also to use the services of Renato's company (safety reasons). How: I was picked up from the shop by Renato at 2:30am and we arrived and met the rest of the group (10ppl in total) at Casa de Montanha. There we all were handed equipment (trekking poles, headlamps, GPS transmitter) and headed off around 3am. We arrived at the peak around 6am, while going up quite slow (breaks every ~20mins) and waited 1:45hrs for the sunrise. It was cold (<5degC) and Renato have prepared coffee and tee for everyone. That was really helpful :) We left downwards around 8:45am and arrived back at the parking just after 12pm. Experience: The night climb was awesome. Really. Totally focused on the trail - btw. I would have never managed to do it on my own. The trail is not clear to recognize, you shall follow between the poles that are placed every ~200meters. So at night - you simply can't see the next one. I imagine it is the same in any foggy or cloudy conditions even during the day. The view from the top is absolutely brilliant. And the path down the mountain, during the early morning, gives you the opportunity to see the route and surroundings. Comments: Renato is highly experienced guide on the Pico mountain (apparently more than 2.5k climbs) and I felt safe all the time. I was informed about the needed preparation (jacket, long trousers, etc to 'survive' the temperature at the top of Pico) , Reanto also shared some facts and information about the Pico, starts, etc. Probably there could be more of that (informations, etc), but for me it was OK. For me the size of the group was a bit too big and thus the speed a bit too slow :) - that is my only complaint. Otherwise I can fully recommend the experience.

I normally don't write this type of review but I felt compelled to do it after the exchange with Renato which I felt wasn't very constructive. I was in a group of 10 and of those 10 only I didn't speak Portuguese which for me if I had known I probably wouldn't have booked the trip (honestly). In the whole 8 hours the guide didn't explain anything about the mountain nor did he speak to me or engage in conversation (the only thing he said to me was "we are 1000m, 2000m high" when we reached certain points and for me it wasn't good enough. I did the walk with gritted teeth until near the end and in front of the group.. I said very bluntly "listen in 8 hours you haven't attempted to speak or explain anything to me" which I feel I am 100% justified in but on being told by Renato it wasn't the right place to air how i felt, I agree.. I don't regret anything I said but maybe the place and nature wasn't correct.. so I am sorry for this Douard. Now after the walk I wanted to clear the air with Renato and he just didnt listen to any point I made only interrupted. I told him about what happen during the walk and he just didn't make me feel valued constantly interrupting simply saying "oh you want someone to stand there and tell you everything about the island and Douard doesn't need to just talk the whole time explaining and talking.. and "feel the mountain is not about talking and explaining" which is absolute rubbish because all he did was chat (solely in Portuguese to three other people. asking about their lives and talking about the mountain only to them..) and I did 'feel the mountain'.. ... All you did was interupt me and not value what I had to say... You weren't on the walk with us.. so how you know what happened is a mystery. The last thing you said was "he took you up and down the mountain what more do you want..." As if that's a justification for a terrible tour (in my opinion).. Now the experience and the walk was amazing.. believe me it was so beautiful to be at the top and above the clouds. Next time I personally wouldn't take a guide but I have to say that he probably was a good guide (he was attentive and showed us the right way and for the portuguése people he engaged in conversation) but for me it wasn't so good.
